Masteroids - multiplayer Asteroids invades the Wii - Image 1

Another look at the latest in the homebrew games department for the Nintendo Wii has led to the discovery of MAsteroids (not related to PC freeware Masteroids). The Asteroids clone developed by coder Feesh, who hopes to make MAsteroids (short for Multiplayer Asteroids) true to its namesake, even if you have only two sets of Wii remotes and Nunchuks.

But that support is still under development. The initial release of MAsteroids only supports 4 classic Gamecube controllers or 4 Wii remotes, but soon enough, you could have a pal zoom around debris fields on an attached Nunchuk.

It leaves a lot of room to dream team competitive matches, but right now, there's only (deathmatch) competitive and cooperative modes with adjustments to friendly fire.

Now that all sounds like fun, but homebrew developer Feesh does point out that he cannot be responsible for mishaps that may happen while playing the game. He added:

I wish I didn't have to say this, but I have tested the game extensively during it's development and even though I believe I have removed all chances of a bug, it may still be possible either due to, or not due to any fault of my own that the game may crash and in some rare instance and brick your Wii. That is why, although I'd like for you to try this game, you must accept if anything does happen to your Wii as a direct result of running this game that I, the author, can claim no [liability]. Keep this in mind whilst you try Masteroids.

Having second thoughts? We can't blame you. But if testers are brave enough to see what harm MAsteroids could do to their Nintendo Wii consoles, those hidden bugs could be ironed out in due time. Feesh has also recorded a no-audio video of the game in action. Check it out:

This homebrew game isn't bundled with documentation, but for users of the Wii Homebrew Channel, just file the extracted contents under a MAsteroids directory (masteroids is fine) in the apps folder of your HBC SD card. For the rest, there's always a homebrew loader to toy with. Enjoy!
