Huge Wii shipment arrives in Europe

Nintendo's flying pretty high up in the clouds these days. Their new Wii console launched in the U.S. on November 19 and sold over 600,000 consoles in just one week - an impressive rate of nearly one console sold per second continuously since the launch date. Now the company is getting ready to duplicate the success of the Wii's U.S. launch, this time in Europe.

A huge shipment of Wiis has now arrived in Europe ahead of the December 8 launch date and with an unprecedented number of pre-orders having been taken, it's highly likely that people will be lining up around the block for the European launch too. Nintendo already has reached an installed base of 7 million in Europe with the DS, a success which Wii aims to replicate in the home.

Says Laurent Fischer, Marketing Director, Nintendo of Europe, "WeÂ’re launching a great product and we knew that demand would be high. NintendoÂ’s expansion of the gaming market is paying dividends and Wii really is the 'must have' item for Christmas. Obviously, weÂ’re doing everything we can to make sure that everyone who wants one, gets one."

I called and asked around today several different shops in my area and finally got some numbers squeezed out of a sales rep. This particular shop of Anttila chain is going to get 6 units for 8.12. launch date and 16 units for the 18th. All of them reserved beforehand. Doesn't look too good for us who live in western Finland...

The Nordic countries are not getting many units at all. About 6000 are allocated for Sweden, while Denmark, Norway and Finland get about 4000 units each :(.
