Internet whispers: Wii hard drive to make way for Neo Geo games? |
Ó
As CVG reports, certain rumors have been circulating around the internet saying that Nintendo is on the verge of finally unveiling a hard drive for the Wii. What, what? Last we heard, that rumor was totally debunked back in March.Giving more reason for the rumor to stand on its legs is an announcement of Neo Geo back in April, saying that they're set to pimp out the Wii with their very own Virtual Console titles. And considering how huge those Neo Geo games are (CVG clocks some of the games to as much as 300+ MiB), the Wii's internal 512 MiB memory might not be able to keep up.
As far as the rumor goes, the event we should keep our eyes on would be the coming E3 event, where Nintendo is supposedly going to reveal some new hardware - one of which, of course, could be that hard drive.
We'll give you updates come July when the expo is in full swing.

a waste of time and money
Surely they could use the SDcard slot for storage.. Its cheep to buy a 4gb SDCard now-days
512MB internal memory? I thought the Wii had 512mbit internal memory, which isn't more than 64MB.
Nope, 512 megabytes
I wouldn't be opposed to using the SD card, but a hard drive would be nice...but it would depend on how big it is, how it hooks to the system (I'd assume USB), and how it looks next to or on the system. I can see it basically being a mini Wii looking thing with a matching stand and all that. Not really sure I'd want that, but I'd get it for sure for the Neo games.
Also, from what I've read, the Wii only supports up to 2GB SD cards anyway. But 2GB bulk SanDisk SD cards can be had for under $20 Amazon.
I say that they were all set to go on the HD, but they realized that we would be able to run our "back ups" from the hard drive thorugh our modchips and they said "Shoot, they should at least buy the DVD-R to burn 'em", that's my two cents, and YES this is speculation, I'm not saying it can be or will be done
Ummm, the Wii has 512MB, bytes, not bits. Neo Geo games are around 300-400Mbits, which is about 30MB (give or take). There's enough space on the internal memory, but using SD cards for this would be much more practical, honestly. You could fit the entire Neo Geo colelction (except maybe Neo Geo CD games) on to one 2GB SD card. C'mon Nintendo, don't be lame, just use the hardware you put in there in the first place, especially since it will do just fine!
