LA Times: Can Wii prolong winning streak? |
Ó
While Nintendo is dominating sales across the board, some people still believe that the Wii won't be be able to keep up with other next-gen consoles. They say that the Wii's graphics will be outdated in a couple of years from now, contrary to expected long life for its competitors. In a recent Los Angeles Times article, Alex Pham discussed about the Wii and its predicted future.
The target audience of the Wii is the casual gamer who wants something to plug-in and play. Along with innovative controls and quirky games, people have been joining the trend of waving that Wiimote around. Some say that this is just a fad, and Wii won't be able to keep up with PS3 and Xbox 360.
On the software side, it's less likely for the Wii to lose third party support. Making games on the console would take $US 1-7 million and less than a year's time, while PS3 and Xbox 360 games can cost more than $20 million to make in more than a year's time. It doesn't help that coding games on these platforms is quite difficult that even Final Fantasy's creator complained about it.
"It wouldn't be surprising to see [people] lose interest after a relatively short amount of time," Pham quoted analyst Van Baker from Garnet Inc. Other people are still positive about it though, like managing director of Sherman Oaks, who was quoted as saying, "We don't see [the Wii] fading."

Right now, Wii is so much in demand but short of supply. I hear people complaining they can't get hold of one because the stores in their areas always ran out of stock. I can't see Wii fading at the moment. In fact, it is still soaring to the top.

Instead of chosing progress and technical achivements lazy developers whould always prefer cheap and easy games because they sell a ton and cost far less than games like Killzone 2, Halo 3 etc...
Its really sad that instead of moving forward we are actually forced to go backwords...The Wii is the a greate achivement at the same time being the epitomy of progress halt.
The goog thing is that, yes ..devepolers that are willing to break through this Wii-effect, like Crytek which are making the most advanced game ever Crysis, still exist and offer something trully fantastic.
If we start thinking that way... the Wii way... then why bother devepoping dual core processors and quad core and crazy GPU units and all that, when we can take our old pentium 1 from the basment blow the dust get rid of the mice and play 8-bit games on it and have fun like with the wii(I am not saying that the wii has 8-bit graphics but in contrast with the most titles of the ps3 and 360 is like 8-bit...).
I am not bashing the Wii here I am just stating my point of view regarding gaming future development.
