HMV head: PS3 exceeds expected sales in UK, friendly competition between next-gens |

The PS3 may be suffering in US and Japan territories, but it continues to fight in Germany and even the UK. HMV's head of games for entertainment specialist, Tim Ellis, reports that the PS3 exceeded expected sales, while other consoles are doing well too.Sony is still in denial about price cuts, but Ellis believes that the PS3's sales performance will get better if the much-awaited price drop comes.
Ellis also gave much cheers to Nintendo, saying the Wii is still one of the hottest items in HMV. He also thanked Ninty saying "Supply is stabilizing and Nintendo is doing a very good job of keeping us updated on key developments."
He jumped ahead and commented on the Xbox 360, having no problems with its sales after 18 months since release and expects Microsoft to know what they're doing. "The console continues to hold its own and I'm sure Microsoft will know when to consider stimulating sales further via pricing," Ellis stated.
All in all, the console race in the UK is pretty tough. Why can't they just get along? That's what seems to be in Ellis' mind. "From a retail and customer perspective it's great to have three games heavyweights relatively matched and vying for market domination. This creative tension is leading to fantastic innovative technology and brilliant games."

There’re so many stup+d PS3 fanboys right now who bark that PS3 is superior to X360 console; that’s the reason why I wrote this informal essay.
Let’s compare the most sold X360 game and the most sold PS3 game (HEAD TO HEAD DEATHMATCH); then talk about which console is superior to another at the end. Each category is worth 100 points unless mentioned. If it’s drawn, both get half points.
I spent much time to read about 10 different reviews on both games. Most sentences below are NOT my opinions (remember this). Most sentences below are from the reviews I read online.
[Epic’s Gears of War Vs. Insomniac’s Resistance: Fall of Man]
- Gameplay (300 pts): Resistance is a generic and mindless run & gunner. Epic adopted and improved Resident Evil 4’s point of view; then GoW’s over-the-shoulder revolutionized the gaming industry. Now, Sony’s best future games Uncharted Drake’s Fortune and Ratchet and Clank Future (when using weapons) both totally copied GoW’s point of view. Winner: GoW
- Graphics (300): GoW wins by a land-slide. No need to discuss more. Winner: GoW
- Awards: Many gamers bought GoW because it won so many awards. Winner: GoW
- Main character (200): Epic did a very good job on this. Marcus Fenix is as memorable as Halo’s Master Chief. Resistance’s Nathan is simply too boring to control. Winner: GoW
- Average review score: GoW got 94 from 172 different game related publications; Resistance got 89 from 164 publications; many gamers bought GoW because it got extremely high review scores.
Winner: GoW
- Level of Appealing (Fun Factor) (200): Resistance is all about run and gun like Halo 3 or Unreal Tournament 3. GoW has deep tactical play. Winner: GoW
- Online Modes (Multiplayer) (300): Resistance offers much more game types, but all of them are mindless run and gunner. GoW should have supported at least 8 versus 8 multiplay (4 Vs. 4 is just sub-standard). Winner: Drawn
- Single-player (SP): Resistance’s developers spent so much time, budget, and effort on this (Resistance’s SP is much longer); the thing is that Resistance’s SP is plainly boring and not even fun. Winner: GoW
- Weapons (200): Resistance has technically extremely advanced weapons, but these weapons are not balanced for multiplay. GoW has much less number of weapons; the thing is that lancer (the gun with chainsaw) alone is better (the powerful feeling; sound, lighting, and decal effects) than all weapons in Resistance combined. Torque bow and boomshot are extremely well made, too. Winner: GoW
- Music & Sound Effects (300): Resistance’s sound is on average; GoW’s sound is superb (especially guns and explosion sounds are mind-blowing). Winner: GoW
- Longevity (Replay Value) (300): Resistance’s run and gun gets old extremely quickly. Winner: GoW
- Technical Advancement (200): Resistance’s extremely huge maps + 42-player online + Resistance’s bull’s eye and sapper guns. Winner: Resistance
- General Concept & Originality: Resistance is a copycat of Half Life, Call of Duty, and Unreal Tourney. Winner: GoW
- Character Animation: Both games offer silky smooth movement of units. Winner: Drawn
- (NPC’s) A.I.: GoW’s AI is better made. Epic did a very good job here. If you kill one enemy in GoW, you feel satisfied and rewarded; if you kill one (or ten) enemy in Resistance, you feel bored and lame (LOL). Winner: GoW
- Atmosphere (Presentation) (200): GoW’s sci-fi movie like mood is all over the places. Winner: GoW
- Interface (attention to detail, how polished is the final game?): Winner: Drawn
- Overall Impressiveness (300): In general, GoW even deeply impresses diehard Sony fanboys. Winner: GoW
Finally, GoW won by f+cking huge margin.
- Resistance’s total score: 450 points
- GoW’s total score: 3,050 points
I said at the start that we need to talk about which console is superior to another at the end. Now, let’s talk about that. Which console is superior? If you’re still trying to defend your pathetic PS3 console then you must be illiterate and blind, period.

Winner: Come now, do you have to ask? PDZ was a massive let down and Resistance is a *****ing great (yes generic, but still great due to the high level of polish and balancing) game.
Also, wait til Uncharted and Ratchet are out before you speak about them, oh, and Ratchet and Clank has been around for over half a decade, how the ***** could it copy a game from last year. *****ing wanker. That is all.

I agree with Reason, that not even a 360 fanboy could agree with his idiotic post. Theyre both great games with their own features, and trying to compare them is like trying to compare Mario to Zelda (both great, so why even compare?).
But I have to correct Words comment, GoW does have a story. It just wasnt as fleshed out as it could have been since they were planning on telling the story through installments ala GoW2 etc etc. But Im with you on the run and gun aspect of RFoM, its not that kind of game which only further proves that AoxomomoxoA is judging a game he hasnt even played.

Ive been here for quite some time actually, about as far back as when there was a Vecha imposter who went around spewing out racist comments on every topic, back when QJ didnt even allow comments, and way before they added the Jumps feature. Ive seen many many fools like this guy come and go, and I know it will only be a matter of time before hes banned from posting comments. But like I said, Im not bothered.
PS3 is flopping in Japan and the USA and now the Wii is available everywhere it is just going to go from bad to worse and in Europe to,If MS make that decision to drop the core system to the price of the Wii I think the PS3 is in serious danger.
GoW is about as good as a load on a garbage truck. Let's face it, a PC will always be better than any console.
I dont really hate the PS3 but to be quite honest I haven't actually seen what they mean that the PS3 is doing good in the UK. Usually when a good console comes ot it sells out pretty much straight away but with the PS3 lots of retailers where trying to get rid of them one shop I visited when I checked the stock level they had about 20 PS3's in stock and from what I understand the UK didn't really get that many to start off with. Also I personally believe that they may have chased away some of the playsation fans with the constant delays to the release however, it is most likley that they will start to be picking up speed in sales especially when it gets closer to christmas as per usual.
Overall though I cant honestly give a fair opinion on how the PS3 is at the moment I can only assume and hear from third parties as I only have an xbox 360 at the moment.I will get a PS3 eventually but not within the next year or so based on the price I am afraid as I am a cheap skate :) I would probably buy a wii as I already have a more serious games machine and most games are multi platform now I dont think there will be much differences between the consoles in the future if only multiplayer could go cross console then it would be brilliant.

True, PS3 is not selling well in Japan but XBoox 360 is not selling at all in Japan. Many stores no longer carry it and the ones that do place it in the back corner. I have never seen a workable demo unit. They are always either not turned on or turned on but without a game.

Ps3 is so much better than xbox. I have all three and they are all crap apart from ps3. xbox was good to fill the gap until ps3 release but nothing more I gave mine to the wife. Ps3 is what everyone wants.

Hi, my name is AoxomomoxoA. I enjoy comparing two awesome games on completely subjective means of catagorization. I also enjoy claiming that games such as Ratchet and Clank have stolen the completely unique "third person view" even though the first Ratchet and Clank came out in 2001. Oh and Spyro had it. And Crash Bandicoot. And Syphon filter (1995 anyone?). In fact plenty of games use it, but that doesnt matter to me. I also think that its completely logical to base which system is more superior soely off of one game. I also enjoy the smell of my buttcrack. Good day!
Gow beats resistance but FF13 will crush GoW. Even Folklore rivals GoW's graphics and the PS3 has been out 8 months. Your argument is null and void.
Lately the XBOX 360 has had around 1/3 the sales of the PS3. In comparison, the 360's sales really aren't that bad in Japan anymore.
The sad thing is, Japan and Germany are the only countries the PS3 has had remotely impressive sales and sales are way down in Japan.
