It's official: Wii to have game-specific friends lists

Wii console - Image 1Nintendo has just sent a confirmation that the Wii's online gaming capability will have no unified friends list. Unlike the setup that is used in the Xbox 360's Live community where your friends list remains constant whichever game that you play, the Wii will instead be making use of game-specific friends lists. This confirmation was picked up by Nima over at Wii Network site via an email. The email sent by R.M. Rickets of Nintendo of America reads:

I can confirm that the Friend Code system in the Wi-Fi Connection (WFC) service for Wii will be the same as it was for the Nintendo DS, meaning game-specific Friend Codes and a separate Friend Roster are used in each game where players can play with identified friends. As with Nintendo DS, the system was created to ensure the gaming environment is kept fun for everyone.

It will be remembered that a few days ago, a similar inquiry had been made with GameSpy regarding the Wii's online gaming capability. GameSpy announced that while it will be supplying its online systems for the Wii's use, the console's multiplayer features will be title-specific.

LAAAAAAMMMMMEEE EEEE

I don't feel like putting in 100 different friend codes for Brawl (if it even goes online)...

Just because DS can get away with this friend code BS doesn't mean they should try it on the Wii...

This console isn't going to win on spiffy motion sensor controls... Because in 3-5 years all the controls are going to run together and it won't be as innovative as before... And the lack of non-tech demo games is going to hurt it... You can't stop that with lame drought filler channels Reggie... If i knew this before i went out and got a Wii i might have reconsidered... Because at this point Nintendo has just as many issue than Sony does...

It's a good decision for keeping the parents happy, however Nintendo needs to realize that it is up to the parents to govern their kids.

"...the system was created to ensure the gaming environment is kept fun for everyone."

How the hell is this going to be fun for everyone? I sure won't have fun typing my friends friend code for every game I get. What makes them think that I won't want the people on my Wii list to be on on my game list? I bet Nintendo was lazy and ported the software from the DS to the Wii. Note to self, internet play for the Wii is doomed.

While I plan on refraining from expletives on this one.. I do agree that this is a very, very poor decision on Nintendo's part. I can understand title-specific lists.. That I understand completely.. But why the hastle with input? Why can't it simply be point and click? Even if you can somehow exchange codes in game via some form of communication.. You'll still have to go through the hastle of inputting them.

In short, my beliefs are thus: Wii Codes - Was a decent idea, would've been great to have been the universal friend list. Title Specific Lists - Also a good idea, if the system were as simple as "Be my friend?" "Sure." "Done." Title Specific AND Console Specific Codes - NOTHING . BUT . HASSLE

Also, let me be the first to admit that I'm a HUGE Nintendo fanboy.. But this.. This erks me. This erks me big time.

Also being a huge Nintendo fanboy (I have a mario/chain chomp tattoo on my wrist, and am wearing a zelda shirt as this is typed.), I agree that this is a load of.. well, poop.

I liked the idea of console specific Wii codes, and thought that would have been a great idea. I was proud that they had lessened the hastle, then this comes up.

Lots of angry fans, I see.

What I think it amounts to is Nintendo doesnt care about online gaming, I mean, come on, if they did we would have had it from the get-go.
