PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii - Image 1Talks of a new generation of consoles have been heard in whispers lately, since we are nearing the end of the 4-5 year time span between console releases.

According to Microsoft's Robbie Bach though, this current generation is so good that we won't see a new generation anytime soon:

Just coming up with something that's faster and prettier isn't going to be sufficient.

The life cycle for this generation of consoles - and I'm not just talking about Xbox, I'd include Wii and PS3 as well - is probably going to be a little longer than previous generations.

At CES, he also said that Microsoft is sticking to the Xbox 360 longer than usual because fewer people want to upgrade. Seeing as we're smack dab in the middle of an economic crisis, I would say that that's the smart thing to do.

I'm glad this generation is going to last longer, the current gen of consoles is quite good. And we are going have a more awesome games to played on them.

» this generation

I'm honestly surprised to see somebody refer to the current console generation as "this generation". Usually, people refer to the current gen as next gen, which is the stupidest thing i've ever heard of.

I don't want to upgrade yet. There hasn't been that many great games for both systems yet. Okay there are a few but the length of the games as so short that it only takes a day to finish. People are barely starting to get HDTVs so I say no to next gen at least for 2-3 more years.

» Nah really?

Sony said this 2 years before the PS3 came out. Just wait M$ will be claiming this as an original thought in a couple weeks.

» Than Sony win

I have both a ps3 and an x360. But if things last longer, the ps3 will win in the long run, because of it's numerous own IP, like god of war 3 that will pop soon, it's current gen tech instead of the x360's ancien techs (DVDs... I mean, in my copy of lost odyssey, 3 DVDs were inside and placed, and another DVD were in a paper case... wow... and without an install, it's super ultra slow in loadings...). I think the ps3 will win from 2k10. M$ popped big names with star ocean going exclusive for exemple, but they won't have something against god of war 3. And white knight story will surely beat star ocean 4 in ratings (Level 5 always do 9.5 games...) for the JRPG section. Not a lot of exclusives for the year 2k9 too. For the shooters, Killzone 2 will surely be rated around 8.5 and not the 9.5 fanboys are hoping for, but it's still gonna be the best shooter out there for the time frame. Then Sony will move it's price to 299$ mid 2k9, surely with God of War 3 or FF13, hard to say. I don't think they will pop a 199$ price drop before 2 more years though. BUT they COULD, in 2k9, with the price reduction, pop a new slim model to boost sales. At least that's what I'd do, even if it's not the FINALslim. And since sony said they were now at 45mn chips, it would fit. And since Japs LOVE slim versions, a part of ps3 owners might even buy another just to have the slim one... Then Sony would win the year by a good margin (not large because of the price of the x360, and M$ will surely do tons of ads to conter sony, while sony won't do much ads I'd say (they biggest problem is their ads for sony). Anyway, my gess.

It seems like all of these systems just came out and already they're answering the questions about upgrading.. I'll bet in a few generations computers and game consoles will almost be alike, with the ability to upgrade simply by replacing an accessory. Sort of how you can change the hard drives on the PS3 and 360, but with RAM and stuff.. But who knows.

» I agree with something a MS rep says?

Never thought I'd see a day. It barely feels like this gen has gotten started, so hell no to the 4-5 year span. BTW most are 6 or so, not 4-5 and in Sony's eyes 10,

I feel that such leaps and bounds in innovation - in terms of the kinds of things we're doing in games, the varied types and the over all freshness of just about every genre leads to much more that can be done to improve play. That's not even touching on the hardware side of things where developers are now just learning how to pump out better and better looking, performing & sounding games. Take the Uncharted series for example - the first looked great, but it's sequel looks to whoop it's a$s in that department - and it's not 2 years since we got the first.

It's like developers are just scratching the surface of this generation of gaming and it has a long ways to go.

Yeah, I know what you mean.

» no wonder

since those consoles are much harder to hack - they'll be a good source for income for a while, since there is almost no pressure from "backup" playing public, and sony/ms can milk as much cash as they want from fans.

when consoles get hacked, games usually start to appear with more competitive prices. and that's usually when hardware developers start thinking of bringing another generation to the market - to protect their profits (for a while).

and wii are hacked only ps3 can't be used to play "backups"

» The hell?

NES was around for something like ten years. SNES and Genesis were something like eight or nine. Playstation 1 was around for eleven years, according to Wikipedia. So...four to five years?? Seems to me we're barely cresting the midpoint.
