Microsoft exec doubts Wii can keep gamers interested

Chris Satchell, and some waterNot much else you can say to a headline like that. Chris Satchell, the GM for Microsoft's Game Development Group said something along those lines in an interview with Games Industry.

In the interview, he questions the Wii's ability to remain big in the long term, despite Nintendo's console being one of the fastest-selling consoles ever. "I think the Wii is of interest," he says. "I'm not sure what its long-term potential is. It's a super-strong for Nintendo's first-party IP, but beyond that"

Also in the interview, is his reservations about Sony's online services compared to theirs, as well as their approach to the market. He mentions, "I don't think Sony has the right focus. I'm not even sure, looking at how they execute, that they even think that it's important."

While trying to remain unbiased, he does happen to throw out a lot of fighting words. Each company does have their strong points and their problem spots, and we can safely say that it's too early to make any sort of prediction. We wonder what he'll be thinking after a year has passed and we see what developers, hackers, and homebrewers can really make out of the systems. Until then, he may want to temper his words for future interviews.

Speaking of interviews, you may want to see the actual interview itself, which is linked at the bottom of our sourced page. Happy reading.

» those kind of topics are useless

I mean, it's not like M$ will say: "wow, nintendo did a great job, stop buying our xbox 360, it's nothing compared to the wii", lol.

anyway, nintendo will be great, but not from start, I mean, only zelda is awesome ( and I bought it on my GC instead ). But when square-enix will pop new games on it, it'll change ( maybe DQX? or another version of the 9 ? dunno ) because right now it only lack RPGs ( like the xbox 360 ).

And what he said about sony? lol, this is so common, I mean, it's not the 1st time M$ execs say those kind of things, but they just cannot compare, I mean, sony have 40 player games online for free soo...

» First Sony Attack, Now this?

Haha Microsoft is certainly looking for a console war this year...Seriously what has gotten into Microsoft? I love Bill Gates, hes a kind man whose willing to donate to charity but what is this other side of Microsoft; its filled with bullcrap. Are they trying to find the true successor of the next generation gaming industry? Why can't we gamers join hands for more important things?

» lol

but he's right... i mean, looks ati wii's hardware... graphics DO CARE... no one plays Psone (as primary console) nowadays.

i bet you guys will have to buy a "wii2" in the next two years.

by HG99 - 2006-12-20 15:54
» also...

after all these years of current gen graphics, I think the majority of casual gamers will get bored of the graphics and move on to the HD platform.

by ContrAss - 2006-12-20 16:16
» huh?

whatever happened to the mantra: Wii60 for life???

And seriously, this guy shouldn't get *****y. They're not the ones that sold over 100 million consoles last generation and they haven't even hit their mark of 10 million yet.

by AzaMcWazza - 2006-12-20 16:17
» Err yeah

And the combined total of a Wii + Wii2 will be a little more than a 360 is now, so you get 2 consoles for the price of one, and one you can resell if you want. Combined with getting it now at a good price.

People do care about graphics sure, but a lot of casual gamers don't even think about it and they're a bigger potential market than the graphics whores. They want fun, easy to play social games and stuff like that.

If the Wii is like The DS, then Nintendo will be #1 again. But I'd like to ask what kind of games the Microsoft people played BEFORE the Xbox. I bet a lot that more than half had a Nintendo console. If true, its sort of strange how these people can flame Nintendo, both Microsoft and its fanboys. Nintendo has pulled off some crazy stuff, like bringing back gaming into America, and staying alive in 3rd place for TWO generations. Dont doubt Nintendo.

nintendo stayed in 3rd place for 2 generation? haha i think you mean they stayed in 'last' place for 2 generation straight. think about it! n_n

» Last place?

MS took a HUGE hit making the XBOX..... they may have sold more consoles than Ninty but they lost money. Last time I checked Nintendo was profitable every year through the gamecube era. If sheer console volume mattered then each company would just give them out for free and see how many go out. It is $$$$ in the end. MS games division has lost every year of its existence thus far. Deeper and deeper it goes, but Nintendo has always been profitable, granted they are not as overall profitable as Sony games division is.

by Xelos - 2006-12-21 00:05
» Well MS...

Well Microsoft...

Graphics dont impress me so much more (to the point that its that what make me buy a game/console)... Guess xbox360 cant keep gamers interested for all people like me who have grown tired on just new betetr/improved graphics only.

OMG xb360 is teh d00med...

They all attack each other. This is a very competitive business. It just seems Microsoft has a better argument most of the time. Many of $ony's "we're better than you" attacks really don't make sense.

I love how now Wii is dominating everything that the other two are trying to bring the product name down, hilarious.

by Duder - 2006-12-21 03:34
» Gotta Sell em Some How

I think Nintendo's got one of the best marketing teams in the business. If you look at it, Nintendos has done their best to show that it isn't graphics, but the ability to have fun. Microsoft also has a touch marketing team that is well managed as well. Sony on the other hand looks like they have communication problems amongst all the other teams within. I'm not a Sony hater since I do enjoy the PS2 now and again. It just seems that Sony is taking this weird road that many are a little skeptical to follow. Again, If you were to say "Well our system is great when it comes to graphics, but hell Nintendo knows what people want check it out" I doubt you are going to sell crazy amounts of the product you are trying to push out. Rivalry leads companies to try harder and push better games out. Also, once in a while, if you’re lucky, you may even see a price reduction here and there. I wouldn't be surprised if PS3 comes out and surprises us, but I doubt that would be anytime soon. Better to just sit back and see how things turn out. Enjoy the show =D

» I am with the guy in parts

I recently bought a Wii and it was very fun for a few days but then after the new excitement was over I cam back to my XBOX 360.

The Wii is definitely fun when I have friends over because they are not in the video games so much and the Wii is easy to play but due its lack of on-line game play it is hard to keep me into it just playing by myself.

The XBOX 360 Online experience is much more mature and rich in features and can keep me more involved for longer time.

Unless Nintendo speed up the development of online experience and force the game producers to add online gaming it will be far behind after a while.

by haaaaa - 2006-12-21 10:41
» dude

(WRONG!!) -

where were you when all these 360 fans brag about the profits the 360 is making. you should put those dudes to rest.

by *****taky - 2006-12-21 11:38
» last place

although M$ is definitely losing money on the console they are making, they make up for these loss from the games they sell. and even though the nintendo were able to profit from their own consoles, there were just not many consumers going around buying their games.

by hmm - 2006-12-21 11:48
» well

I'm not sure I agree. I have a 360 and played it well I have. Even have 17 or so game (yes Gears too) but once I bought the Wii ^^(yes I did!!) 360 is just a nice movie player now. I can't stop playing Nintendo's console it's just brilliant

by Spector - 2006-12-21 17:05
» oh come on

There is plenty to be had in single player game experiences and not everything needs to be online.

The fact that games focus more on the online play instead of the single player sometimes leaves games coming up dry offline. It'd be nice if there could be a focus on both.

Wii has plenty of games to play that aren't just for when you have friends over. If the DS has proven anything it's that stuff that some people may call gimicky is in fact just great.

Also with all those damn 13 year olds mic spamming on XBL it's no wonder I don't enjoy that "mature" experience.

I mean really if you had to list the best games ever it would be nothing to do with online playing.

» i Will Correct some False information Here..

To be breif...

xbox360 manufacturing cost is about 360$....and retails for 400$ [for the premium]

xbox360 fans should be happy...that company [takes 40$ for every unit sold]....this greatly due to the fact that the 360 is hugely based on current-gen technology [Dvd,small hdd,no wifi,no bluetooth,no HDMI,no bluray]

on the other hand....sony,s PS3 cost an average of 820$ and retails for as low as 500$ since the system is made entirely of next-gen technologies.[blu-ray,bluetooth,c ell processor,HDMI...etc]

for each PS3 sold....PAY ATTENTION NOW....sony loses about 300$.

That means for each unit...[sony loses an xbox360 core]...or [a wii and a game] for its consumers..

and they call it a Greedy company....naive humans...

by walkingdogs - 2006-12-22 03:54
» @broken

the 360 may only cost $360 to make and cost $400 at retail but the retail chains buy the system for less than they sell it for and in places like best buy each store is responsible for ordering its own products from the corporate warehouses which is more than what best buy the corporation pays MS directly for it. Also microsoft has had to repair thousands of 360's at their cost. So in short, yes the 360 may sell for more than its production costs but in no way is MS making $40 per console and the main reason it has not lowered price is because of the money it's costing them to repair all the 360 bricks. Sorry , no profit for MS on the 360!!

» buisness tactics

You gotta take shots at your biggest threats to prove a point and from what I see nintendo is smoking sony, its not even fair. M$ cant be happy. Nintendo will probably be out selling 360 after christmas next year. But there is always the chance of a 360 price drop x-mas next year, it will the 2 year point since system launch.
