Guitar Hero franchise sets new record, makes USD 1 billion in 26 months |
Ó
Activision has announced that the Guitar Hero franchise has set an industry record by generating over US$ 1 billion in North American retail sales over a span of 26 months according to the data gathered by the NPD Group. If you've been keeping up, this shouldn't come as a big surprise considering the success of Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Xbox 360, Wii, PS2, PS3, PC), which was a key factor in the NPD Group's naming of Activision as the number one publisher in the U.S. in 2007.
The Guitar Hero franchise has sold more than 14 million copies since the first game hit the market back in 2005. In addition, Activision has given word that users have downloaded over five million songs since downloadable content became available.
As expected, Activision is very pleased with this turn of events. So before we go, we'll leave you with a few words from the company's President and Chief Executive Officer Michael Griffith who shared a few of his thoughts on the franchise and its success:
Guitar Hero is one of the biggest brands and one of the most powerful distribution platforms in all of entertainment today. Guitar HeroÂ’s popularity with broad audiences is a confirmation that video games have become a true mass medium.

Wow that's very good, I think the GH stats will start to slip now with Rock Band being available though...everyone I've played RB with loves it more than GH. Not that GH isn't fun, it's just Rock Band is more fun it seems
in my 360... and believe me that rock band have more fun... more community, more songs, more ways to play it and have more songs of metallica lol... a shame that doesn't have nothing of Guns + Roses... and have every taste of rock, not just for metal lovers... and in guitar hero the download songs is a joke...
RB is gonna wipe the floor with GH in 08'... and yeah I WAS a GH fan til this last iteration.
...but will Activision allow Harmonix release the patch for the GH3 controller for RockBand? No. They want even more money.
Don't know what you are talking about, but my GH3 controller works fine on my 360...
"no workie" on PS3's RB...
Indeed. This seems to be a PS3 only problem. Which makes it even worse. If it had been the same on all platforms, I can understand them (maybe), wanting to hold out for money etc, but I dont get why they would be this selfish for just one platform.
The only reason it works on Xbox 360 is because when they made the controllers, Activision and Harmonix were still together, so they both own the rights to the 360 GH controllers. Since the PS3 version was made after the split, only Activision owns the rights to the tech. Guess thats what happens when Mama and Papa get a divorce, its all about the money.
