OddWorld - Image 1The Oddworld series was one of the best game franchises back in the PlayStation One days, but its star slowly faded when the last console cycle rolled in. Just when we all thought that we may never see the quirky Abe again, a big announcement was made in the most unlikely of places.

In a statement hosted by the Wilfrid Laurier University, Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun revealed that he is currently working with the people over at OddWorld Inhabitants, the studio behind the successful franchise. He confirmed that a new game is under development and he described a powerful new set of tools that could revolutionize game graphics as we know it.

He didn't say much in terms of launch windows or storylines, but he did guarantee that CG movie-quality visuals are now possible on games with the right set of tools recently made available. He said that his team is using that cutting edge gear right now, and efforts are being made to maximize their potentials.

"The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects," he said. "The tools are finally getting to the level where we can come out with a show and we can come up with a game."

He did remind everyone not to start peeing their pants in anticipation for those things. He said that it could take years for these things to hit the market. Until then, titles like Crysis would still be the stick by which visuals are measured.

» WTH?

Oddworld Inhabitants closed down their game-based studios after Stranger's Wrath was released, and said they wanted to work on movies. Now, they want to make a game with CG Movie graphics? Wow, just wow. That's good, but what's up with all these devs going back on their word?

» This would need at least the next generation of consoles...

And I am not talking about the PS3, we need something much more powerful than that to even attempt at having movie quality graphics. Let me make this clear, our current graphics are not even at the level of movies 5--8 years ago. Not even the most powerful computers can do anything close to graphics we see today in movies. Crysis isn't even close. Look at Beowulf and your breath will be taken away. Trust me, this is a marketing ploy, their tools will at best bring them to a level where it exceeds Crysis, there's where PS4 is needed, or xbox 720.

» Graphical 'Tricks'

If what they're saying is remotely true, I can see them using illusions, of sorts. For instance, where an object may look like a beautifully rendered 3D, movie-quality object, it may just be rendered in 2D, but it just looks 3D. The lower processing power required for drawing the 2D image allows for a smoother framerate, as well as the fact that they can just 'draw' detail onto it, rather than craft it from several angles. Such graphical 'tricks' are used more often than you might think.

Apparently you think that graphics from NOW will NEVER improve. Developers of PS3 and 360 have all said that they haven't come close to using the full potential of today's consoles. I also assume you weren't around last gen when obviously, as the years went on, graphics were improved greatly.

The dev quoted in this article already said that we will have to wait a few more years for this to happen, but it's obvious we will see it done on PS3, X360 and possibly PC.
