Codename Revolution looks at the similarities and differences between the Wii launch and the Gamecube launch. For those who are still skeptical it can prove to be a useful tool to see if the Wii will go the way of the Gamecube.

10 Similarities:
  1. Gamecube and Wii launched last!
  2. Gamecube and Wii have no DVD Player
  3. Both systems had no Mario at launch
  4. Big exclusive third-party game for Cube was Rogue Leader, Red Steel for Wii
  5. No online gameplay titles at launch
  6. Both systems are built from the same architecture
  7. Both systems had huge support going into launch
  8. Both systems were designed with a "family-friendly" approach
  9. Gamecube launched beside Xbox, Wii launched beside PS3
  10. Both systems were sold at a profit for Nintendo
Here are the 10 differences:
  1. Backwards Compatibility
  2. Wii had at least a 90% sellout rate on launch day in North America, Gamecube had only a 42% sellout rate on launch day.
  3. Wii was released in North America first
  4. Wii had a bundled game (Wii Sports) and had a higher price tag
  5. GamecubeÂ’s big first-party game was Luigi's Mansion, while Wii's had a massive game in the likes of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
  6. Wii is launched with a brand new control mechanism
  7. Gamecube was directly competing with Microsoft and Sony, Wii is indirectly competing with the rest
  8. Wii delivered an online service (without gameplay) on day one
  9. Wii has the backing of a different management team from Reggie Fils-Aime to Satoru Iwata
  10. Wii has the backing power of the Nintendo DS, while Gamecube was launched in the same year as the Game Boy Advance.
Will the Wii redeem the Gamecube? Your wallets will decide.

"Gamecube launched beside Xbox, Wii launched beside PS3" this is not a similarity the way it's worded. If you were to say that they both launched within close windows of other consoles, then that's make sense.

"Big exclusive third-party game for Cube was Rogue Leader, Red Steel for Wii" ... again, same idea, it's not a difference the way it's listed.

The Wii is basically a Gamecube with a new controller. The gamecube didnt succeed before so what makes anyone think a new controller can save it now? It will have the same fate as the GC.

thats where you are wrong. the wii has huge support going for it. obviously when i system has a 90% sellout rate it will surely be successful. people want it, people are buying it. plain and simple. its the same principle as the DS. look at how the DS is doing. You'll all see soon enough.

"Gamecube and Wii have no DVD Player" The new Wii next year will have a DVD player, Gamecube never did. Plus who doesn't have a DVD player? it's going to be a dead format soon enough.

"No online gameplay titles at launch" Doesnt mean anything since Wii actually has online capability and Gamecube didn't.

"Both systems were sold at a profit for Nintendo" No sh*t Sherlock, that really shouldn't even be on the list, thats like saying Wii and Gamecube are both video game consoles.

You also have to consider how long the Wii will appeal to everyone and if the Wii won't turn out to be a gimmick. To me the Wii doesn't have the type of games to last very long in the eyes of comsumers. I don't see it leading the market in 1 to 2 years time. However, we'll just have to wait and see.
