New Super Mario Bros. Wii - Image 1

When I hear the words "demo play", the first thing I think about are those old demos that used to kick in when you left a game in the "Press Start" screen for too long. Do they still have those these days? My gaming time's so compressed these days that I just keep mashing the Start button to get to the game as quick as possible.

Nintendo is taking the demo play idea to a whole new level, however. In an interview with USA Today, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that they're adding an optional feature -- called "demo play" -- that will make the Wii even more accessible by making games play themselves:

In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, if a player is experiencing an area of difficulty, this will allow them to clear troubled areas and take over when they're ready

It's not just for New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Future Wii games will also have this feature, said Miyamoto. Maybe the new Zelda will also have this feature, as Miyamoto has previously expressed a wish to make the series more accessible.

I don't know about you guys, but isn't this taking the whole accessibility thing too far? It kinda defeats the whole purpose of buying a game -- which is to, you know, play it. Of course, probably the main thing to remember here is that this feature is optional. If you don't need or want to use it, you don't have to. Sound off in the comments section.

Can you make the Wii experience even more dumbed down? Everyone, Upgrade to PS3 for a real experience, and get ready for the PS3 Wands. Dig the Wii only for Zelda now.

mm

ok but why not just "teleport" the player or freeze enemies atleast the freezing still gives some gameplay this is a new idea, im sure its been used. the reason why its not conventional is because its a ***** idea, end of anyway i always remember the best gaming experiences as those which took me years to complete as a child but now could do in seconds games are meant to stimulate the brain, and to some degree they do improve the person, sometimes intuition is needed to find away around something, and theres also the study which says gaming enhances sight so whaat nintendo is doing is, going the opposite of big brain traning and taking the fun out of games at the same time atleast sony isnt the only one on the fools train (btw i only own sony products, would usually vouche for them, but you have to admit they can ***** their customers over)
by dd409 - 2009-06-14 13:53:07
You know what they say...

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The PS3 Wand and 360 Natal are proof positive that the Wii is the best of the 3 systems, despite your protests.

....

ill turn it off. but i do like the idea, i think with this feature, nintendo can get the casual players to try hardcore titles.
by rpgpro001 - 2009-06-14 16:28:12
nintendo has to have them to work...

most games on the wii are very easy, excluding the somewhat difficulty of punch out after the first play through, and even then, there are training modes. after E3, one of the few games that excited me with the Wii was Metroid, other M. I will be very upset if they have a playthrough feature in it, due to the game being all about secrets.

!

@dd409 In what way is the Wii the best system? The WiiMote? The Sony Wand and Project Natal are coming... then what?
by MitchenX - 2009-06-14 18:34:21
nifty

this could prevent players from using unnessicary cheats. It is one thing to cheat if you are hopelessly lost or stuck.. but once you start cheating, it can be hard to stop... they aren't going to sell too many strategy guides, though... Not that they sold well anyway, as everyone uses FAQs now... they may as well leave it in... it could come in handy if you get lost or stuck, BUT if you insist on doing it yourself, you can just ignore the feature altogether. :)

@dd409

are you seriously calling the wii the best system? lmfao
by HenshinMijin - 2009-06-14 23:32:20
Worst thing since Master Balls..

This might be the scariest thing ever to happen to the Wii! Just the other day I got the Master Ball in Platinum, and I refused to play the game again until I duplicated the Master Ball.. Of course. But the thing is once you allow yourself to even cheat a lil bit, then the point of playing the game becomes lost. And it may be hard to feel like playing a game once you realize that you can just beat the game by putting in some numbers.. ANYWAY... allowing the game to play itself sounds very scary and hazardous to gamer enthusiasm.. "How could I even have fun playing this game, when the game can just play itself..?" fo shizzle ~K Dizzle™

yes... ish

conceptwise, very true. looks like sony and micro$oft are aiming at random casual not smashing buttons softcore players, following the cash cow wii. you cant deny that. for all that thought that wii was for kiddie games, get ready to see ps3 and x360 having some family friendly stuff. now cry, fanbois... the company of your preference is a sell-out indeed.
by Matt-N - 2009-06-15 06:49:59
!

@ joemontana03 What company isn't a sell-out? It's all about making money. The details are neither here nor there.
by ISOHaven - 2009-06-15 08:50:38
WTF!?!?!?!?!

@Matt-N You just proved his point. It's all about the MONEY. MS and Sony are following the MONEY. Nintendo knew where the MONEY was from the begining and scored big on it. Nintendo did it right from the begining and now everyone else is rushing to catch up. You can only CATCH UP to a LEADER.
by ISOHaven - 2009-06-15 08:55:20
WTF!?!?!?!?!

What's good for you isn't necessarily good for everyone else. Why would you EVER take away CHOICE from other people? This sounds like an AWESOME OPTION for people who otherwise can't play a full game. Younger Kids Disabled People The list can go on and on...

@ ISOHaven Ooooooooooh... I agree with you, my dear friend. My original question was in what OTHER way is the Wii better than the other two systems (assuming dd409 was refereeing to the WiiMote in the first place... and let's be honest, what else could it have been... memory space?). It was also a question from an end user's point of view. As you were.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

It's better in many ways. The point of a console is to PLAY IT. The Wii has gotten people who would NEVER play a console to play a console. More users + more play If this is a hardware discusion then you can all knock yourselves out until the cows come home. Power + Nothing Playing + Everything The best car doesn't have to be the one with the most HP.

Hopefully this will enable them to make their games harder. Zelda TP was a cakewalk.

retarded

Who really has problems beating 2d mario games? Oh yes, the new "casual" crowd Nintendo only cares about. Challenge makes games fun. If a game can play itself, what fun is that? Miamoron is getting senile in his old age.
by Mister Common Sense - 2009-06-15 19:05:49
Breakthrough ideas in making games less fun!

If a game plays itself, what really is the point of "playing" it? Is anyone that can't jump on goombas or throw some fireballs at bowser going to have any interest in watching a game play itself? LAMO!
by dre - 2009-06-15 22:31:40
and i thought the vitality sensor was dumb

i mean come on what ever happened to the varying difficulty scale where if a player is having a problem getting past a section or keeps dying then hint come on screen or the difficulty is lowered instead nintendo decides lets patend this idea of having the game play itself i mean games should start out easy with simple levels but get harder and harder isnt that better for a casual player than watching someone else play and did this really need to be patended i dont think sony and microsoft really want to steal this idea it's not like they have been looking for ways to make games less fun i think nintendo is really losing touch even with casual gamers

@ ISOHaven "The best car doesn't have to be the one with the most HP " How does that prove your point? It could be used straight back at you... and it will. The amount of units Nintendo shift does not concern me at all. It could be argued that more unit sales would result in more 3rd party support, but this is clearly not happening, as the hardware is too limited for the skills and aspirations of today's true game developers. So again, how popular the system is, has not benefitted me as a Wii owner at all. Most of the 'get-your-friends-round-for-a-good-time' games are all the same. While Mario and Zelda are amongst my favorite games, they're too few and far between to render the Wii as victor. I would be the first to say that many 360 and PS3 games are of the same genre, but that doesn't automatically give Nintendo the point, as all the systems are suffering in that department - in fact, more so the Wii, but I'll let that go for the point of this convo. "Everything" and "Nothing" WOW, now that IS an over exaggeration. If the Wii has, or is the definition of, EVERYTHING, why is the net smeared with Wii owners (and I mean gamers, not fat women trying to lose weight on WiiFit and grannies who bought it for when their grandchildren come to visit) complaining about the lack of hardcore games and general support from Nintendo? I've read more negative press than positive from Wii owners, myself being one. Doesn't bode well in my book. The lack of memory, along with the online play, certainly does not fall into the EVERYTHING category either. And please don't make me laugh with the mention of SD cards. Now on to NOTHING. I'm sure Halo, Gears of War, Project Gotham... LBP (don't like it myself), Uncharted, Killzone, inFamous, Metal Gear, Grand Turismo, and all the other exclusives between the two, along with the cross-format games like RE5, Modern Warefare, UT3, Burnout Paradise, Tekken... I'm getting board... plus the online gaming side of things, does not constitute as NOTHING. So, in my opinion, the above games list of the 360 and PS3, ALONG with the power of the two, beats the Wii with its lack of hardcore games and clearly pointless huge user-base. I'm really not seeing where you're getting this "It's better in lots of ways" from! So while your "car with the most HP" analogy maybe a valid point for another discussion (possibly about cars!), it clearly does not apply here. I also laughed at your "The point of a console is to PLAY IT" comment, on an article about the Wii playing itself. Bless.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

"The amount of units Nintendo shift does not concern me at all." Ignoring data is half your problem. "It could be argued that more unit sales would result in more 3rd party support, but this is clearly not happening, as the hardware is too limited for the skills and aspirations of today's true game developers." This entire comment is flawed in so many ways. 1. Why would you argue that? 2. That argument means nothing. 3. True game dev is YOUR definition. It's not a real definition or a standard. You're making up information. "So again, how popular the system is, has not benefitted me as a Wii owner at all." Again, this is worthless information because we are NOT talking about you. We are talking about the general population. You are trying to form this conversation into an aspect of how you have benefited from the console. Sorry, but I doubt anyone cares other then yourself. The topic was how Nintendo added to the industry. NOT how you have benefited. YOU alone are NOT the human race. "If the Wii has, or is the definition of, EVERYTHING, why is the net smeared with Wii owners (and I mean gamers, not fat women trying to lose weight on WiiFit and grannies who bought it for when their grandchildren come to visit) complaining about the lack of hardcore games and general support from Nintendo? I've read more negative press than positive from Wii owners, myself being one. Doesn't bode well in my book." My comments where in SCOPE of the conversation. Maybe you just missed it or maybe it's the fact that QJ doesn't know an equal sign from their a$$. My comment on everything was that PLAYING a console EQUALS EVERYTHING. I didn't say Nintendo was everything. How in the hell did you interpret that? As for your negative reviews comment....are you SERIOUS? How about you COUNT all those negative reviews then pit them against the number "50.65 million". You will quickly see just how small your little world is on the internet. "The lack of memory, along with the online play, certainly does not fall into the EVERYTHING category either. And please don't make me laugh with the mention of SD cards." Why the hell would I mention SD cards? Out of scope in this discussion of GAME PLAY. "Now on to NOTHING." You obviously completely missed it dude. Power EQUALS nothing. I didn't say MS and Sony are nothing. Gees!!!!!!! "So while your "car with the most HP" analogy maybe a valid point for another discussion (possibly about cars!), it clearly does not apply here." Wrong. It applies 100%. Your earlier comment was clearly along the lines of hardware. That was my take on your use of the term memory space. You know? Hardware.

@ iso

did you even read my comment Younger Kids and Disabled People they play a game get stuck then what the game just keeps getting harder and harder it's no fun having to constantly watch this thing play itself disabled people should be able to input their own custom controls to counter their disabilities (one hand) and young kids should have a super easy mode

"Younger Kids Disabled People The list can go on and on..." Can it? Any non-retard 5 year old can figure out a mario game. Do parents really want their 3 year olds watching a mario game play itself? Nintendo does, because then they will worship anything Nintendo their whole lives like ISOHeavy and other fantards. Is there disabled people that: A. can hold a controller B. can figure out how the game is played C. actually care to play a game D. like watching a game do something they cannot While, at the same time, they cannot play a simple mario game that a 5 year old could figure out? I can only laugh trying to think of a disabled person that would find crap like this useful.
by Mister Common Sense - 2009-06-16 17:08:08
More ISONonsense!

"It's better in many ways. The point of a console is to PLAY IT." Watching a game play itself is, by definiton, not actually playing it. "More users + more play" The Wii itself has proven that wrong. The Wii's reputation of catering to ages 4-90 (and nobody between 13-60) has changed their primary market from GAMERS that BUY and PLAY games OFTEN, to CASUAL players that use it twice a year at holidays. "If this is a hardware discusion then you can all knock yourselves out until the cows come home." It's not. Take your annoying expressions elsewhere. "Power + Nothing" Nothing? Why even have a Wii and get out the 2600 then? If it means nothing, then why not a Odyssey? "Playing + Everything" Playing perhaps, not watching a game play itself. "The best car doesn't have to be the one with the most HP." Sure, I know you'd rather have the minivan....

Perhaps the greatest feature I ever heard. Thank you Nintendo for understanding that, a person who just payed $50-$60 for a new game should be able to actually get through it, even if the game is hard. There's a lot of hard games out there, and most of them with no cheats. Well guess what, not everyone is great at every game. It's nice to know some companies understand that and try to help. Now if only Sony can get this in their games.
