Iwata: Nintendo already tried, rejected camera-based motion-sensing tech

Wiimote - Image 1

While the camera-based motion-sensing tech shown by Sony and Microsoft during E3 definitely impressed a lot of gamers, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata had more of a "been there, done that" attitude.

Speaking to the Financial Times, Iwata said that they've actually already made experimental games controlled by camera-based sensors. That tech was eventually rejected, however, since they got better results out of the accelerometer-based tech now used in the Wiimote.

Iwata also seemed to welcome the competition, saying that he was happy that motion controls are starting to become an industry standard. "Companies whose people said that motion-sensing wouldnÂ’t work are now proposing motion sensors," he said.

» What a load of crap

Sony had the eye toy out about 7-8 yrs ago, worked fine, and now by the looks of it they have perfected what nintendo still cant do with the wii motion plus add on. There demo at e3 showed just how accurate it could be. I guess nintendo passed on using that technology because the could not perfect it like sony did? Dont get me wrong i like nintendo but this seems like a load of crap to me. Its not like nintendo has anything to worry about, why dont they just admit that xbox and sony had some great demos and well have so see where they go from here.

by ISOHaven - 2009-06-09 04:56
» WTF!?!?!?!?!

So, your example is the eye toy? One of the most failed assessories of the console? The eye toy is as favorable as the Wii Mic.

Motion control via camera has failed in the past and will continue to fail. People (360 fanboys) cry like babies over how much movment the Wiimote creates yet these same babies are happier then shlt to move around EVEN MORE for a camera?

Think about it a little longer and you'll see WHY Nintendo rejected it. They rejected it for the same reason MOST devs reject the eye toy.

eyetoy sold ok according to wikipedia "As of November 6, 2008, the EyeToy has sold 10.5 million units worldwide" which isnt that bad for an optional accessory 20 games made for it and a ***** load more that use it as a bonus

where the hell did Eyetoy fail? Last time I checked the sales they were at 10.5 miilion units worldwide. (taken from Wikipedia). That means nearly 10% of all PS2 onwers have one. I agree with the rest though.

" they got better results out of the accelerometer-based tech now used in the Wiimote."

He must be directing what he is saying more towards Microsoft. I am quite sure Sony's motion controller does have accelerometers inside of it. One of the key differences is that Sony is using a camera to track the controller instead of the infrared light triangulation of the Wii. The camera allows for some new gameplay mechanics also. The controller is also very responsive and appears far more accurate than a Wiimote.

I could go into more detail about why I think Sony's method will be a better endgame than both Microsoft and Nintendo's, but nah. This is essentially all thanks to Nintendo anyway, they get the ideas rolling.

"The Simpsons Already Did It"

Another topic on who did it first doesn't really matter. Anyway, just watch South Park episode above. LOL. Anyway, all their accessories and concepts are promising. Let's just wait and see how it goes once it's release. So far the motion sensor that hasn't failed IMHO is the wiimote. It's actually awesome especially that most games that uses it integrates the motion sensing capabilities pretty well, especially their sports titles and others.

All in all it's just that it is innovative and some people were skeptical about it before it was released. Either it was going to be a failure or a winner, and it won. And guess what, people actually welcomed the motion sensing capability of the wii and it's remote.

So, hopefully these new technologies that Microsoft and Sony introduced during E3 won't be a disappointment. Again, let's just wait and see 'til it's launch date or release. Being skeptical is just normal since it's somewhat new or already done but a failed attempt. That is of course disregarding the fanboyisms around here.

The Wii Remote IS camera-based motion sensing.

Iwata is such a bold-faced liar. Of course the people who think he's a twit know this. The people who bought WiiFit on the other hand would believe a toaster is the future of gaming if this dip***** said so.

Some people are thinking its just a camera... However if anyone actually watched the E3 demo for this tech they would know its much more than that.

by Scyiik - 2009-06-09 07:23
» Haha, right.

Because having buttons on a video game controller is something only Nintendo has thought of.

I agree that Nintendo has come out with some alright ideas, and will forever be apart of my *childhood*, but as of late, things like the Wii make me laugh my ass off. Seriously, it's fun as a gimmick, but anything more than that and it's a joke.

And knowing Sony and MS, they'll make better technology than what Nintendo has, but people probably won't buy it as much. That's just how it goes.

by PS34ME - 2009-06-09 07:34
» ??? Strange statement

As Keith K mentioned, the Wii remote is also camera based.

There's an infrared camera built into the end of each remote controller!!! The sensor bar isn't actually a sensor at all, but a series of 10 infrared LEDs, which the wiimote camera 'sees' and uses to detect movement. Sony's solution is the reverse, with the camera fixed near the TV and lights on the end of the remote which is used to detect movement.

So to summarize, Wii has lights by the TV and a camera in each controller, Sony has a camera by the TV and a light on each controller.

I'm sure a Natal like control scheme is something Nintendo considered before deciding on the Wii remote, but the technology probably wasn't good enough at the time, or it was too expensive, and therefore not practical for a console.

Gotta say the PS Eye is the best and most used accessory I've bought for my PS3. I don't really use it much for motion based games, though the Eyepet looks strangely appealing even to me who likes violent action games. Mainly use my Eye for making quick videos, the Smugshots in Burnout Paradise, making stickers in LBP and I far prefer using it's microphone to any headset (mainly cos I like having my headphones on all the time). Very good accessory and while not a fan of motion based games (can't stand playing the Wii) I like seeing what Sony have planned for it. Pretty much all my PS3 owning friends have it too so I don't see how the camera itself is a failure. Maybe the motion stuff is starting to use it to it's fullest potential, I dunno.

Nintendo has better marketing and Nintendo is marketing towards "those-who-dont-have-consoles".

Sony/MS only have those who already own the console to market to, i do think the motion tech from Sony/MS looks good but its not going to make anyone buy a PS3/360 purely because of it. Its going to be cool from what i've seen, those who dont have a PS3/360 probably wont care. I mean, i'll probably pick up the new accessories for my consoles but the next person thinking about buying a Wii wont think "oh.. what about 360's new motion thingy?". This isn't going to impact Wii's console sales much.

And before any one tries to slam me for being a Nintendo fanboy, I'm not, I own an Xbox 360, as well as 2 PSP consoles. Nintendo ditched the camera idea for 2 reasons.

1. They couldn't get it working right.

2. It would be "too expensive." Meaning, they couldn't get a 80% profit margin like with most of their products.

Microsoft got it to work great where Nintendo FAILED. Too bad Nintendo couldn't just buy the WORKING technology from somebody else because the best of Nintendo's in-house inventions include an interactive bath scale and plastic sensor bar stand.

Nintendo has no right to boast about the technology used in their products, EVER.

1. It's obsolete

2. It's not their creation

I was wondering the same thing. They didnt say anything about it, but it looks very similar. If it does, then you wont have to be on the camera for it to work, which will be nice. I like the idea of it, and i'm skeptical of Natal because all the videos were too mocked up for my tastes. any time someone says, lets show you a video of out tech working! and it looks like a commercial, i get a bad feeling.

by PS34ME - 2009-06-10 22:47
» You're probably correct mr.x256

Although there a not many details regarding Sony new remote controller, it's likely to be using the tech mentioned in that patent, i.e sonar.

Therefore the camara will detect the controller's position up/down and left/right, whilst sonar will detect the controller's distance from the camera.

Regarding Natal, you're right to be skeptical of that promotional video Miclowgunman, as we should of all such videos. However, there were live demonstrations of Natal on stage, and there have been many hands-on reports at E3 from those who tried it for themselves. Hence it does seem to be the 'real deal'.
