Minority Report technology using Wiimote: finger tracking sensors

If any of you remember the movie "Minority Report", then you might remember the scene where Tom Cruise interacts with the keyboard-free, futuristic computers using a pair of "virtual gloves" to type in commands and drag windows while searching for the bad guys. If you think that's a little farfetched, believe it or not, such technology might not be so far off with a little ingenuity using your Wiimote.

Yes, I'm not kidding. If you're wondering how it's possible, we have a video uploaded by jcl5m below showing how this nifty little trick can be done.

Using the principle of infrared tracking that the Wii Controller uses for its motion sensors, you can actually reproduce the hand and finger tracking technology from the movie with the help of a few accessories that you can easily purchase from Radio Shack.

If you still don't believe me, go ahead and watch the video below. If you're a Sci-Fi buff like me, you'll probably be on your way to the nearest gadget depot store to try out this setup. Be careful though, holding up your hands for an extended period of time while playing the Wii can be tiring.

Cool

Cool idea. I'd like to see what kind of applications could be developed for this kind of thing. Nintendo should use this idea. I foresee a new "Power Glove" in the making. Granted, it would have to come with a new sensor bar that you attach your Wii remote control to.

not really

Not neccessarily. The 'glove' itself would just need to emmit infared light instead of bouncing it off like in the video.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

That was about as "FAR AWAY" from minority report as you could get. That solution would never work. It requires you to be far away from your screen. It requires you to be directly in front of your work space and the IR response is MUCH too slow. Minority Report was a super wide screen where you could stand at any point of the screen and perform work. As well as stand directly in front of the screen. Multi-touch displays are much closer to Minority Report then this IR garbage.

a little off minority report but not so horrible as the dude above me

that's pretty cool how it went the other way around (using the wiimote as a sensor bar). I wonder how this could be used. The only problem is that I imagine it'd get tiring curling your finger or closing your palms each time you don't want to interact with the screen. But damn, that's cool.

WTF!?!?!?!?!

I never said anything about it being horrible. I pointed out how it's nothing like Minority Report. If you like this "idea" then check out the REAL thing: http://cs.nyu.edu/~jhan/ftirtouch/
