Microsoft talks on Thanksgiving hardware numbers |
Ó

It's been a busy week this Thanksgiving for Microsoft, who reports that it had to replenish supplies to top retailers who had sold out of Xbox 360s for the shopping week. Microsoft ended with total sales of 310,000 units for the week, 40,000 units shy of the Nintendo Wii's own numbers, a gap that could have been wider if not for the Wii shortage.
Microsoft also reports that a big percentage of sales are made up of the successful Xbox 360 Arcade unit, which "performed above what [Microsoft] expected." Aaron Greenberg of Microsoft attributes a large percentage of units to the Arcade console.
Greenberg adds that the Xbox 360 is getting a better grip on the mass market, saying that their more family-oriented games like Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, PC) and Scene It are "a huge hit. [...] Hopefully that trend will continue." Jeff Bell of Microsoft also recently commented that the 360 is actively competing with the Wii in the casual gaming market.
Microsoft also commented that it outsold the PS3 2 to 1 for retail estimates during that week. Sony dispute this saying that while they won't release their official numbers until the NPD group does (on December 13), they do comment that: "Microsoft's estimates of our PS3 unit sales numbers are way off and they did not outsell PS3 2:1 during Black Friday week."
If the Thanksgiving week was this busy, it'll be interesting to see what the Christmas season would bring.

I wonder how many parents thought they we getting a good deal with the 360 arcade and then relize no hardrive or wireless online capabilties without add ons/ which adds more expense. Then their stuck with a $275.00 console that they have upgrade to make the kiddies happy.
Smart move on MS sales dept.
If parents don't know what they're buying when they spend $275 then they obviously shouldnt be spending money. There's plenty of advertising distinguishing between the three 360 SKUs, all one has to do is wonder why there are three versions of the same console to figure it out.
While I agree that they shouldn't be spending the money if they don't know what they are buying, but seriously you have to do a little research if you are not a gamer to figure out the differences between skus.
I mean for a while some XBOXs didn't even have HDMI ports. Then the parents have to decide if the more expensive console is worth it etc, it's pretty complicated for your "average" parent or grand parent.
I have a nephew who is getting a 40 gig ps3 cause its cheaper then the 80 or 60 gig , Even though I told his grandma which model would suit him better. The sales person told her this is a better deal. I feel backward compatability is worth 100 bucks.
I think alot of kids are getting stuck with wii's cause of the price. When they might want a 360 or ps3. Sorry for wii bashing , but my kids got bored unfortunatley quick.
Really, I would actually think the opposite. I mean it is HARD to get a Wii, most parents I know are giving their kids other consoles because they can't find a Wii.
That's were the $275.00 360 hits the mark. Cheap wii is not available , but the 360 is only 25 bucks more . Not realizing the stripped down model they have bought.
Price has definetley hurt the ps3 .
