Mortal Kombat 8, starting from scratch. Blame Epic/Gears

Next thing you know, this turns into a COG. - Image 1Sorry if this is on the late-ish side, but perhaps it was because people have been focusing on Mortal Kombat: Armageddon, this might have slipped under the radar... until CVG brought it up recently. And we're still wondering WHY this slipped under the radar until now.

Don't over-react: starting from scratch isn't necessarily a bad thing. "Everything is getting trashed. We're reinventing everything from the ground up. We really think that's needed," Ed Boon tells GameInformer back during MGD '07, about the Midway Games MK team's concept for the next-gen Mortal Kombat 8. "We're not going to have three fighting styles, we're not going to have the same punches and kicks and the same kind of control scheme."

Never mind what it doesn't have: guess what it will have, according to CVG: Epic Games' Unreal Engine 3. Yes, Ed did a Squeenix. And there's one game to blame - er, to credit for MK8's new look. "Our goal, graphically, with this game is to be as gritty... To me, when I saw Gears of War, I was like, 'Holy s***! That's the look that we've been talking about... Visually, that's what we want to do.'"

If that chainsaw ever makes a cameo as a Fatality... Well, you now know who or what to turn to when the blood starts to fly in MK8. Boon gives a "Novemberish time of 2008" estimate for the next-gen Kombat to kick in. (As there are no known specifics yet about which console/s it will appear in, we've gone and dropped it in all three next-gen consoles, to be sure. Please put all debates on hold until we get firmer reports about 8's destination.)

Mark Rein must be tickled pink into a Babality.

I am one of the biggest MK junkies, and Armageddon was the real end of MK...aka, it ruined the franchise...so if Boon thinks hes slick enough to play off something completely from scratch, I would be VERY scheptical of what he has up his sleeve. I want to see the next gen stuff to believe it. If he does up this next one I will be surprised.

Back to 2-D? The 3-D MKs just aren't that fun.

I too am an avid MK junkie, and I recently bought MK:A because I thought that would be the best of the best. Ive been waiting forever for an MK game with all the characters, but somehow it still fell short. My main turn off was the fatalities in that game, but the character models weren't that great either. On the other hand I LOVED Shaolin Monks, its definately one of the best in the series. It had that dark demonic feel to it that a lot of the 3d fighers are lacking. They need to stop making the MK games so cartoony and actually bring it into the flesh. Thats why people loved MK1 and MK2, after MK3 it slowly started to decline (with the exception of MKSM)

while i still believe MK Trilogy will never be topped...

i think what boon is saying would be a good thing for the franchise.

all the 3d MK games have all looked kinda cartoonish to me.

I've been an MK Addict since the very beginning of the franchise, and while I love the games and the characters, something about 'starting from scratch' and using the UT3 engine makes me very uneasy.

I WANT to see something new, but I don't want to see a halfassed game like Armageddon (seriously, the Kreate-A-Fatality is a piece of crap they threw in so they wouldn't have to code as much, and don't get me started on Motoro). Something about the UT3 engine screams 'SHORTCUT!!' to me (bad thing).

Oh, and I've seen this 'new direction' with Puzzle Kombat, and the Go-Kart minigames... Someone needs to B*+ch slap Boon until he remembers what it was that made Mortal Kombat an immortal game.

I've actually never been a fan of MK-- well, a huge fan to say the least. I'm interested on how this will come out.

Wow. I can't believe it took this long for Boon to say, "You know what? MK's gameplay is pretty damn stale."

I was sick of the franchise by the third game. The second movie didn't help, either.
