Media watchdog group wants MadWorld ban, gamers say shut up

The Wii was already deprived of Grand Theft Auto IV and now Mediawatch UK wants to have MadWorld banned from it too - in Britain, at least.

The self-appointed media watchdog group told UK tabloid the Daily Mail that it wanted the BBFC to a rating for the game, making it effectively banned from the region. Said John Beyer, the organization's director:

This game sounds very unsavoury. I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification. Without that it cannot be marketed in Britain.

We need to ensure that modern and civilized values take priority rather than killing and maiming people. It seems a shame that the game's manufacturer has decided to release this game exclusively on the Wii. I believe it will spoil the 'fun for all the family' image of the Wii.

This feels a bit confusing for me. Is the issue about violence in video games, or that the game ruins Beyer's idea of the Wii being a "family" console? At any rate, it wasn't long before their inbox was flooded with "hostile emails" telling them to "shut the f- up," and others to that extent. Mediawatch reacted:

Within hours of these remarks being published a rain of hostile emails from gamers poured into our office telling us to "shut the f*** up", [...] demanding, as though we were on trial for an heinous crime, to know what right we had to impose our "narrow minded bigotry" on them and stopping them playing an "adult" game of their choice.

Others, of a more sober character, asked reasonably why we should be so concerned about games when there was so much violence in films and on television! We were also accused us of being "cowards" for not responding properly to belligerent strictures and one Â‘emailer' observed glibly that "violent acts are not a symptom of video games and films, but rather the human condition". Another said: "If you don't like violent content, don't view or use it".

Others thanked us cynically for drawing attention to the game saying they would rush out and buy it as soon as it was available. Yet others told us to focus on retailers and said that parents should safeguard their children from "adult" games.

It goes on like that. Their main conclusion stands this way: "It is evident from this that the battle for standards has rather shifted away from television towards games and the internet." Right. As much as video games have become big over the past few years, I doubt it's influence is bigger than television.

More people need to do this! Too much attention is directed towards video games and away from the real cause. Stop blaming cartoons and start going after the real problems. I'm not about to play Mortal Kombat and then start freezing people randomly in the middle of the street. Out of the millions of people who've bought/played GTA, there may be a hundred violent incidents related to that game. Out of millions. Then you have to take in the state of mind of the individual.

Yea the Wii is a family console but if you have games like this and other adult games then it becomes an all round console.

It needs some adult games to totally win all gamers.

Manhunt 2 and Mad World make it the winner console. All it needs now is some better graphics.

1 example. My daughter plays it all the time but I dont touch the Wii. When Mad World comes out I will also be playing it.

I'm not going to continue to repeat myself on this issue of "Violent (pick your medium) = Violent Behavior".

My old ass has seen enough around this world to notice when someone is hiding something.

All of the majorly organized "Save the Children" or "Save the Stupid from Themselves" campaigns or groups that ***** and moan the loudest are eventually found to be an actual perpetrator of whatever crime they seem to rallying against.

I.e., the public official that organizes a brutal task force to prosecute prostitutes when in fact he is visiting the whorehouse so often that he has a marble name plaque in his parking space.

Any village idiot knows that no person or thing can force you to do what you know is right or wrong.

I would venture a guess that 80% of these anti-violence advocates had their asses beaten on a regular basis when in grade school. For whatever reason, they probably couldn't or didn't fight back. Now, this may be their answer as to how to combat (yes I chose the right word. Contradicting isn't it?) what they deem as being a possible activator.

Reality is, all creatures are set up with a survival instinct. Granted, as human beings we have turned it into competition (work environments, Athletics) more than the original plan to literally fight over who gets to eat the 3 day old carcass. ANYONE to say that this is a controllable nature has NEVER seen combat (been in the actual arena).

Suffice to say, if society were to decay this Human Function would come back into the lime light and perpetuate the species. Obviously no one wants to live in fear and worry that Ogg down the street is going to kill them, rape their corpse and then eat them (or whatever order of events that you like), so I am inclined to promote a healthy blend of both, the conditioned and instinctive natures.

Sports is one avenue for those that can handle the contact, games, movies and any form of spectatorship is an equal substitution.

To deny it is to deny your own humanity.

There is no Sweet without the Sour. Flesh and Violence NEVER go out of style, so unless we all become celestial beings, **** ain't gonna change real soon...
