LED mods for the Wii: Pulse VU

This is sweet stuff. The guys over at SICKmods decided to make a nifty little chip to make your Nintendo Wii's LED a lot flashier.

The Pulse VU basically makes your Wii's pretty blue lights react to sounds being played in games. It also makes it pulse during periods of inactivity. The Pulse VU doesn't affect the Wii's functions, and gives way to the actual system when the Wii itself intends to use it. They're also planning on releasing similar modifications for Microsoft's 360 and Sony's PS3.

Now, since this is an open-source project, they'll be releasing the schematics and source code of this modification soon, but they're also selling the actual mod so interested gamers don't have to build one from scratch. In the meantime, watch the video below to see what it can do. Enjoy!

That's really cool. That might get distracting on games like Twilight Princess though :(, since you always want to concentrate on the TV and i'd probably stare at the Wii for hours on end.

The whole audio sync thing would get on my nerves. Actually, the fading while the console is in standby would get on my nerves as well.

What would have been even cooler though is if it constantly changed between colors. It would be just as distracting, but better than a strip of flashing/dimming light.

Never change a running design.

Why do you people always ***** ***** up by adding fancy lighting or change the existing lighting to other colors?

Well, I think it's genius. I was a little pissed when I first turned my console on and no blue light showed up. I got over it within a few seconds, but this looks really cool. Besides, if it's too distracting, I can always turn it off.

I don't like the idea of opening it up and voiding my warantee, though. If it's not a f-ware update, than I'd rather leave it alone.

The word 'pointless' comes to mind! Who wants to look at their flashing console whilst trying to play games?
