Mortal Kombat publisher Midway misses deadline, files for bankruptcy

That's how you hit the fan.

I doubt the government will intervene with this one. Midway Games, the publisher of the Mortal Kombat series, has run out of time to pay back its US$ 150 million debt to its bond owners. As a last ditch effort to reorganize, the company has filed for a Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

You know, I still remember the time when I thought getting to Chapter 11 meant just moving your bookmark. In case the economy hasn't educated you on the term yet, filing a Chapter 11 means a business is asking for government protection against its debtors as it tries to get its act together.

Though Midway was able to buy time for itself yet again, if it can't pay back its 9-digit debt by February 19, it will owe Redstone's National Amusements Inc. an additional US$ 90 million, totaling its debt to US$ 240 million.

Am I the only person who actually enjoyed MK vs DC? It truly felt like a Mortal Kombat game, the controls.. And I didn't really notice the graphic gore missing! Two player was great fun. Anyway.. Midway, I love you. Please don't leave us!

Although what probably will happen if Midway closes is that the majority of the devs will attempt to create their own studio under another name, or perhaps just join an already-existing one and take the Mortal Kombat name with them.. Maybe? I don't know much about bankruptcy or trademarks..

Ed Boon and the gang will take it and run OR some other company will step in and buy the talent and rights to the series Midway holds and go from there.

I think it was horribly unrealistic that Midway thought it'd make that kind of money in such as short time, especially without some massive hitting games. Sure there was MK vs DC but during the Christmas season where there was already a TON of awesome stuff to choose from.

MK vs DC wasn't exactly an original idea, we've had Marvel Vs Capcom kicking around since the mid to late 90s. In my opinion the Marvel characters have always been more interesting then DC. If they were really smart they would have forgot about the MK vs DC thing and gone DC vs Marvel, that could be fun.

Mind you nobody does fighting games better then Capcom so maybe Midway should have let their fighting game genre rest in peace. I really enjoyed stranglehold, why didn't they redo some of their games from the 80s.

I would let Mortal Kombat die lol! Midway needs to beef up Mortal Kombat majorly if it wants to be more than the red-headed step child of fighting games. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I got anything against MK, it's just the truth. MK vs DC didn't sell so great because it's not a good fighting game. For Midway's sake, I hope they learn something about fighting games today and overhaul MK by adding some depth to it. Fatalities are okay and all, but it's the fighting up to that point that's shallow and clunky. So unless they do something about MK and make it decent, I don't see enough people buying into MK to save it. Why would they? One look at this generation's fighting games makes MK seem pale in comparison. Tekken 6 BR, Virtua Fight 5 r, Soul Calibur 4, Street Fighter 4, BlazBlue, even King of Fighters XII looks like SNK might finally make a pretty good KOF since 98'.

MK vs. DC DID sell pretty damn well. Last time I checked, they shipped over 1 million copies already. People are still buying it.

SO I did a little research my bad! But it stills sucks, and I haven't even given a thought to buy it. So over 1 million people have really bad taste, I can't speak for them. Was it even released in Japan? No, because I doubt they're as dumb to buy it. -_-. Why you guys can't just admit the game sucks? The words "balance" and "depth" can't even be associated with a single MK game.

Can we stick to the subject? I mean, all I'm sayin is the game is terrible. You mind tellin me how it's not? Yeah I call it bad taste. What else you what me to say? Good marketing for a crappy game? I don't know what helped this game sell even 2 copies. It's not like I absolutely hate the Mortal Kombat franchise, I'd just like to see it become a better fighting game. It has potential, but apparently the creators would rather cookie cut this series to death. Oh that's right it has a T rating. Maybe because that's the only people who are gonna purchase it? And let's not forget using DC characters, Batman is in right now, of course people bought it. Anyway, back to the subject at hand. If anybody seriously likes Mortal Kombat they'd want to see it evolve into a better game. Not to mention Midway slacked on the single player experience from what I heard. And navani I happen to think my ***** doesn't stink as well. Got somethin to say about that, and stray from the subject?

Figure it would happen sooner or later. And as much as i would like Ed Boon and the gang buy the MK license, i dont think he would. I heard an interview of Ed Boon on one of the X-box podcast around late 08 early 09 (can't find the link off the top of my head sadly. :( ) Anyway, one of the guys that were interviewing him actully asked "If Midway goes under, would he buy the license ?". He stated if midway would give it to him as a going away gift yea, but other than that he cant afford it. Don't expect it to happen anytime soon.
