A new Nintendo Wii coming to the U.S.? - Image 1Someone at the official Nintendo forums called the Nintendo and asked if there was a Wii with DVD playback capability ever coming to the U.S. Now while customer service representatives aren't usually considered sources for "official" word for anyone, this reply came from an official memo, strewn across the CSR database that said:
  • A new Wii is definitely coming to the U.S.
  • DVD playback will be supported and is claimed to be the only new feature as of now
  • Firmware (or "a software upgrade embedded in the hardware") update for DVD compatibility
  • No upgrading of old Wiis
  • The new Wii will be coming by the second half of 2007 (or "latter part of 2007")
Are the details credible? Well, to put it honestly, we were about to dismiss it as another Wii "hype fest," as one tried to call the same number and got absolutely no details as reported by the first caller. But then another forum member dared to call Nintendo, and here is his awestruck reply:

Wow, I was expecting them to tell me no... They told me it's true and that it is coming out in the latter part of 2007. The only upgrade is DVD compatibility though... The rep also mentioned something that they're doing with the WiFi connection. Nintendo is partnering up with GameSpy for something. He couldn't clarify it any more than that. I hope this itches your brain. It certainly has got me wondering.

Yes, it does spark even more wonder. Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto did say they were doing something about adding new features for hardcore play, and it seems that the Wii is actually going online after all. Partnering with a game matching service as robust as GameSpy sparks its own share of speculation: what is Nintendo up to?

Whatever it is, it's definitely something to watch out for. Kudos to SKATERYAN and HAMATRIXDUDE for sharing this info. You can always verify for yourself and check out the number provided by HAMATRIXDUDE at the Via link below.

Total bull*****

Nintendo, as stupid as they are, would not ***** on their customers like this. They would have to offer some sort of "old Wii" trade-in. Sure, they did this sort of thing with the DS/DS Lite, but there was an actual upgrade there, not just a software add-on that they forced you to buy new hardware to use.

this is jsut like m$

why is nintendo copying m$ with briging otu a new upgraded console already! they are just as money grabing as m$ if they actually do this, ripping off there older loyale customers who bought the wii before, i think it's pathetic...

.....

To me it does not matter about having the DVD player on my Wii as I already have 5 or so DVD players around the house... Although it is nice to have it All In One.
by - 2007-04-07 08:25:36
YES!!

I am smarter! I didn't get the old wii so this will definitely for me to get because of dvd playback and new wii. yay!
by - 2007-04-07 08:35:43

by - 2007-04-07 12:15:11

they are doing this to change everything in the coding to stop modchips.
by - 2007-04-07 12:54:23
You got one too?

I thought I was the only one to get a DVD player... I don't think I've ever met someone else with one...
by - 2007-04-07 13:12:13
Well....

Ok, this is total bull $H!T, i spend 400 dollars (excessories and all) for a Wii, and Nintendo cant throw me a DVD upgrade? This....man, Nintendo is going to hear from me.

Can people get any dumber?

You sir, are a moron. QJ should have a strict policy against stupid little children, which seems like every comment on this post is made by.

....wow.

Good god QJ, you're so stupid. The GameSpy thing was announced weeks ago, you *****ing morons.

no big deal..

How many people don't have dvd players? It is JUST dvd, calm down... what's the point of whining, it's not like the people who chose not to just give an update are going to read these blogs and feel sorry. Besides, nintendo is already doing something big for the Wii-adding the usb compatibility. That can mean you can plug in an attachment. I really doubt that Nintendo is not going to release an update and a thing like the original xbox's remote thingy for licensing. Then again, there is a difference b/w a game dvd and dvd video...

fasinating

my dvd player has HDMI and my wii dosent so i guess ill stick with my DVD player and just play game on the wii
by - 2007-04-08 08:11:35
Who gives a **ck

I have 3 dvd players already, i don't need another one. So i'm content with my wii
by - 2007-04-08 08:36:07
.

Pay no attention to this, no customer service rep on the planet working for any company out there has access to info like this, if they did apparently call this number and they did say that, it's just speculation by some guy who gets paid 8 bucks an hour to read repairing steps out of a book to kids who broke their systems all day. True he may have heard about a DVD release somewhere around the office, probably from his buddy in the next cubicle whos been reading the bull***** posts about it on QJ while on his break.

They're having a slow news day

-DVD playback will be supported and is claimed to be the only new feature as of now ^Bull*****, Nintendo would have no reason -Firmware (or "a software upgrade embedded in the hardware") update for DVD compatibility ^AKA online download, the same way you n00bs update your iPods -No upgrading of old Wiis ^Bull*****, just some ***** trying to start trouble This article is the last straw, im removing QJ from my favorites. sorry guys.. im sick of reading rumors and lies.
by - 2007-04-22 13:33:42
Oh noes! He said n00bs!

You're an idiot. By all means, remove it from your favorites, maybe if you don't come back we won't have to hear your angry bull****. This announcement sounds like every other EARLY announcement I've ever heard from game companies. Give it a few months, and the tune will change. Then you can go on blaming QJ because it's easier for you. Especially since it's obvious you can only handle easy things, like Duplo blocks. Ever notice how the people who throw around "n00b" as an insult are usually the clueless ones?

Barely an upgrade

Barely an upgrade. It was really more of an update. They were all cosmetic updates, smaller form factor, brighter screen. It didn't have any added functionality. This is a little different, but seeing as the drive inside a Wii is already a DVD drive, I don't see why a firmware update, maybe a software download for player software, wouldn't allow the unit to playback movie DVDs.
