Greenpeace: PS3, Xbox 360, Wii still 'playing dirty', using harmful materials

Environmentalist group Greenpeace recently released a document entitled "Playing Dirty: Analysis of hazardous chemicals and materials in games console components", which spoke out against the different video game console manufacturers and their negligence in rolling out environmentally friendly hardware.

Greenpeace explained how Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft failed to ensure that their current line of consoles were free of unsafe chemicals and materials. Previous claims from the three companies mentioned that they were taking steps to make sure that the production of their respective hardware conformed with Greenpeace standards, however the environmentalist group begged to differ.

The report detailed the various dangerous components all three major consoles (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii) were built from. Materials such as beryllium were found in Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PS3, which has been linked to lung cancer when recycled. Softening agents known as phthanlates, which are banned in various European products, were also found on both consoles.

Nintendo has been on Greenpeace's watch list for a long time already. The company was previously noted to have no environmental policies regarding their products and was listed at the bottom of the group's worldwide assessment of technology-based companies. Greenpeace invited the companies to put forward various return and recycle policies to compensate for the lack of methods to properly dispose and recycle game consoles.

Zeina Al-Hajj, Greenpeace's International Toxic Campaign coordinator, had this to say regarding the matter: "This is an industry that is changing our way of life and if it does not take these challenges upon themselves to be more green we are going to be in deep trouble very, very soon."

And.......We care not what they say or think. But good for them at least they tried. But this will have no impact on people buying the products unless they are hardcore greenies who choose instead to plant a tree in there living room or chain themselves to one. But hey at least they're not blaming video games for violence instread they are accusing them of giving us cancer. FFS what doesnt give us cancer these days? we shud neither eat, sleep, breath, or enjoy ourselves the way things are going, so not to become obease, or get some kind of life threating disease, but then we would get hassled because no one works and we are unfit.

I mean (although we may shudder to think of it today), when it comes time to dump our PS3, 360, or Wii .....what is the most-likely outcome?

A) we'll consult the phone book and carefully cart them off to the nearest recycling center

B) we'll dump 'em in the nearest trash bin, they will be compacted in the garbage truck, to finally rest at the bottom of a large landfill

....hmmm? --Anyone?

"Green" is today's money-making red herring: a noble concept but ultimately a ruse for the rich to charge more for "green-friendly" products, in the fear that the "non -green-friendly" products will kill us. ---I, for one, would be far more concerned if they were saying that (when the consoles heat-up during use) they emit an invisible toxic gas into the air containing these chemicals.

Now that would be something to be concerned about.

to my knowledge, consoles rarely get thrown away, they get sold, given, traded, etc. until it's a retro console and a collector want to buy it.

now that I think of it, I dont think there are that many collectors out there, so you're probably right

Nobody is thinking about recycling their PS3 or Xbox, because you dont buy a console to recycle it... You buy it to play games xD

Its a lame scam to attack gaming because they know that gaming and video game consoles are beating them in profit and sales. losers... who cares whats in my ps3 because im not going to recycle it nor smash it up into little pieces and expose this so called "lung cancer causeing" material.

D) Keep it for nostalgic value.

I still have my original NES in my basement, despite the fact that it quit working in the mid 90's. The only system I have ever sold was my Saturn, and I miss it terribly.
