Edmonton SunThe Edmonton Sun had an interview with Miyamoto at E3. One of the questions they asked was about the Dual Shock 3. More specifically, it was about the Dual Shock 3's motion sensing capability. What did Miyamoto have to say?

"It's kind of what always seems to happen. But the fact that they looked at what we were doing and decided it was a good path is kind of flattering, it kind of reinforces in our minds that we're doing the right thing. What they've done is just take your standard controller and add in this motion-sensing device that's similar to what we did back on the Game Boy Color many years ago. Maybe if they were to completely copy and go with a remote and a nunchuk and two motion sensors, I might be a little more concerned. But I don't think they're anywhere close to that."

Like Satoru Iwata, he is also taking it with an "Imitation is the greatest form of flattery" type of mindset. Obviously, unlike the WiiMote, the Dual Shock 3 is no more appealing to non-gamers than the Dual Shock 2. That's also something he brought up with names. He thinks Wii is more appealing to non-gamers because it doesn't sound like a game system. It's not a "PlayStation" or a "GameCube." He also had something interesting to say about learning curves. He thinks that the WiiMote will have a deeper learning curve for regular gamers than non-gamers because we have to re-learn our controls. When you think about it, he's right! However, I'm ready for the challenge!

"Imitation is the greatest form of flattery" - Miyamoto knows how the business works and he would never say that, the fact is the industry copies one another back to back, thats how all great developments are made, someone comes up with a basic idea and people expand on it. These things date back from video games to even the creation of the atom bomb (check it out its interesting). Playstation did copied nintendo but not in the sense that they stole their idea but took theirs and adapted it in their own style, just like miyamoto said, if PS would have stolen the nunchuck and the microphone and everything then it they ould have been guilty, otherwise theyre just doing business.

# look at the current gen systemscomedy 2006-05-21 21:39
just look at the control pads for the current gen of systems... they're all basically the same, gc may have it's bits in a very slightly different order but it's basically the same.

as #1 said, they take something good and make it better or expand on it... why not take advantage of something promising? also, if motion sensing is the next step in gaming trends then sony would have been fools to forego it when they had the chance to add it to ps3.

Nintendo is worse than Microsoft and Sony...

When will get over the fact that they were not the first ones with the motion-sensing capable controller?

Microsoft AND Sony had used the technology BEFORE nintendo even thought about it...

Morons. Nintendo is jealous of the 360 and PS3... and so they should be.

Is the PS3 controller really called DualShock 3 ?

That would be kinda strange because there is no "shock" anymore...

"When will [they] get over the fact that they were not the first ones with the motion-sensing capable controller?"

They already have. Nintendo hasn't said "We're the first with a motion-sensing controller." They ARE, however, the first company to have the motion-sensing controller as a STANDARD, and in effect introduce it to mainstream gaming. There's a reason why the old motion-sensor controllers aren't as well known as Nintendo's...

The same goes for rumble and analog sticks. Sure, the technology existed before, but Nintendo applied it to mainstream gaming first.

Nintendo is far from mainstream...more like a drop in the ocean when it comes to home consoles...

These Days Sony and Microsoft set the trends...

And yes.. Nintendo implied that Sony Copied 'their' idea...

I used to like Nintendo back in the pre-gamecube days...they suck something bad now...

I dont understand why some people keeps saying Wii is more appealing to non-gamers? frankly all this Wii being more like a non-gaming machine seems a lot of crap for me. Among all the new system the most that feels (and is marketed as a cheap one) like a gaming machine is just the Wii. At least Sony and M$ are trying to put some more value (digital multimedia) into our houses. What Nintendo is doing? IMO trying to sell a subpar system that sooner than later will show its age. A console for kids no more, yeah gameplay is all but I want to see more gameplay than jumping-with-mario-bros, something like Assassins Creed with crowd interaction and many characters in screen, I dont think that will be possible in Wii.

# DifferenceGuest 2006-05-22 03:17
There is a difference in the TILT-sensitive controllers back in the day and the MOTION-sensitive Wiimote of today. The sidewinder or that Pelican thing for PS is just Tilt-sensitive. It's more or less the same thing as the DS3. Wiimote's technology is broader and it's standard as people say, that's why it's different.

And about copying. Well, that happens and what I've noticed is that the first person to invent something is praised and the first to copy it is ridiculed, yet the third on out is seen as just doing what's 'standard' or 'competition'.

Like, if I invented a poptart filling machine people might love it. But then Bob comes out with one a few months later, he'll be seen as someone who copied me, but then if Jeff comes out after Bob with his version then it's all just 'friendly competition' and it becomes standard and accepted that different brands use the same idea.

I think it's going to take till Microsoft comes out with their tilt/motion-sensitive controller for everyone to accept it as standard. Poor Sony will just be seen as imitators till then.

Then, when the Nintendo Us, Playstation 4 and Xbox 720 comes out with all the controllers like that, no one will care.

I read that you can snap the wiimote into the back of the classic style controller. When you think about it the classic will have all of the abilities of the wiimote and a normal controller...

When you think about it this is the last generating where graphics will really be matter. When you look at PS3 and 360 games you can easily see that by the end of this generation graphics will have done all they can do for game play. Sony and Nintendo are doing the right things by changing the way we play games. That is what the next generation will be about.

When you think about it having your movements translated into a game it is one step closer to virtual reality! If the DS can be so small and cheap some one can make a visor that can easily display the same kind of graphics it can and give it a motion sensor. Then games will be reborn and as the tech gets cheaper people will focus on graphics again! If the DS can be that faster growing game system in the world the the right mixture of graphics and innovative game play can do anything!

...people like you really annoy me. enjoy your Wii. come this fall, i'll be enjoying my PS3, 360 *and* Wii. leave your fanboy loyalties at home and enjoy *gaming*. i have a preference for Sony, as the past to Playstation systems have had the most games i wanted to play, but that doesn't mean i'm going to shut out the other two systems. i love video games, regardless of what system the games may be on.

as far as developers matter, they can care less who made a profit, because sales is all that matter to 3rd partys care about.

Also

Shipped=Sold(to retailers, but the company took in money from the buying retailer)

# why is miya-wiisuks-amoto ranting here?Guest 2006-05-22 13:00
please take the wii propaganda off of the ps3 page. i dont care what miya"wiisucks"amoto has to say about his controller. I just wanted to read about the ps3.

This whole controller agrument is apples to oranges. 2 totally diffrent ways of going about it. So sony hasnt mastered it yet, it would still be solid with out it. If thats all the wii has to offer, then thats kinda lame. Seems like they perfected a nice gimmick to me. It'll be fun for a week. maybe 2 if you're on drugs.

All I here is fanboy after fanboy. Truth be told, Nintendo did not create the idea of a motion sensor in a controller, they were however to popularize the idea. When you really think about it, the DS3 is completely different than the Wiimote. for

1, you hold the DS3 like a standard controller, similar to a steering wheel (PS3 racing games will kick ass while Wii's racing games won't)

2, The Wiimote can detect itself in a 3D environment. Not only can it detect it's angle like the DS3, it can also pinpoint it's X,Y,Z coordinates.

to number 18: I don't think you realize this but this has a lot to do with the PS3, first of all, Nintendo wanted to change video games, the DS3 prooves that they have succeded in that.

The Cube sells a little less then the Xbox and makes profit while the Xbox sells a little more but loses MS millions of dollars yet the Xbox is considered the success while the Cube was a failure? What kind of logic is that? The PS2 out sold both combined and made profit! The way I see it Nintendo rules the first party scene, Sony has multifunction and third parties, MS has Bill Gates and good public image. The sad thing is the Gamecube could out sell the Xbox. It's not far behind and some people may still get the Cube version of Zelda...

You guys can wave your arms around like retards and enjoy your mario and zelda.

Sony and Microsoft have more to offer... and are offering. Instead of waving my hands around i'd rather top-quality gameplay with a story worth playing... and mario just doesnt cut it.

Not to mention something 'worth' looking at on my HDTV.. oh wait that's right, the Wii is a gamecube 1.2.

im sure when nintendo just created the analog stick there was some douche bag like you saying "enjoy spinning your thumb around, im sticking to the classic d-pad" sadly youre an idiot. Motion sensitivity has been set as the path for the future, and dont call me a fanboy i have a 360, cant wait for ps3, and am very proud of wii.

The wii is a good idea, no doubt. It seems it will lack the edge needed to keep me entertained for very long. Hopefully sony, bill, or anyone will advance on the idea and combine it with their own magic to make it better. As picaso said "a good artist copy, a great artist steal". To me the wii seems good at best. i dunno, ill just wait and see...
