Iwata: Nintendo already tried, rejected camera-based motion-sensing tech |

While the camera-based motion-sensing tech shown by Sony and Microsoft during E3 definitely impressed a lot of gamers, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had more of a "been there, done that" attitude.
Speaking to the Financial Times, Iwata said that they've actually already made experimental games controlled by camera-based sensors. That tech was eventually rejected, however, since they got better results out of the accelerometer-based tech now used in the Wiimote.
Iwata also seemed to welcome the competition, saying that he was happy that motion controls are starting to become an industry standard. "Companies whose people said that motion-sensing wouldnÂ’t work are now proposing motion sensors," he said.

Motion control via camera has failed in the past and will continue to fail. People (360 fanboys) cry like babies over how much movment the Wiimote creates yet these same babies are happier then shlt to move around EVEN MORE for a camera?
Think about it a little longer and you'll see WHY Nintendo rejected it. They rejected it for the same reason MOST devs reject the eye toy.

He must be directing what he is saying more towards Microsoft. I am quite sure Sony's motion controller does have accelerometers inside of it. One of the key differences is that Sony is using a camera to track the controller instead of the infrared light triangulation of the Wii. The camera allows for some new gameplay mechanics also. The controller is also very responsive and appears far more accurate than a Wiimote.
I could go into more detail about why I think Sony's method will be a better endgame than both Microsoft and Nintendo's, but nah. This is essentially all thanks to Nintendo anyway, they get the ideas rolling.

Another topic on who did it first doesn't really matter. Anyway, just watch South Park episode above. LOL. Anyway, all their accessories and concepts are promising. Let's just wait and see how it goes once it's release. So far the motion sensor that hasn't failed IMHO is the wiimote. It's actually awesome especially that most games that uses it integrates the motion sensing capabilities pretty well, especially their sports titles and others.
All in all it's just that it is innovative and some people were skeptical about it before it was released. Either it was going to be a failure or a winner, and it won. And guess what, people actually welcomed the motion sensing capability of the wii and it's remote.
So, hopefully these new technologies that Microsoft and Sony introduced during E3 won't be a disappointment. Again, let's just wait and see 'til it's launch date or release. Being skeptical is just normal since it's somewhat new or already done but a failed attempt. That is of course disregarding the fanboyisms around here.

Iwata is such a bold-faced liar. Of course the people who think he's a twit know this. The people who bought WiiFit on the other hand would believe a toaster is the future of gaming if this dip***** said so.

I know I wouldn't mind getting this when it actually arrives in stores because I already have the PlayStation Eye (which is the real name for it, not sure why everyone keeps calling it the eyetoy).

the next leap in gaming, will once again be done by nintendo. everyone will call them crazy, only to follow them again shortly after.
nuttin wrong wit being a sony fanboy, or a 360 fanboy. but just remember to show ur respect to nintendo, from the d-pad, to the shoulder buttons, to the thumbstick, to the rumble feature, the list goes on.

I agree that Nintendo has come out with some alright ideas, and will forever be apart of my *childhood*, but as of late, things like the Wii make me laugh my ass off. Seriously, it's fun as a gimmick, but anything more than that and it's a joke.
And knowing Sony and MS, they'll make better technology than what Nintendo has, but people probably won't buy it as much. That's just how it goes.

There's an infrared camera built into the end of each remote controller!!! The sensor bar isn't actually a sensor at all, but a series of 10 infrared LEDs, which the wiimote camera 'sees' and uses to detect movement. Sony's solution is the reverse, with the camera fixed near the TV and lights on the end of the remote which is used to detect movement.
So to summarize, Wii has lights by the TV and a camera in each controller, Sony has a camera by the TV and a light on each controller.
I'm sure a Natal like control scheme is something Nintendo considered before deciding on the Wii remote, but the technology probably wasn't good enough at the time, or it was too expensive, and therefore not practical for a console.

they said that they aren't doing camera control that means its NOT an eye toy at all

The thing that's different for Natal is that it has depth sensing via a IR camera. This is way better than the Eyetoy and allows true tracking of the human body.

In your example alone, MORE THEN 10% of owners own OTHER accessories. That makes it the MOST FAILED. You forgot the comparison part of your comparison.

And you forgot stereo mic. Gees!

the wii does not work even close to Good on a Fast pace game like Zelda, or Action games.
I had a Wii for like 1 week and tested Many games and ALL never worked right and Was close to imposable to play at your full skills because of it.
Now some slow type games like Boomblox or etc Do work (Some what OK) So far the ONLY game they have gotten to work close to 98% is the Wiisports(bowli ng)

10.5 million sales is still a huge number either way, GT1 for PS1 sold about 10 million copies.

Sony/MS only have those who already own the console to market to, i do think the motion tech from Sony/MS looks good but its not going to make anyone buy a PS3/360 purely because of it. Its going to be cool from what i've seen, those who dont have a PS3/360 probably wont care. I mean, i'll probably pick up the new accessories for my consoles but the next person thinking about buying a Wii wont think "oh.. what about 360's new motion thingy?". This isn't going to impact Wii's console sales much.

I'm assuming you've never played RE4: Wii Edition, Dead Rising: CTYD (screw the zombie count, they fixed what I hated about the original), Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Madworld, Disaster: Day of Crisis, House of the Dead: Overkill, or No More Heroes.
If you find any of those games "don't work right", I'm afraid you just suck.

Like I said, PS Eye does NOT do 3D.

Maybe you should try, I don't know, getting your facts right before you say some thing?
And before any one tries to slam me for being a Nintendo fanboy, I'm not, I own an Xbox 360, as well as 2 PSP consoles. I just think if people are going to critisise a company for some thing, they should at least have the correct reasoning to do so (For example Nintendos complete and lack of care for their hardcore fanbase and their refusal to release a decent hard drive solution for the Wii)

Therefore the camara will detect the controller's position up/down and left/right, whilst sonar will detect the controller's distance from the camera.
Regarding Natal, you're right to be skeptical of that promotional video Miclowgunman, as we should of all such videos. However, there were live demonstrations of Natal on stage, and there have been many hands-on reports at E3 from those who tried it for themselves. Hence it does seem to be the 'real deal'.

Got any facts to back up ANY OF THAT. Keyword being ANY.
You just made up ALL of that. You can't even call any of that opinion.

It proved to the world that casual gaming is #1 and now both MS and Sony are killing themselves trying to catch up and add casual to their consoles.

I also like how the motion controlls on the Wii are claimed to be FAILURE and GIMICKY while the motion controlls now for other consoles are the greatest things EVER!!!!

"Why infrared? The eye doesn't see infrared light. And when you combine an infrared camera with an infrared emitter (also part of Natal), a room is flooded with a spectrum of invisible light that works in the dark."
Although someone posted this link as an example of what Natal can be used for, and this is how I'd like to play first person and racing games -

Full body motion control is better for party games with a group of friends. I'd prefer more subtle use of Natal technology, which TrackIR demonstrates. This would be easily possible with Natal.

Nintendo bought a PART from a another company. They did NOT buy the Wiimote from another company.
