Box art of Namco Bandai's Time Crisis 4 for the PS3 - Image 1One of the best things Namco Bandai is known for is its many popular titles ported from the arcade platform. The latest of these games was the release of Time Crisis 4 for the PS3 last November 20. In a Gamasutra interview with game producer Teruaki Minami, the game and the return of the gun-based gaming genre was discussed.

Despite Time Crisis 4 being a close port of the arcade version, Namco Bandai has always tried to insert new features for the console version of this popular shooter. The most notable addition is the new FPS mode that appeals to a lot of gamers in the United States and Europe.

He also explains the new design of the Guncon 3 that will come with the game:

For the Guncon 1 and 2, those controllers are capturing the flashes from the standard definition TV, however, that method is not compatible with the latest high definition plasma and LCD monitors. So that is one of the reasons that we had to create a new Guncon. And, do work with all different kinds of monitors, we decided to introduce new LED markers - basically for Guncon 3 there is a little camera here which is catching the position of the LED markers.

He also mentions that the new model's somewhat complicated design was created to make room for more titles to be released despite the fact that Time Crisis 4 didn't need a lot of buttons to simulate the arcade version's gameplay.

Minami also explained why they preferred porting the game onto the Sony PS3. Aside from the previous Time Crisis games having counterparts on the PS2, the LED markers on Guncon 3 were much more accurate compared to the Wiimote's. There was also the fact that the gun also had SIXAXIS capabilities similar to the standard PS3 controller.

Seeing that there's been a lot of new FPS games being released lately, Minami also asked other publishers such as Sega, Capcom and Konami to try and develop the Guncon 3 for their future games. This will give the PS3 the chance to try their hand in developing a new gaming control system similar to what Nintendo did with the Wiimote.

This sounds complicated and cool at the same time

Its gd to kno ppl are always trying to be creative, but i cant see all those extra features bein used in games. 6axis is fine if only 1 axis is applied imo since many find it difficult

WTF!?!?!?!?!

Guncon 3 is crap. We're nearing 2008 and they dare to release a WIRED accessory? I'm waiting for the wireless alternative. In addition to that, something from overseas that isn't eye crunching orange!

Missing the reload pedal

It's not that bad. It's honestly more accurate that the Wii-mote. I have both Ghost Squad + Wii-Zapper and Time Crisis 4 + GunCon 3. It's just I wish the reload pedal was there. Although there are still alternatives to this(dance mats, racing controller's pedals, or even step on the controller), but having it's own pedal will make it even better. As far as the orange color goes, it does not bother me. I already asked my brother to paint the gun with black since he's an action-figure modeling hobbyist. So after winter, I'll have the same color of GunCon 3 as the ones Japanese has.

Satisfied Customer

I purchased TC4 and the Guncon 3 is everything they claimed it would be. The color I understand is needed. Wired contoller - no wireless lag. The lack of the pedal doesn't bother me that much as I don't feel that yet another usb port needed to be taken up and I don't feel it's slowing me down at all. I love the design of the guncon 3. Yes, I would have liked it if you could switch the second handle to the right side but when I get tired of shooting right handed I switch hands and grab it awkwardly and it doesn't feel right at first but I find it works well. Honestly, I can't wait for some other developers to make some guncon 3 games. In the mean time though, TimeCrisis 4 is excellent and I am nowhere near feeling it's getting old. Hell, I plug in the NES every year or so to have a shot at some ducks - and this is so much cooler.

Wireless or not, who cares?

It seems people ***** more than play games these days. What's happening to the world man? TC4 is a great arcade game and the port was spot on. I can't wait for more. Hey Sega, a new House of the Dead?

WTF!?!?!?!?!

Obviously people do. I've read a ton of posts in various forums of people that will wait for a wireless solution. There is no question that the game rocks. Nothing wrong with waiting for better hardware.
