Konami: no console will dominate next-gen market

Konami no next gen dominate - Image 1Quite a few members of the gaming industry have been waiting for either the Sony PlayStation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, or the Nintendo Wii to pull away from the competition and be declared the dominant force for this generation. Game developer and publisher Konami has given word that this will not be happening.

The company said that they don't see any next-generation console dominating the market like the PlayStation 2 did in the last generation. If you'd care to recall, the PlayStation 2 sold over 120 million consoles, leaving its main competitors the Xbox and GameCube behind.

According to Konami, a system that will appeal to all gamers is no longer possible and that the popularity of a console will ultimately depend on which platform best caters to user preferences in a region or country:

Previously, a single home gaming platform [PS2] was the market leader worldwide, but that pattern has changed. Whichever platform best caters to users' preferences in a particular country or region, in terms of the games available to be played on it, is now the one that will dominate the local market.

If Konami's right, then perhaps analysts and market movers should start considering which platforms will dominate in which areas. In addition, it might be interesting to see how the different consoles battle it out to gain dominance of the more profitable regions in North America, Europe, Australia, and Japan.

» I agree with this

It's true... X Box 360 appeals to FPS fans, PS3 is for well rounded gamers(prefer a bit of everything) while Wii is targeted towards the kiddies with Princess Barbie and the cool Super Mario Galaxies... My PS3 and PC provide me with all the gaming i need... Don't take this the wrong way but when a game comes out for X Box 360 it will eventually come to pc (Bioshock, Overlord etc)... So i never see the need to fork out extra cash on a 360... Well in the end it;s the games that are most important!!!

» uh huh

Seriously! Lame comments aside, I can't help but think that Konami just doesn't want to choose sides because it put it's "Great" game (MGS4) on a system that isn't selling well.

I%u2019m willing to bet if the PS3 was outselling all the other consoles Konami would say differently.

by Ninjiz - 2007-11-14 04:38
» huh?

360 caters to FPS fans??

What are you talking about?

PS3 has them too.

And out of the 20 games I have for 360 only 2 are FPS...

So where do you get your info?

» in a way, true

Last generation, all 3 systems were very similar so the PS2, being first (other than the Dreamcast,) was most popular.

Since the systems are pretty different (as is the price) this round, the odds are more even.

The XBOX 360 and PS3 are for true gamers that expect only the best graphics, sound, and game selection. Also these systems have the only real online play and have expanded to do much more than play games such as movies, photos, internet, remote connectivity, linux, etc.

The Wii is for morons that can't figure out how to use a controller with more than 2 buttons or one analog stick (even though most games require a tutorial anyway.) Also it's good for mindless minigames, half assed last gen ports, and unoriginal mario games. Thinking.... what else is it good for? Ummm...... A little help here?

by Billie - 2007-11-14 06:50
» dude

Yet again you managed to give your opinion of the article which was good, then completely destroyed it with your lame "hater" comments.

As for the "Unoriginal Mario games", have you played Galaxy? It is the most original Mario game I have played in over 10 years, and this game could not be as fun if it did have 2 analog sticks or 6 buttons.

Assuming that the Wii is for "morons", and only contains "minigames" just proves how ignorant you are. Everybody else could equally say "XBOX only has FPS, PS3 is only a Blue Ray player", but these comments are equally stupid. Just play your games and have fun, and stop trying to ruin everybody else's.

by Mister Commune Ist - 2007-11-14 07:03
» I agree

The XBox is the ONLY system out there for the traditional "fanboy gamer": The one who sits in his room alone, picking at his pimples and playing video games online, ruining XBOX Live for everyone else by being a childish douchebag (see poster above me).

PS3 is the cheapest Betamax II player on the market right now! It also has some mediocre games, I guess. But Sony doesn't really care about that *****, they just want to make sure they win in the HD format war. Plus, it's the biggest f@(king waste of money since the Jaguar system (Which had twelve buttons! Clearly more buttons equals better gameplay!) Glad I bought one of these!

I'll help you out with what the Wii is good for "Mr. Common Sense": The Wii is good for helping those of us who have gone through puberty relive some of the greatest games of the past. I grew up with games like Contra and Super Mario Bros 1-3, and the Sonic the Hedgehog series and I still like to play them now. The virtual console was a very big reason for buying a Wii for me and about 6 of my friends. You won't understand until you go to college, I'm sure, but try to keep in mind: Just like the popular kids in your school, not everything that's cool involves you. Sorry you're on the outside.

» nice try billie

We all know you're the only one that defends the Wii. Everyone else realizes the Wii has no long term appeal and no interest for serious gamers.

Virtual console games are a ripoff. I have many classic consoles that I actually owned since new (I am much older than 12 after all), and I can buy the original games used for less than the Wii versions. To me, an ORIGINAL game played on original hardware is much better than a emulated copy played on a near useless system with one worthwhile game. That's only if I don't want to play them for free on the PC or PSP. But you're right, it's better to give that money to Nintendo since they need it.

Speaking of which, shouldn't NEWER games be more of a draw? I know Red Steel, Mario and Sonic Olympics, Wii Sports, Naruto, Fire Emblem, Need for Speed Prostreet, Carnival Games, EA Playground, Mario Party, Wii Play, Cooking Mama, Tony Hawk Proving Ground, Boogie, NBA Live 08, Pokemon Battle Revolution, Donky Kong Barrel Blast, (the list goes on and on!) all got poor reviews according to Gamespot, but we all know you think they're fun!

The Wii is bad, but it will get better. Ooh look you can now give virtual console games as gifts (to people that don't want something with real value.) You can also get Wii Fit as an excuse to get excersice, when nothing it does takes the place of exercises you can do WITHOUT it. A new DVD player feature is coming as well (no dolby digital sound) but only to new consoles, since Nintendo never thought they would need one for some reason. You can also set your own photo as the photo channel icon and view in in glorious 480p resolution with non included cables! New firmware takes away features like mp3 support, why?

Nintendo can sell consoles no matter what they do! They are so pathetic and lazy as a game company, It's baffling how they are still sold out.

If you just look at the post above you, you can see that I am not the only one defending the Wii. I like to stick up for true gamers, gamers who love all kinds of games (Casual, Hardcore), and by completely eliminating the Wii from your choice of gaming shows that you are no real gamer.

Also, strictly basing a games value on somebody else%u2019s opinion is completely ludicrous. That is like buying one brand of beer because your neighbor says that it%u2019s the best while completely ignoring other possibilities. I mean what happens if your neighbor who is supposed to be this %u201Cgreat beverage taster%u201D, tells you to buy Zima? Is it possible that you think the Wii is %u201Cbad%u201D because somebody else said it first? If this is the attitude that you think all gamers have, this means that gamers are just robots that follow whatever %u201CIGN%u201D, %u201CGamespot%u201D, or %u201CEGM Magazine%u201D tells you to buy. I definitely know people who follow game ratings religiously, but by doing this is like denying yourself the chance to say if a game %u201Csucks%u201D or is %u201Cgreat%u201D, because somebody already did it for you. For the record, about 5 of the games that you listed were not fun to me, but could definitely be fun for others.

While I believe that the new iphoto update that eliminates mp3 is lame, we can%u2019t expect every console to be completely perfect. It could take me more than my fingers and toes to count all the mistakes found on other consoles, but ultimately what%u2019s the point? The VC giving option I think is great, it is a way to give my nephew Super Metroid after he asked me the other day, %u201CWhat%u2019s a Metroid?%u201D. And like I said in another post, why are you still crying about the lack of DVD playback in the Wii? Do you only have Betamax or something?

So dude, go read a book, or play a instrument. Shoot! Try to publish a book describing how "bad" the Wii is. Just do something more constructive then sitting here annoying all of us.

Hey I would defend the Wii too but it's kind of pointless to argue with you. I always thought hardcore gamer are those who are willing to try or play any types of video game on the market, even if it's just some kiddie games or mini-game on the Wii. And one more thing, the Wii is as much fun as a 360 or a PS3.

by Ira Z. - 2007-11-14 13:13
» I hear you

Your right. Developers will just keep on making new consoles that are more expensive each time. But, at the end of the day, it's still about the games.

Thanks for keeping it real dude

» The wii

I think the wii has SOME good games, but I know like hell you cant say its better than a PS3 or 360. I'd buy metriod, and supersmash when that comes out but thats about all I see (that I would want). Im not about to get the rayman rabbit game or somthing like that lol..

The PS3 is my system only because it has the games I like on it, Metal gear solid being my favorite series (its what got me INTO gaming.)

Ay Mister Common Sense you play online with your ps3?

by Apeman - 2007-11-14 14:43
» I Very Well Agree

Really and truely, MCS is absolutely right. the X360 and PS3 are the ONLY home consoles that deserve to be on store shelves. The wii is just the gamecube that has a wireless controller and slapped on a new casing. now don't come beechin sayin that its the games that matter, well hey, guess what. nintendo is just pulling the old games outta their asses and updating them with a coupla new graphics and features and BAM! they sell you pretty much the same game for ANOTHER what, 50 bucks? hey, you might complain about our games bein 60, but at least they're original and have good quality

by Shatterdome - 2007-11-14 20:59
» There is nothing wrong with wii...

Not sure why there is all the hate towards wii.

Nintendo clearly went a different direction...so saying it's just a rehashed gamecube with motion sensors is inncorrect......it's a rehashed xbox with motion sensors.

Still...like the DS is opens helluvalot of opportunities for new gameplay....hell i'd buy it just for the gun comming out and zelda cross bow trainer.

It's so damn cheap it's not a loss to buy it for only 1 or 2 real games, all the oldschool nes/snes/n64 games and the random stuff that come with the "dashboard"

Now that it's on store shelves (for now...xmas is comming...so hopefully in feb) when I have $300 extra, i'll definately throw down for a wii.

Not to mention, chicks dig playing with the Wii much more then the 360/PS3....unless you like to play with sausage all the time....

» good article

Regardless of sentiments games are games which can be for fun or education but essential to all is "Entertainment" If the games are played on a box of electronics then by definition it is a console game.

Each console has its market and the developers realise this hence the validity of the statement is correct.

The high end console fans for MS or Sony should support developments like the Wii as this is for younger users in general but it is the breeding ground for the future gamers. The more gamers there are regardless of console choice the bigger the market. The bigger the market becomes the higher the amount of financial resources are poured into it to ensure market share. This leads to better development and better games.

If we as high end gamers feel that we are the elite and the rest is for monkeys then should the monkeys win the market share then we will need to reconsider the value of bananas.

by Mister Commune Ist - 2007-11-15 03:41
» Bully

Fanboys (12-17 years old) hate the Wii because it reminds them of everything they arent: Popular with the girls, liked by the masses, successful, wealthy, etc.

I think most of the people who hate the Wii have some kind of inferiority complex. There is no real reason to hate an effing video game box of any kind. Fanboys think about this: You are on the internet, *****ing about a box that plays videogames, and arguing about which one is the best. That's the definition of pathetic.

by Billie - 2007-11-15 04:06
» Awesome

Great response dude. While I disagree that the Wii is geared toward "younger users", you bring up an excellent point. Gamers shouldn't act like an elite group, because it just keeps the market in one direction. I like Gears of War, I like Metal Gear Solid, and I like Super Mario!

by Billie - 2007-11-15 04:17
» To ApeMan

This information does not help out the argument. I could easily say that the PS3 is just a BlueRay player, the XBOX360 is just a PC with wireless analog controls, so they don't deserver to be on the store shelves as consoles. These are also "garbage" comments.

When you said that "Nintendo is JUST pulling old games...." is just as pointless as saying that the PS3 has no game library and the XBOX just has FPS, which is also completely false. While you focus on hating all the "ports" that the Wii has you are ignoring some of the gems that are exclusive to the Wii itself. But with the "hate Wii" mentality obviously showing on these message boards, I can tell that you will not allow yourself to try them out which is sad. There is a whole world of gaming out there, do yourself a favor and try not to pigeonhole yourself into one niche market. You will have a lot more fun, trust me.

People assume that Halo and Gears are the only games on the 360.

by shabghai360 - 2007-11-15 11:18
» Re Billie

Point taken, there are older players on the Wii but my statement for younger users was more as a result of the recent releases for consoles which are often for older users due to the high number of games with an M rating.

The Wii is also more suitable for families with younger children. Children tend to be more active and the movement aspect is a real bonus for them.

It is wrong to relate a game with high end graphics as Bioshock to the Wii experience as one is not better than the other. Its like saying Action films are the best and woman should stop watching Sob films and grow up to be men!

I do not have Wii But my neighbours kids do and they love it. The xbox which I own they find fascinating but not to their taste.

by Billie - 2007-11-16 03:40
» definitions

Well again this is completely relative to what your definition of an "older" user is. Nintendo specifically stated that they wanted to attrach and "older" audience (Ones that have never picked up a controller) because the youth in Japan is at a decline. There are more elderly people there, and they didn't want to ignore that market share. To be honest, my friends and I grew up playing more mature rated titles when we were 13-17, then now in our late 20's

by shabghai360 - 2007-11-16 04:28
» definitions

True but here in China the appeal is really the younger people as its fun. the turn based play etc is more prevalent here as many like to share in a game. The split screen as utilized for Halo etc is not what they want as they like to compete against each other. This of course may not be proof of a consoles direction.

Anyways this is getting off topic but the fact agreed upon is that the Wii is a gaming console and should not be relegated as Crap just because others feel elitist.
