Michael Pachter notes NPD report's "discrepancies"

When you looks at sales reports from the eyes of several analyst groups, expect discrepancies. Wedbush Morgan Securities' (WMS) analyst Michael Pachter makes this point, as he identified what appeared to be anomalies in NPD's recent sales report.

"There was a discrepancy between the number of Wii units claimed to have been shipped by Nintendo to North America - approximately 2 million - and the cumulative sell-through measured by NPD - approximately 1.1 million," Michael remarked on the group's sales reports for the Nintendo console, "This difference alone is almost impossible to reconcile."

Moving on with his commentary, Pachter also found clashes in software sales reports. "Again, it's not easy to reconcile NPD's figures with other company claims. For example, GameStop claimed its software sales were up 18 per cent in November-December. However, NPD figures show that November-December software sales growth was only 6 per cent," Pachter said.

As for how the year was for the three next-gen consoles, Pachter felt that Sony had the best month of the three, with Nintendo enjoying high sales, and Microsoft enjoying "the largest share of next-gen console hardware and software sales." As he said collectively about the figures: "Everybody's a winner."

Sony Raked on the Profit....And Most People Bought the PS2,Even the PSP Proved that it is a Far Better System Even with all the Bashing.

Nintendo Did Overall Well....With Good Sales

this Proves What i Have said Earlier....That the 360 Didnt Offer the Consumer a Reason to Convert....And Most Bought a PS2..

I Believe Next Christmass Will Be Even Harder for MS,Even with Halo3 Shipment...But we will Have to Wait and See.

Oh and that PS2 that was a big seller everyone sold is a PS3 left on the shelf when they become available.

Did you forgot that the PS2 also almost sold as many as the PSP and the PS3 combined?.

You can't compare old hat last gen consoles with their matching price to the next gen ones the FACT is the 360 outsold all of the other next gen consoles combined and M$ did not feel they had to price drop either.

Oh and did you miss the software sales the biggest selling title GEARS OF WAR 360 "exclusive" outsold any other title on any console

360 GEARS OF WAR - MICROSOFT 815,700

PS2 GUITAR HERO 2 WITH GUITAR - ACTIVISION 805,200

And that 2nd best title is coming to the 360 in March and go take a look at how impressive it is looking for the 360 and it has downloadable XBL content.

The consumer didn't convert is nonsense it's all about parents and price at Christmas time and yes most bought a PS2 they would of done exactly that to if the PS3 were available as well.As I said M$ didn't price drop as they don't see the PS2 as a threat.

Next year 360 is going to hope on Halo? what the hell are you talking about have you seen all the AAA titles (many exclusive)comin g out on the 360 this year(especially March) maybe you should go have a look at the list and then rethink what you say..Oh and I bet those developers are saying "let's ignore "Gears of war" sold 2.8 million copies in 6 weeks that's only around 100million pounds" YER RIGHT.

The PS2 sales are not a very good forecast for the PS3,we wanted a 360 at release but it was not available until after Christmas so we were told we could have one as soon as it came out and we got one soon after,if we would of not waited and chosen the PS2 over the 360 we certainly couldn't of expected to get the 360 as well so I would agree with the "every PS2 sold is a PS3 left on the shelf" saying as well.

Micosoft (while its console sold ok) didnt sell like M$ NEEDED it to. They did lose alot this holiday season. (ESPECIALLY in Japan).

"Fact" IS Microsoft have broken the 10million barrier and it is a now proven console and is here to stay,it's the other consoles who are playing catchup,just look at Gears incredible sales in such a short time and was only on 360 format, that alone tells the developers which machine they will make money from as the machine is at such an early age in it's lifespan.

M$ know exactly what they are doing and they know they have the upcoming software that will sell to the Japenese market over the next 12 months.

The biggest loser was Sony and the PS3 that certainly didn't sell like Sony needed it to neither.

And I think everyone now knows that that important decision by a certain Industry (that sells more media than the games and just about all other entertainment added together) and who decided the fate of Betamax has again made their decision and again have gone for the opposition format HD-DVD and I believe that is also the chosen format of the 360 isn't it?.

you need to go back many months ago and find out when microsoft said they'll hit the 10 million mark, because they said it a LONG time ago.

And why can't you size up the PS2 with the 360? You'd figure with this being "next-gen" the 360 has the goods to sell itself to people everywhere! But fact is they don't. They need to buy out as many PS2 titles as they can--Guitar Hero 2 anyone?

Both Sony and MS missed their targets. MS originally forecasted 20 million by end of 2006 and Sony said 2 million. Both sold half of this.

Buying out titles is all hardware companies aim where possible, the differnce is M$ has the most buying power and guitar Hero 360 is going to be a huge hit and the company that make it and M$ are not stupid they know it.Oh and you forgot to mention Just Cause (anyone?)and 1 other 360 title is now going to the PS3 so don't that prove the fact that Sony do it to?.

Actually it was a porn producer. The largest porn producer Vivid are producing on blu-ray first and maybe HD-DVD if they have enough demand in the market.

With satellite, internet access - porn no longer gets to decide the formats. It's a fantasy this is still true. 20 years later we have moved on. "Improved" visuals are different from yes or no access as was the case with betamax and vhs

almost all ps3 shipment fron launch until december 31 were sold.

where's the downfall? downfall of what? future ps3 shipments? then what you are saying shouldnt be in this topic, it should in your future wishes.

miccrosoft did great sales too but not reaaly up to the degree that the nintendo wii did, nintendo sold 1.1 million wii's from launch until dec 31. xbox 360 did also sell 1.1M units but ps2, psp, ds sold way more. sony and nintendo gain a lot of profit from their previous gen consoles. get your facts right OK.

here's some news to you xbox 360 fan boys.

M$ didnt do well here in japan.

even gameboy advance SP has triple hardware sales than xbox360.

there's also an unknown conspiracy (the cons maybe untrue but the ignorance is real) among retailers here in japan where almost all over japan xbox360 demo machine dont run at all, just black screens. i visited a lot of game stores (around 20) and found only 1 working xbox360 demo machine. nothing fanboys can do about since its the japanese thats ignoring the machines.

now since xbox360 dont do well here in japan M$ should exert extra effort to up their sales on other territory just to compensate for their lossos here. around 30% sales.

softly gently M$ is running out of juice here. with only blue dragon and gears of war to support them oh how cruel the japs are to M$, metal gear portable ops gained multiple times more than the sales of those 2 xbox 360 titles combined. by the way you M$ should not comment on what ive said because this is a PS3 news. http://ps3.qj.net/?pg=49&aid=79228
