Handheld GameCube Rumor: Here Today, Gone Today

Ó

gamecubeHave you heard about the one where IBM is supposedly working on a revised Broadway chip for a future Nintendo handheld that plays GameCube discs? If you missed it, it's because the rumor disappeared as if it was swallowed by the Bermuda Triangle.

It started with IGN's Matt Casamassina's article on a bunch of Wii rumors. The handheld Gamecube gossip reads:

"Insiders claim to have seen final hardware. The Broadway CPU is allegedly in the 750 CL line, a continuation of the 750 GX series. IBM may be working on a revised Broadway chip with a lower clock speed for a future Nintendo handheld -- presumably one that plays GameCube discs."

The paragraph has since been taken off like an unwanted tumor while the rest of the Wii rumor article is still there. Some rumors are just too hot too handle!

That's because he was supposed to be writing about rumors, not making up his own.

If this is true and to take another leap and say that this new handheld would be able to play Cube games that doesn't really make sense.

If Gamecube games can run on scaled back CPU then either the games were no where near pushing what the system could do or that this rumor is false. Or that IGN was just making an assumption on them running Cube discs.

It is possible they just use the medium and not play GCN games. Quite an odd turn for Nintendo who is all about portability and load times.

I will file this under my, too early to give a crap about folder.

They mean its scaled back compared the CPU IBM are building for the wii not the one they built the gamecube.

So it woul dif true be able to play gamecube games as it would probably be as least as powerful as the gamecube cpu, and of course the same architecture as will the wii's processor will be.

But it is still just a rumour

listen to this: the gba is like a snes portable, the ds is like a n64, so the next logic thing Nintendo handheld would be a handheld close to the gamecube. But the handhelds are always lower ins specs then the originals.

But I dont thing it would play gamecube games.

It would NEVER ever be a handheld that plays cube disks. It could however be a handheld that plays the Wiis virtual console software, that would be entirely plausible.

Which could also mean cube games as digital downloads, but never ever as disks.

# hmm..... why couldn't it play discsGuest 2006-08-09 16:53
ok nonbelievers.....

gc disks are not much bigger than a umd

and the ds fat was bigger then a psp (folded it was thicker unfolded it was taller)

so why couldn't it they could fix battery probs that the psp has as you can get a stronger battery nowaday's and a portable version of a console has already been done (the portable genesis i forget what it was called)

...you're thinking of the Sega Nomad. Unfortunately it never took off, due to the fact that it was horrendously expensive and ate AA batteries like popcorn. Nowadays, with improvements in miniaturization and battery technology, something like that is a bit more feasible.

But a handheld Gamecube... oh yeah.

lets see.. they did give us a handheld snes that was better than a snes.. (in some ways) and a handheld n64 that was better than an n64 in someways... i wouldnt be terribly surprised if the gameboy evolution was even more "the *****" than the ds
