libdi, DVDX installer for Wii released - Image 1

Thanks to QJ.NET Forums member TheSilenceOfNoOne, we've been tipped to the recent release of libdi, the Wii homebrew community's new DVD access library, and the DVDX installer from Wii homebrew source Hackmii. Erant of Hackmii, the author, says,

As you all know, IÂ’ve been working on libdi (or the DVD Access library) for a while now. We had some problems getting it out to release because of the difficulties we encountered while writing the second part of this topic. The DVDX installer instead will install a small, hidden, channel on your Wii that allows you to read DVDs on an unmodified system. It is not an installer for a patched IOS. You may however need one, depending on your system.

Now there's still a way to get DVDX to install on modified systems, but you'll have to get the patchmii as well before the DVDX Installer. Developers are encouraged to practice with the library, using the DVDX extension as a way to read data from standard format DVDs.

For example, developer dhewg has come up with a sample homebrew app based on libdi - a full-featured media player.  More updates on the homebrew scene as we come across them.

Once again, thanks to TheSilenceOfNoOne for the tip.

» so what is this exactly

can some 1 explain it to me, does this enable the wii to read normal copied dvds?

does that mean it can play dvd movies and backups?

by Silver-Tiger - 2008-08-12 23:52
» not exactly

It's a program that allows you to access normal burned DVDs on your Wii. You could run homebrew from a DVD or install WADs from it as far as I know, and you could run movie DVDs under the media player of dhewg I think, but Backups of Wii games are not possible at the moment.

» Awesome

The DVD player works great! Just watched Planet Terror on my Wii and it ran perfectly. I can't believe Nintendo didn't include this. The controller is a frickin' remote!!!

Anyway, I knew they'd eventually release a fix to let an unmodded Wii read non-Wii discs. Only a matter of time before an ISO loader comes around.

But looking at the PSP... Do we really want that?

by omegaridley - 2008-08-13 07:59
» yea

dude, more people want an ISO/Backup loader on the wii than u think;) even if the PSP's piracy is bad, the wii can/will also become just as bad even if they look at the PSP.

Ok so I just need to clarify some things, do you have to have homebrew channel installed to run this hack, and if not how do you do it? I've tried a few times but havent gotten it to work. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

i havent tried this yet, but i believe u need the twilight hack or the homebrew channel

by Specht - 2008-08-13 17:08
» I'd use the Homebrew Channel.

If you used the Twilight Hack you'd just end up switching discs...

is your Wii modified with a drive chip? If it isn't, all you do is go to the 'apps' folder on the root of your SD card, and create another folder. Place the 'installer.dol' file in that folder, and rename it to 'boot.dol'. Next, copy the 'mplayer' folder into the 'apps' folder. Now, go into the Homebrew Channel, boot the installer, and select 'Normal Install'. After it installs, I believe you select 'Quit' or 'Exit', and it will take you back to the Homebrew Channel. From there, start the MPlayer homebrew application.

If you have a drive chip, I'm not quite sure on what it is that you probably have to do.
