John Romero: PS3 and Xbox 360 to go away, will be replaced by "PC-like" platform

Daikatana - Image 1John Romero, co-creator of Doom, and made infamous because of his baby, Daikatana, recently got questioned by the relaunched Adrenaline Vault about his current plans when it come to gaming.

Aside form the revelation that he's currently working on a PC MMORPG that he says should be the first of its kind, he had several interesting to say about console games.

Romero says that he believes that consoles as they are at the moment have to undergo a "re-thinking" of sorts in light of dropping processor prices. He expounds:

My prediction is that the game console in the vein of the PS3 and XBOX 360 is going to either undergo a massive rethink or go away altogether. The Wii has the perfect design for a console that doesn't pretend to be a PC and is geared more toward casual gamers than hardcore gamers. The hardcore gamers are going to either be playing on their PCs or a new PC-like platform that sits in the living room but still serves the whole house over wifi, even the video signal.

Hmm... Romero says that the PS3 and the Xbox 360 will go away to make way for a PC like platform that sits in the living room, that serves the whole house over a wireless network. Well, what exactly IS a "PC-like" platform?

We feel that one could safely say that Sony's PlayStation 3 and Microsoft's Xbox 360 are high powered PC like platforms that enable users to not only play games but to act as a living room solution, and that both companies are trying to enable their products to better serve the media needs of the household.

So if the high-end consoles of today are already moving in the direction of evolving into a "PC-like" platform, how exactly are they "going away altogether" again?

Perhaps what mister Romero tried to say is that the nature of console gaming is bound to change. ...but that's just us trying hard.

"The hardcore gamers are going to either be playing on their PCs or a new PC-like platform"

Uhh... Like the writer of the article (Ian C) say's, if he thinks consoles will be replaced by a "PC-Like Platform", he more or less say's the PS3 and 360 "Pretend to be like PC's. So, he thinks PS3 and 360 will be replaced by what, PS3 and 360?

the average gamer doesn't want to upgrade their pc every 6 months. They just want to buy the system, buy the games, and go play. So far that's the exact opposite of pc gaming.

but if i'd have no other options but PS Games then i think it's time to move on from gaming... the experience and enjoyment i have in playing my favorites game on my console can never be replicated by a PC...

I think pc gaming is bull***** because you have to buy a new system or upgrade every couple months just to play a new game with a console you can just play the dam thing!!!

Sorry Mr. Romero, but in the eyes of most people, $400-$600 console + being able to play any of the console's games for the next six years > $2500 PC that you have to upgrade every three months to get decent performance from the newest and most taxing games. It's just common sense, consoles are going nowhere

This guy may be right, I mean for the last 3 years, I've had a pc as my home theater system. My dad built a computer that can channel and record tv that comes from the satelite receiver just like a PVR. But this is a full PC that runs windows xp home so it can play all media types and we can play games on it with the TV. But my TV is a scetchy rear projection that doesn't allow many resolutions, so its hard to play games on it.

The point is that such a machine is possible and can happen for many people like me. All I need it a better TV alongside a few computer upgrades and I will be doing all the PC gaming on my TV.

thats my two cents

ANYONE WHO SAYS PC GAMING REQUIRES UPGRADES EVERYMONTH MUST BE A TOTAL TOOL WHEN IT COMES TO THIER MONEY.

It dosent take a genious to make a $600 USD PC that KILLS a 360 and PS3.

And PC has the best range, rating, and most varied titles.

Not to mention mods, and the best Online; by far.

Oh and all that other 'PC stuff'.

note* I may be a PC gaming preacher, but I own ALL the last gen consoles and a 360. I plan to buy a PS3.

OK then, explain how to make a $600 PC that "KILLS" a 360 or PS3. Didn't think you could.

For the average consumer (see: the ones who don't get a discount) a graphics card and CPU comparable to those found in the 360 cost more than the 360 by themselves. Forget about the PS3, there is no CPU on the market comparable to the Cell at its best, not even a quad-core, and those cost upwards of $800 alone.

Seriously, guy's this is comming from Romero, the guy is famous for making the most stupid comments all the time...

Sure he co-created Doom, but he left I.D. to go do his own thing.... so far, the only things his produced is utter-trash.

I wouldn't take anything said by Romero seriously.

That's funny about PCs replacing consoles... I just bought Oblivion for my PS3 instead of my PC because I only have a 6600GT and didn't want lower resolution.

Now, if they made games for my PS3 that uses a keyboard and mouse FPS, then my PC just might become a work machine instead of a gaming machine (though I love the low prices of games at Target on clearance :))

I spent around 1500 $ not counting the speakers keyboard and monitor on a pc that I built my self, cheapest way to go. It was kick ass for about 6 months. Then I had to turn down the settings again, a little bit later the xbox 360 came out and I just bought one, its awsome for 400$ I can play any game out for it and know that Im getting a game made for it. I dont care if other games look better than the games for it. If all the games look as good as gears of war, Ill be happy and I know they will get better. No matter how much better the pc games look because they have so much power some console games will rise above. Take resident evil 4, and zelda twilight princess. both of those games are made for a *****ing gamecube. enough said

The Wii sucks, it's all about 360/PS3. It's all about the advance physics/graphics not some gimmicky controller in which te novalty wears off in a couple months. Within a year, the developpers will have have done everything that is possible with the Wii, and the controller will be old news. With the REAL next gen consoles, there can always be inprovements. Take god of war 2 for example, the ps2 is like 7 years old and they can still make good games for it. I usto be a PC gamer when i bought my new computer. Unfortunately, it was Obsolete in like 6 months. It is because of that, that pc gaming blows. It is next to impossible to ge a new game running at a stead frame rate on PC without dropping your wallet. At least on next gen platforms, they games are made to run stedialy on the console.

How can a 600$ PC kill 360 and PS3. Your an imbossel for thinking that. What the hell does PC have coming out for games in the following months?? Pc also has quality titles such as Big Rigs and Extreme Paint Brawl averaging a rating of .5/10 between the two of them.

P.S give ur $600 pc 6 months, and u will have to upgrade.....

Viruses viruses viruses viruses viruses do i need to say more.

If anyone here knows where you can buy the cell processor or better RSX or better, built in bluetooth, wifi, sixAxis wireless controller, built in multimedia, game console,

blu-ray or and hd-dvd

no only that but all 1st 2nd party games made for the ps3 or xbox 360 are optimed to the make to get the best results or 3rd party games made to work.

Never having to worry about upgrading and buying a new "game consoles+"

AND its only for £425~ And the consoles are getting better.

Well maybe the xbox 360 if microsoft keep porting games over to the pc it might become "replaced"

I'd rather have a real PC based gaming platform than a POS3 that tries to be a PC. The at least I could get some decent software support.
