Infendo: Nintendo to monopolize gaming again?

console war - Image 1An article posted on Infendo ran a discussion on the prospect of the Wii, and in effect Nintendo, going monopolistic as it did in the NES era and taking over the gaming world. The article pointed to the weakening sales of main rival Microsoft Xbox 360 and altogether dismissed the significance of Sony's PlayStation 3 in this generation's console war.

Pointing to the successful marketing and innovations of the Wii while highlighting the decline in Xbox 360 sales, the article imagined Nintendo's hot-selling console rolling out in all directions and flattening everything in its path. The reports of Nintendo publishing 124 first-party games in 2007 seemed to suggest to the author that an encore of the SNES days may be at hand.

The article went as far as comparing the Xbox 360 to the iPod, saying "Apple's iPod rollout -- a product which sold at the time for more than the Xbox 360 -- it had sold nearly 30 million units. Microsoft is struggling to achieve less than half that." The article concludes that the Xbox 360 may very well be "2007's house of cards."

There are a lot of other interesting points raised by the write-up which you may want to read for yourself. We won't make any judgments regarding the ideas expressed, though we would like to point out that iPods and Xbox 360s are two very different products that cater to distinct crowds. You may own both, but it's not likely that you bought them for the same reasons.

And what about each console serving niche crowds categorized by age groups? You be the judge of that. Follow the read URL and tell us what you think.

"The reports of Nintendo publishing 124 first-party games in 2007"

That's very possible, after all 99% will most likely end up being a party/mini game type game, as if the Wii needs any more party/mini games.

LOL they alltogether dismissed the PS3, so now people arent even counting it in the race anymore. It must suck to be a console war loser, especially one who is now $600 poorer.

if the wii is the future of gaming then then there won't be a future and everything Sony has done to expand gaming to mature audience would have been for nothing cause Nintendo seems hell bent in making nothing more than an arcade type console filled with nothing more than games that are fun for short bursts, this is just my opinion and yes I do own a Wii and yes I haven't touched in over a month (their is nothing good out their to play apart from Zelda which I already have)

The fact they dismissed the PS3 altogether just shows how bias the article was to Nintendo, and how stupid this article as whole actually is, seriously the PS3 is definitly still a contender in this console wars and to think otherwise is just stupid.

Also, I'm sure all the Wii fans just LOVE all them wonderful ports and mini games their getting, they must be having so much fun right now, oh wait half the games suck arse or are only fun in 5 min bursts, way to go nintendo, but I bet you like how Nintendo just bends you over and *****s you hard.

The only people that complain that "Wii has kiddy games" are adolescent teenagers. Yeah the Wii has lots of mini games, every other system is overcrowded with crappy sports games.

The only thing that the other systems boast is "better graphics" which frankly, I don't really care about. I still love my playstation 2 the best, and my Wii is a close second. Actually I loved my dreamcast even more than my PS2 until someone stole it :(

This just in....PS3 still isn't selling.

Wii is on the brink of bursting microsofts 2yr head start in mere months time...due to the fact Wii is selling like hot sex and no one can seem to stop it.

yep the wii currently sucks, it's only selling well because poor *****s like your self can't see value in ther other consoles even if it where burnt into your eye's.

Serously the Wii should be no more than 150 bucks, eveything in it is just dated technology, OMG virtua boy all over again, man why can't nintendo have done the wii and all it's unique wiimjote controls with awesome next-gen HD graphics what's this *****ing bull***** last gen-graphics, what next Wii2 with SNES graphics?

It's totally ridiculous, as ther is a HUGE segment of what they would call "hardcore" gamers that love their FPS's and ONLINE play.

It's that market that Wii will not touch. I am part of that market, most of my games are FPS, racing or sports, and any little dinky game experiences I want can also be found on Arcade.....so i'm not sure what this "infendo" website is smoking....maybe the biased pipe ???

This article is as rediculous as a brooklin plumber in a mushroom kingdom.

I dont even like the PS3, but I agree that its going too far to discount it, and calling the 360 competition for Nintendo is just completely stupid. The 360 offers very different gameplay, such as online, and adult level games like dead rising. Nintendo does not cater to everyone's interest, so it will never "monopolize" the market. You have to be out of your mind to believe that.

That iPod comparison is also the babbling of an ideot. The gigantic difference between a 360 and an iPod is that with a 360, you need to the buy games at $60 each. The ipod on the other hand sold like candy back in its day, because it came out at a point in time where everyone was downloading MP3s for free on nappster. There is no question why the iPod was successful, and it wasnt for legit legal reasons.

You're right there, the xbox 360/ps3 cater for different gameplay than the Wii. I have both a PS3 and an Wii.

The whole family play the Wii, but the PS3 is pretty much my domain since the games are'nt suitable/easy enough for my son and my wife won't ever play anything on it.

But let her loose on WiiSports and it's a different matter. In my opinion the Wii can live quite happily next to a PS3/Xbox360... Mind you the Wii seems a bit dry on the games front - my son plays Gamecube Pokemon on it!

I am an xbox fanboy I don't have a problem with the wii but all this talk about the wii beating the competition has got to stop the wii is a fun system if you have it but I don't think the wii is a must have system I think the xbox 360 or the ps3 are must haves, the wii has not proven anything yet this generation has only begun even with xbox 360s lead this gen millions of consoles will be sold and the wii is closing in on xbox but will not catch the xbox 360 this year maybe in 2008, maybe the wii may never catch 360 and I have my reason for saying that which systems are all the big games coming out for xbox 360 and ps3, the following games will not come to the wii, - grand theft auto 4, halo 3, gears of war, god of war ps3, lost odyssey, final fantasy 13 ps3, white knight story ps3, blue dragon, uncharted ps3, tomb raider next gen, turok next gen, haze, wipeout ps3, metal gear solid ps3, devil may cry, too human and I could go on and on and on the point is I could care less if wii sells a billion units the games I want and what a lot of gamers want will not come to the wii who will care besides nintendo fanboys about metroid, mario and zelda when all those games I mentioned are coming out only on xbox 360 and ps3 with far superior graphics lets get real people the wii should have a had the power that way they could have had the wii mote and the games I mentioned above not to mentioned if microsoft and sony releases motion sensing controllers which can easily be done what edge will the wii have then this is a repeat of nintendo 64 all over again guys.

# lameGuest 2007-05-01 01:05
that is the lamest argument i've heard from anyone. sony has ditched the ps2, all too eager to dismiss? ahaha after almost 10 years of supporting an old console, they choose to bring out a new version and they are too eager to dismiss? lame.

the xbox360 is a completely different product to an ipod, millions of losers waster all their money on ipods when they could have got the same thing for a third of the price with a different brand name on it, years before the ipod even existed. and the xbox360 is doing pretty well, the ps3 is slowly getting there.

The Wii was a great concept that was ruined by the decision that people dont mind if their games look like they were made in 1995, its called progress. Nintendo are making a massive profit on these stupid little Wii consoles, it wasn't about innovation, it was to regain some profits after they failed with an unsupported (though great) system the Gamecube, and I am sure the Wii will head the same way.

Thats my rant, and my two cents, and just my opinion. but true.

I happen to be in my 20's and I can still say that the "wii has kiddy games". you know why? cause it's true. Yes, there are big people games, but there are a LOT more 'kiddy' games available.

I completely 110% agree with you there mate, the wii is a fad and I can safely say that after completing the bug riddled COD3 on it and Legend of Zelda I am bored of it. It would be better if it wern't so full of childish mini games. Developers should look to make games like Resistance or Halo for it... but for now my PS3 is the shizz and I love it, I have Resistance, Oblivion and Motorstorm which are all keeping me happy and also 3 Blu-Ray movies :D

I stroooongly doubt the Wii will hold. I don't mind the WIi, it's a fun machine, but not a good machine.

Instead of making the motion sensor controlls as an add-on to their GameCube, when 1: It wasn't popular, 2: Not all games would include the controller, they came up with making a new GameCube with internal motion sensor controller. It's more or less the same machine, just slightly buffed(really slightly) and repacked.

And this action is of course GENIOUS! Now they're the fastest selling "next-gen" console on the marked with 7 year old technology. It's one of the best sales tricks I've ever heard of.

This being said. The Wii is fun, I admit. But the outdated graphics, outdated capacity on DVDs, I belive it won't last long enough to please the buyers. It will last until the end of course, but it won't lead until then.

What if PS2 didn't release Guitar Hero 2, just made an internal guitar and re-released PS2 calling it PlayStation Guitar, and it sold like hell! Same machine, but new name + internal controller. It's the same *****. ;)

# hardcore gamers?????Guest 2007-05-01 04:58
i love the way people try and say they are hardcore gamers and they only play 3 genre's of games......fps,violent mindless games like gta and sports games......call me what you want i would just like to point out few things. first off i play almost any game if its fun it dont matter what style or if the graphics are awesome all that matters is if the game is good and thats the most important part of the game, those who dont agree are idiots and need to grow up and stop trying to act tough by saying you need a grown up game lol. second the wii has games for everyone from kids to adults but they dont only target guys who think they are to cool to play a mario game or even zelda for that matter. if you want me to make a list of games that are t-m for the wii i will, but the point im getting at is that a hardcore gamer is someone who enjoys games and plays all different genre's of games not just a few. i call myself a hardcore gamer cause i been playing them my whole life and i have owned almost all consoles......nintendo in my opinion is catering to what gamers should care about and thats the gameplay and yes there is alot of ports right now and thats cause developers not nintendo. but think what you want i just wanted to try and open some eyes and maybe start a decent discussion with someone who thinks they know what they are talking about.

p.s i know my gramer is bad and i do have a life so dont try and use either of those against me in a arguement just talk about the topic and what i said lol.

# Wii? Not yetGuest 2007-05-01 05:53
I own a Wii and I'll be the first to admit that it has no way NEAR won this console war. And to discount the PS3 to a 'lost' status is ridiculous. The PS3 has had (and IS having) one of the worst launch periods in console history. But Sony ain't Sega...they have a LOT of money to back them up, not to mention a predassesor that was one of the best selling consoles in history.

So, no, the PS3 isn't dead. Not by a long shot. This Fall will give us a better indication of how well/not well the PS3 is going to fare, because many titles for it are due then.

# WeeCube is for retards that like swinging their arms around like a 5 year old boyGuest 2007-05-01 07:19
It is not just better graphix. 1st of all, the PS3 and 360 have WAY better graphix, but more importantly, the 360 and 3's Cpu's are vastly superior to the Wii. So, you have much better a.i., environments, size of the game worlds, physics, sound, realtime ligthing and time. I could go on and on.

The WeeCube IS a fad. 360 and PS3 games leave the Wee in the dust. If the Wee wins like this riduculous article predicts, then we as gamers are in for a sad future and our only option will be to spend thousands on a PC.

I hate the Wee more than any other system the Plumber has made b4.

What a joke, 7 year old hardware with a RF "motion controller" and stupid nieve people such as yourself buy this crap.

I understand that casual gamers will buy this crap and non-gamers too, but REAL gamers should shudder and do everything possible to support the 360 and PS3.

For not buying into stupid hype. Sony will succeed, so will Nintendo, and Microsoft as well. I don't believe we will have an outright domination this console war. The PS3 may end up selling still, at a mild rate, 10 years from now. That baby has got a lot staying power. So, shut up analysts.

# Wii is CheapTemprix 2007-05-01 14:36
The Wii is cheap. That's why it's selling so well. It's the same price as the last-gen consoles were when they first came out. I personally like the Wii and hope to buy one someday. For now, I play my PS3 like there's no tomorrow. With friends and family too, thanks to some PSN downloads that are very casual games. I'll get the Wii for two main reasons: short bursts of gameplay when I have to leave in half an hour or so, and its cheap price point. Who knows, maybe I'll buy a 360 later on too...

Well... I think that the publisher of this article is someone who has either a XBOX 360 or a PS3 and is just talking ***** about nintendo, if the Wii has such a great success is because that's what the people want to play. And it seems that you think that the Wii is the winner of the 7th generation of videogames system, well you better wait some time because I can tell you that nothing is for sure, there is some time that we need to wait to see. Also every other system is trying to follow the steps of Nintendo, well I think that Nintendo is just trying to get something unike to the videogames area because that' what Nintendo stand for. And for all of you Nintendo haters ***** you all
