Midway Considers Mortal Kombat Sale - Image 1

"I'm more Square Enix material anyway."

Just how bad does Midway Games have it right now? Well aside from filing for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, they're considering selling off the franchise they're arguably most well-known for: Mortal Kombat.

This is one of their proposals included in an incentive plan they submitted for court permission. The plan covers 29 employees and will award a total of US$ 3,755,000. But if they're bankrupt, where will they get the money, you ask. Apparently, a distribution deal they made with Ubisoft for Wheelman (PS3, 360) will earn them around US$ 6 million.

It's a very brave thing for them to decide to sell off Mortal Kombat. They'll be losing one of their popular franchises (not applicable to MK vs. DC?), but at least they'll be getting the funds they need to keep going.

Near fatality for Midway:

Well, what else could they do? Just let the franchise die along with the company? At least the series will keep going.

» that would never happen...

the franchise would be sold to cover outstanding debts in the event the publisher folds entirely.

» Please!

Let Capcom buy it, they did good with streetfighter, and i hope they can fix mortal kombat back to 2d...my gosh, when mortal kombat went tekken, everything went down hill that they had to start including side mini games and beat em up side story campains...

They did good with street fighter before mk even existed

mk hasn't been good since the second one anyway and when it was good it was only ever because of its gimic (the death moves) the actual fighting part was always like a chore you had to do to get to the fatalities.

That's your opinion. I liked a lot of the Mortal Kombat games, Shaolin Monks, Deception, Deadly Alliance, and even MK vs DC. Personally I wouldn't mind Capcom acquiring it, I think they'd do it justice. I hope EA doesn't get it.. Mortal Kombat 2010, Mortal Kombat 2011...

» Could be interesting

Yeah, I haven't been too crazy about the latest MK's either. Hopefully a GOOD game company will pick this up. I think Namco-Bandai would be another good pick for picking this up.

If they went back to using those paid actors, it would be better. After MK3 it was all horrible. I hate those cartoony characters.

I agree with DarkGeekRocker - the series died when they went 3D - 2D MK are the best and MK should've been kept in 2D. They should've expanded the 2D graphics by creating a more elaborated 2D arenas, Fatalities, Animalities, FriendShips- I meant Liu Ken Dragon animality looked very good back in the days - why not enhanced the look of the characters? Also create more characters while keeping the same 2D concept? Look at SF and learn.

lol, and don't forget "MK: Mysterious Voice" where you watch other people fight and you get to say things like "Finish Him" and "Fatality" into a micropohone ("NFL Head Coach 09" joke)

» liu ken? wtf is liu ken?

its liu kang and Mk1,2,3 and ultimate are very good

4 is a crap

5 returned to the righteous path but still needed somethign to be really good.

6 deception was a very good and decent fighter with good gameplay and very balanced, just so all the guays making "smart comments" know

7- armaggedon was a totall crap but Mortal VS DC was very good

» If they're selling off their franchises...

Do they mind selling Shadow Hearts to Level-5?

by EugeneE - 2009-03-03 13:55
» what could they do

Midway is severe debt so selling Mortal Kombat (their most popular franchise) is something they probably have to do to stay in business.

» meh

Never could stand Mortal Kombat even back in it's 2D days with it's awful digitized graphics that made all the fighters look like cardboard cut outs. MKII was the best one but that ain't saying much.

by SolidXnake - 2009-03-04 02:09
» hey hey

show some respect man! You talking about MK - that's a classic! LOL - compare to now - yes they are cardboard cut outs but back in the days it was pretty darn amazing graphics- And blood man blood!
