Impatiently waiting for Wii to go Online... When in heck will it?

Online Pokemon Battles - Image 1Face it: Nintendo is excused for not having "enough" games (remember that supposed "drought"?) for their console. This is due to their timely releases of amazing first party titles like Super Paper Mario, and their all round good PR in the gaming industry (despite the fact that using friend codes is like subjecting yourself to a beating from Kratos).

Nintendo, and their Wii, are the baby-faces of this generation's console Wrestle-fest. They can do no wrong. Thing is, people, and more importantly, Nintendo gamers, are still wondering exactly when Nintendo will get their act together when it comes to online gaming.

Even Bryan Intihar, editor at Electronic Gaming Monthly, is wondering about that. He says: "With every month, online multiplayer becomes more and more important. ...As a Wii owner, I don't know what they're waiting for."

A Reuters report notes that according to Intihar, even game developers don't have the tools to create online multiplayer games for the Wii at the moment. The current rumor at the moment is that Nintendo isn't allowing any third-party videogame to include online multiplayer during the entirety of 2007. According to Intihar, developers are still waiting for "Nintendo to tell them what to do."

Nintendo counters speculation and criticism by noting that the demand for online multiplayer is higher in Western markets and not in Japan where the company is based. They do note though, that they're committed to eventually bringing online play experience to Wii gamers. They also add that their first Online Multiplayer title, Pokemon Battle Revolution, should be out by this summer.

Jamil Moldelina, director of the Game Developer's Conference notes that Nintendo has always "marched to the beat of its own drum" especially when it comes to the Wii. When you think about it, it makes sense, as the Wii tackles next-generation gaming in a manner that is different that its competitors. Moldelina predicts that Nintendo can succeed without necessarily following what the opposition does, and despite the importance of online play for consoles like the Xbox 360. Moldelina notes: "Nintendo's concern is the individual player. ...There's a danger when you try to match a trend. I think Nintendo's strategy is a good one."

Well what about you folks? Do you think Nintendo should give third party folks the support they need to make online multiplayer games now? Or should they make all of us, gamers and developers alike, wait for them to do it on their own first with Pokemon Battle Revolution?

Nintendo might lose me

Unless I see some big news from Nintendo about online gaming soon I may just sell my Wii on Ebay or donate it to a retirement home. The PS3 is getting all my playing time now that I've beat Zelda anyway.

We all know

That Nintendo like to do their own thing, but I think that arrogance is hurting them a little. A number of friends are getting annoyed at no online and are contemplating getting a 360. I myself am probably going to get a 360 also. That's money Nintendo has lost. There are almost no games through Q2 that I want to get due to the huge spread of kiddie titles and lack of Nintendo's hardcore 1st parties and 3rd parties doing ***** ports. (Ubi soft, I'm looking at you, I'm not buying a single one of your titles until you sort your ***** out) I can imagine they're trying to do something unique and different and not just copy everyone else, but they should have started their online plans 2-3 years ago as they developed the console. Developers need online due to the fact that the games are pretty lack lustre anyway, so they need as much as they can get to sell em.

online

if u want to play online u should have bought a 360 or ps3. the wii is designed as an offline experience for the family in front one screen. the online part is just an after thought.

Nintendo is starting to suck....again

I agree with you kacorot. The only reason I want a wii is for Brawl. Other than that, the Wii can kiss ass. They're also saying that brawl might not be WiFi compatable. WHAT IN THE ***** ARE YOU DOING!! sorry excuse for a game company.

Thats the problem!

"the online part is just an after thought." Thats the problem!!! Don't get me wrong, I love what Nintendo has done with the one player gaming experience but online gaming is the future, I would gladly play an online version of Wii-sports or any other title Nintendo cares to put out.

I bought a wii and I want to have online games. They should put almost all their man power into an online plan and let everyone make online games, including themselves.

...

First of all, I am not here to cuss out the Wii like most 360 fanboys... the only problem is, nintendo also needs to offer an online game mode so that they can please all types of gamers. It is sorely lacking For example, I have become a madden 07 veteran on the 360. I can tell what the CPU is going to call by the lineup they are showing before the play almost 90% of the time. I also discovered that in all versions of the game, if you move a defender up to the line, the CPU automatically changes to a pass play... well I guess my point is this; CPU's are too predictible and boring. The CPU never really tests a player's limits in most games. Also, I love the fact that after I beat a game, I still can go online to X-box live and play it so it does not feel old.

You have to be good at using scouting features and actual football strategy. Also, I love the fact that after I beat a game, I still can go online to X-box live and play it so it does not feel old.
