Japanese Retailers Listing Wii at 18,000 Yen |
Listed in: Wii Tags: Japan

First, don't get your hopes up. It's completely possible that these retailers made a mistake. However, if it turns out true, this would mean that Wii would launch at an equivalent of $160 US or €125. Japanese prices include tax so that would probably make it $150 in the US (or in marketing terms, $149.99) and €150 in Europe (because game companies hate Europe).
The story is as follows. PC-Success had the Wii listed at ¥18,000. However, it was later taken down for unknown reasons. Now, Kakaku.Livedoor also has the Wii at ¥18,000. That is pictured above.
When Nintendo gave its press release, it just said it would be below $250 US and ¥25,000. We'll see how things go. If it really is ¥18,000... Sony might be in trouble. Microsoft is screwed in Japan no matter what the price.

I wouldn't mind forking over that much cash for a Wii, 'mote, and a nunchuck alone. Considering it's near half of MS and Sony's consoles. If it turns out It's even cheaper, well that's fantastic.

Plus I want Nintendo to make a good profit. However, if they put it at $150 I guess it could easily make up for the loss in console return with all the game sales.

The thing is... the neither PS3 OR the 360 are $300 (I payed $500 for my Premium 360). Which is why compared to the other systems, the Wii seems cheaper. A WHOLE lot cheaper.
Sure, if this were Fantastical Land and the PS3 were $300 I'd get one off the bat.... but it isn't. It's actually double that.

If they sell lots of consoles they will sell lots of games. Lots of games = lots of money. If they sell fewer conosles then they sell less games. Less games = less money.

Also, we don't know if the Wii will come bundled with something or alone. So assuming that Nintendo will sell the console itself, believed to be worth $99 by an unknown source, is also pure speculation.
As for the "If they sell lots of consoles they will sell lots of games" thing, I agree. However, $250 still looks sweet next to $500 and $600. Which was my point to begin with.
