Mark Morris: Photorealism doesn't equal good gaming

While nVidia's VP has stated that good graphics are one key component to good gaming, Introversion Software's Mark Morris thinks otherwise.

In a recent interview, Introversion's director said that his company was unlikely to produce a photo-realistic title in the near future - a trend which he observed was becoming commonplace among other developers.

What I think happens too often is that [developers] sort of go, 'WeÂ’re going to show you the best graphics youÂ’ve ever seen and then we might pack a bit of gameplay or a little bit of entertaining fun on at the end," he said, noting that he thought it was "a very bad thing to do.

Detailing his stance, Morris did say that he thought that good graphics are still an essential part of a game in the way they draw players in. The problem, according to him, was that developers became so focused on developing high calibre graphics that the race was beginning to resemble a similar gaming trend back in the 1980s. "I think theyÂ’re stuck in the Â‘80s when graphics in games were so rubbish, that every time a new game came out, the graphics would improve slightly and that would be really so important."

And taking a cue from Taylor's previous quip about lack of graphics being like watching "24" in black-and-white on a 7-inch screen, Morris pointed out that "24"'s forte was its story-telling style on TV - each episode happened in real time.

[ItÂ’s] nothing that you can get from any other medium other than television. So when [Taylor] says itÂ’s like watching 24 on a small screen, I think itÂ’s nonsenseÂ… If I owned a cinema, I could go and run 24 on my cinema screen and it would get slightly better. But the real joy of 24 is that it maximizes the particular medium of television like nothing has ever done before. So I think when he uses that quote he picked a bit of a bad example.

This interview comes in light of the more highly anticipated visuals-heavy titles some of the fans here may be waiting up for, such as Halo 3, Lair, or Final Fantasy XIII. It will also be noted that Introversion is most famous for titles like DEFCON and Darwinia. Kudos to ssj3fox for this hot tip.

I would like to note the draw distance and graphic quality are completly different things................... A racing sim can only look so realistic, like any game would.

I hope all the stupid developers realise that and start working on improving gameplay , a much harder asset to improve thangraphics, yet easily as important, dar more so in my opinion.

Some games that look real good don't have very much gameplay or depth. Look at Virtua Fighter 5 for instance. It's getting kind of boring already. It is a game that looks better than some but there is no depth. Sadly it's not much better than the original if you consider gameplay. I'm glad I only rented it.

I mean, I have supreme commander but I still play age of empire 3 and c&c generals instead because the game sucks.

Same with almost any good SRPG or RPG, ff tactics remain on of the best srpg for me and the old ffs beat the crap out of ff12 ( ff12 was good, but not great because of it's poor story ( or lack of it ) ).

But in sports game, driving games and some other games, the graphic is the key, because is a racing game... you drive... that's it, so you need great graphics to back it up!! but in SRPGs you don't need any graphics because the game ask you a lot to do so you don't care about the graphics ( ps: makai kingdom is the perfect SRPG and it's only ~3D with old graphics, yeah, but the game is great, play fast, and you can build up till lvl. 9999

Great graphics and great gameplay are not mutually exclusive, they can co-exist in one title.

I wish people would stop saying that one is better than the other, as that all depends on the gamer that's playing the game.

Photorealism can immerse you as much as amazing gameplay can, as will a great storyline. A game with these three combined is guarunteed to be an impressive game.

if i only played ps2 up until three months ago i would think those graphics were photorealistic too. fortunately ive known xbox360 was better since the day it came out. i really feel sorry for you guys.
