Let the next-gen wars begin... |

The video game console wars have been in existence since the 1980's. We are now at the seventh generation of this console war. One thing remains, though: the console that offers more fun wins.
From 4th to the 6th generation of console gaming (16-bit console era), graphics and sound were the themes. New consoles at these eras promised to revolutionize visuals and sound quality. Today, gamers have become more demanding: they need not only eye candy games, they are clamoring for multi-user, network-centric gaming.
Mind-blowing graphics and sound are still major factors for choosing a console, it's the testament of how 'high'end' a machine is. But this alone would not spurn a console to the top. The primary reason a gamer chooses a console is because it offers games that has content, gameplay, and fun factor. Truly, gamers have grown up.
How will the three major console vendors wiggle their way to the hearts (and pockets) of the 7th generation gamers? E3 gave us an idea.
The Xbox 360 has been the first 7th generation console to hit the market. Microsoft demonstrated in their press conference how, after seven months, their next-gen console will further prove that it is the most powerful console in the market. They assured gamers that their company understands the customer's demands; hence they are providing players with a network model that will integrate 360, PC, and mobile phone games.
Nintendo, on the other hand, has put on a wonderful presentation that showcased their Wii and its 'revolutionary' WiiMote. Despite the new controller technology they are bringing to the next-gen console war, they revealed that they do not intend to change the gaming landscape. Instead, with the Wii, Ninty wants to expand the landscape to new and uncharted territories.
Of the three console companies, only Nintendo understands that the demographics of today's gamers are the working class – they want a quality system with quality games and provides a touch of retro gaming for nostalgia. Gamers want their hard-earned money spent on an all-around console.
This is where Sony might lose their hold of the market. As Sony revealed in their pre-E3 conference, their PlayStation3 will sell for around $499-$599. Sure, the features are enticing – Blu-ray, powerful cell processor, and a controller they dubbed as a 'fantastic innovation' – but gamers might just get turned off with the price tag.
Although all consoles offer high-quality graphics, Sony can boast of having a system almost two times more powerful than the only next-gen console in the market. But the war is not about the most powerful console. It has always been – and will always be – about fun.
Seems like Sony is making the same mistake Atari and Sega made in their own console war strategy: forcing the gamers to accept a hardware for the future when they are not yet ready for it. Cases in point: Atari Jaguar with its '64-bit' technology and Sega-CD with its 3DO system. They tried to introduce a technology to the market before it was in demand (in the US, anyway).
The fact that technology changes so fast is understood by a lot of gamers. And this is the reason why they seem to prefer “plug-and-play” upgradeability – as proven by Mac and PC's. This is why Microsoft just might have a bit of an edge by building a console that can be upgraded to match that of the premium system.
As has already been said, the console that will attract the largest user-base (of hardcore gamers, fanboys, casual gamers, and trend followers) is the console that promises a more enjoyable experience. Next-gen does not necessarily mean horse power. The video game industry is still an entertainment industry. And so the most important factor will remain the enjoyment that the console and its games offer. At the end of it all, the gamers will decide which console achieves this goal.
Let the next-gen wars begin...

someone has just believed all of sonys lies. The cpu has a slight advantage over the 360, but the 360 xenos gpu is better than the rsx. So there both similiar in terms of power. Twice as powerful is total BS.

The Wii also looks like a more competitive console now.
Last generation it was a competition between Xbox and Gamecube. We'll see how it turns out this time.
(Amount of sales worldwide)
Gamecube: 20 Million
Xbox: 24 Million
PlayStation 2: 100 Million

I'll admit, I'm Sony-Biases, but I know what is good and what isn't. In my opinion for people with that much money, and fail to know what to get...build a powerhouse PC, you can't go wrong there.

also, I think as far as the console wars go for this generation, I'd expect to see a decent spike in Nintendo's numbers as their console seems to be picking up more and more interest stateside (unfortunately, Microsoft doesn't seem like it will eveer make it in Japan)

If that was true the Cube would have won the last one. Its about marketing, nothing more.

Sony have always been harder to code, PS3 being easier than the PS2 as they bought in a load of coding tools etc. The first wave of games for PS3 will be average, as soon as they learn how to code for it properly the hardware will be being used to it's maximum.
The price is everyone's huge sticking point, but otherwise the Value of the PS3 is actually quite good considering. I don't care if the 360 has better graphics that the PS3, I know that the PS3 will be coded to give it's maximum and the developers have freedom to do what they like, whereas M$ force them to use their LIVE system.
I have had plenty of fun with my PSX and PS2 and see very little reason at looking elsewhere. I love GT4, SSX, Final Fantasy and Motorstorm looks like it will be good and so many other games.
I may be a Sony fanboy, but I enjoy it. If you like Nintendo, if you like 360 then all I have to say is:
ENJOY YOUR GAMING!

What has Peter Moore said about the console itself all ive seen him have a go at is PS3's pricing and the lack of content shown at E3.
Phil Harrison had a go at microsofts stratedgy in releasing the core and premium systems and then playstaton does the same. Sony and microsoft just critisize each other on what they've each said.
Its the fanboys that are whining about the PS3 or convincing themselves its the greatest thing ever.

"blu-ray will fail.. cell processor not performing as well as sony had hoped..." They are just roumors..made by box 360
fangays."
"blu ray will fail" actually was done by in a national news report, not by some even in the gaming community.
and the cell not performing like sony had hyped it was done by a few companies that do benchmarks on hardware.
and to the fangays comment, way to show your maturity...sigh

i myself wont be getting a PS3, atleast for awhile, i went through 3 PS2's from their constant breaking, after the 3rd one, i just gave up and tossed it after it broke and dident buy another one.
i have had friends who have also gone through 3. of the 15 people i know who have PS2's, all together we have gone through a total of 41 PS2's
41!!!! thats 2.7PS2's average across 15 people. (one guy had been through 5, the lowest one was just a single PS2, and it was having DRE's occasionally)
its no longer a question of the games on the PS3, its a matter of price. i CANNOT affoard to spend $1800 on this console just because it breaks alot. i could spend money on the Wii or 360 who have much better numbers when it comes to durability.

I will post the Pros and Cons for each machine in a seperate comment.

Pros
+ The CPU will allow an amazing amount of Physics and other simultaneous processing that has never been seen before. Yes it's better than the 360 CPU - see PS3 spec article on GAMESPOT.
+ It's GPU is actually better than the 360 (see the specs) but not by much. The reason some multiplatform developers say that 360 has an advantage in the GPU department is because it Support DirectX 9 a library that is very mature and supported by Microsoft.
+ Brand name. Playstation is synonymous with gaming in today's world. They have done a great job at supporting their systems. The PS1 just recently stopped being manufactured. PS2 is better supported even now than any other system and it is older than both the XBOX and gamecube which were pretty much abandoned.
+ Good relationships with third parties. Just look at the amount of games already in the works. It's unprecedented. Their PSP alone is getting close to 200 titles by the end of year!
+ The most amount of critically acclaimed exclusives out of the three. FFIII and MGS4 can single handedly sell the system.
+ The best controller on the market made better and with a new sensing feature. (you can argue that 360's controller might be the best now but is pretty close)
Cons:
- price
- Leader - being the leader gains you a lot of hate from the competition. Believe it or not for those saying that it wasn't MS starting all the negative PS3 rumors, most of the rumors came from MS employees (especially Moore). Search this blog or any other for details.
- Hard time keeping expectations. Hard to keep the Video quality
- Introducing their controller now made people blame them for stealing Nintendo's idea.
Reply
+ Early entry point. There is high demand in the West for new hardware and MS is reaping the benefits.
+ FPS heaven!
+ Supports DirectX, the leading library in the PC world which means more DX PC (Halflife anyone?) game ports
+ Best multiplayer environment hands down. (this advantage might go away once the new consoles are released)
+ MS has a lot of power in US media companies. It allows for better marketing and allows them have sites report negatively on their competition.
+ MS has money to burn, Gaming is the biggest reason people buy Windows over OSX or Linux so they cannot afford to allow Linux/OpenGL to gain mindshare.
Cons
- They have a lot of haters. Again they are leaders but in another industry but still carry this hate
- MS Has lost a lot of money on the XBox they can't afford to lose 2 more generations.
- Besides FPS like titles there is not much depth in the system.
- Bad history. MS completely abandoned the Xbox early and disappointed a lot of fans.
- 360 and PS2 sold about the same amount last month in the west and PS2 dominated it in Japan. Sony is still beating MS without launching anything new.
Reply
+ Innovation that many long time gamers are yearning for
+ Classic games that continue to break boundaries.
+ Top notch Franchises like Metroid, Mario, Zelda.
+ Price
+ Since the graphics wont get better the price for game development will increase like it has on 360.
+ look vibe on the internet about them. People feel bad for Nintendo and want them to succeed.
+ MS and Sony dont see them as in the same market and therefore the Wii could easily sneak in for the lead.
Cons
- The Kiddy image is not going away anytime soon (I am not saying it's a kiddy machine just saying that it's image)
- The best games for the Wii are are First party. No great exclusive third party games.
- Graphics are not emphasized so the they look poor (look at that sports title yuk).
- To most people it doesn't feel next gen.
- They are banking on the success of the DS. DS might be great but it's a handheld and a different market.
- DS is losing a lot of ground to the PSP in the west. They are almost tied and the DS had a 6 month lead.

Thats right folks!! ME!! Wanna know why?!! Well, heres my reasons....
1) I will simply just BUY all 3 consoles and ENJOY ALL OF THEM!! makes it easier for me to pick a side...ALL OF EM!! (wink)
2) I went ahead and bought like 10 reserve tickets at gamestop.'s, gamecrazy....and im gonna sell 9 of em for like $200-$300 dollars each at launch day...(targeting the rich and lazy people that dont wanna wait in line overnight just to buy the system.) Thats how i got my 360!! (wink)
3) the best part of all? is to sit back, relax, and enjoy u FOOLISH FANBOYS!! That SWEAR the company that u represent cares about YOU or your OPINIONS!!
Unless you actualy WORK for the company or somehow are EMPLOYED by them, I suggest you put your " I LOVE (insert console here)" poster, T-shirt, underwear or whatever sick infatuation u have for that console away!! cause you are making fools out of yourselves!!
PEACE OUT!!

and the main reason ps2's are selling better???? are because they are cheaper than the xbox. guess what, when the ps3 comes out 200 dollars more than the xbox, all those poor japanese kids wont be able afford it, so there goes 60% of ps3's sales.... the gba is still selling very very nicely (still above psp) because it is the CHEAPEST handheld, as you can recall the psp is the fastest best handheld on the market but it is so damn expensive no japanese kid wants it. and Sony failed me once with a psp, i wont let them do it to me again.

So now I will buy they PS3 (have alredy saved $$$ for it) and mabye one year after I will be they Wii.
So what I am tireing to say it that what you learn to play on or get very happy whit on one generation is they one you will stick till till you get a bad experiens whit that comany that is offen so when you bay something even food it can by like that. But ofcurse there is they ones that whan't they one whit lowes price tag and they one thay whants they one whit the best power or highes price tag. But I am sure there is many more reson to way someboddy buy just that consoles.

Nintendo aims at kids - All there games are bright and colourful and completely boring for those who want a more complex game. But i dont dislike the new style of controller, i think its a brilliant idea and will push it ahead of the 360.
Sony takes risks - They try a new style of disk which will bring ahole lot of money to sony. They have a controller which takes just part of what nintendo are bringing to the table and just using part of it. And using a system like XBOXLive so xbox has to advantage. etc.

Umm...both? Every used a computer before? Notice how they support almost e-v-e-r-y device out there. Oh, and ever heard of linux or mac os x? The are called o-p-e-r-a-t-i-n-g s-y-s-t-e-m-s....Sorry, just have to spell it out for you because you obviously just learned to read.
Notice how Sony just announced the Blu-ray Vaio laptop? I wonder what VAIO owners will do, when they find out that they can't upgrade to Vista, because MS suddenly dropped support for the new BD format? Hmmm...?? Nothing! Because it's friggin supported! ......Jeeeeesus people that age can be extremely stupid...Why god! Why!
...Oh, and about this article. It's full of mights, seems and maybe's, just like it should. It's speculation people! Live with it! We will not know anything for sure, until PS3 and Wii are released to the public.
All we know that the Xbox360 is out. It sells pretty good (except here in Japan) and we can say what it really is. A pretty good machine, but I'll still wait for the PS3. There's just a bit more to it. Don't get me wrong, you can buy any console you like, but mine just happens to be PS3....Aaaand after a while i'll get Wii.
Thanks for the Pros and Cons TheProfessor. Nicely and maturely put together.
