Glenn Entis of EA: beware unrealistic graphics (like Final Fantasy) |
Ó
Better graphics isn't enough. If you just increase the polygons, you will end up with better-looking characters, but that doesn't mean they'll look more "realistic." You need to improve the motion physics. And you also need to improve gameplay. This is the point made by Glenn Entis, Academy-Award-winning senior VP and chief visual and technical officer for EA games (he was formerly CEO from Dreamworks Interactive). At the Montreal Games Summit, he used Final Fantasy as an example:
In Final Fantasy, the modelling fidelity was really better than the motion fidelity. In other words, when you looked at the models, they signalled an expectation to the audience that the motion couldn't deliver upon.
Alert the Final Fantasy fandom...
...and let the carnage commence.
An EA VP has dissed Final Fantasy for having unrealistic graphics. We can just imagine the chaos this is causing in RPG forums everywhere.
EA, on the other hand, has been hard at work to not only make characters photo-realistic, they're also making them move realistically. An example of how EA is achieving realism, according to Entis, is Tiger Woods PGA Tour (for the PC, Wii, Xbox 360, PSP, and PS3). Entis has proof that Tiger Woods PGA Tour has achieved realism: Tiger Woods couldn't tell he was looking at computer graphics.

Is this when we diss EA for games like the ones he mentioned to be too realistic and no fun? - or do we mention Burnout and say its not realistic and the cars run like rubbish? - or do we go onto say that all EA racing games now are rubbish cos they all feature Catch-up which isnt realistic motion?
The Evil EA :-p suck my balls

EA, u had your chance. Stay making sports games rather than trying something that you CANNOT come close to perfecting.

Like the graphics in the screenshots of EA's NFS: Carbon.
Tell me WHERE in the whole darn game do the wheels blur out like they used to show off in the screenshots?
Also are the graphics as crisp? I don't think so.
Although they went one step ahead!!! They show off .. Unrealistic gameplay, when they used to show the trailers of the Canyon races, the tires were to the ground as hot butter was to a glass shape, slide away! But can you actually do that in canyon races? I do NOT think so. The cars actually stick to the ground as much as their tires' grip allows to.
So here's some advice for you EA... These games, might have unrealistic graphics, according to REAL Life objects, which just makes them even MORE original. BUT They do comply to what they promise on early screenshots and don't cut the work later on... as in... they're realistic in terms of objectives and showing off. ;)
Just a tip before EA goes around criticising every game without any ideas of what the hell they're talking about.

I also have to agree that Hinorubu Sakaguchi was THE BEST DEVELOPER EVER to grace the RPG industry!!!!

Square Enix brings us great graphics, great story, and great gameplay. Basically I'd like to have EA write a best selling novel while they make their game so they know what that aspect of games is like. Square Enix has more to do on its plate than just reuse and touch up on what they used in their last game. If EA was gone tomorrow... I wouldn't miss them.

Also, in the latest FF, i dont see anymore akward movements, yet there are tons of monsters and creatures that dont exist in this world. Man, the ability to make unreal creatures animate fluidly already puts the animators in those studios better than just motion capturing.

I see about as much realism in Hot Shot Golf as in Tiger Woods.
Also if EA ever makes a game half as beautiful as a FF game then I'll crap my knickers and think the world has truly come to an end.
Stick with sports fat-head and leave fantasy to the professionals.
Thank goodness Square dropped EA when it partnered with Enix.

Well, this was obviously the non-story of the week. EA are arrogant bastards, we already knew that. We also know Final Fantasy isn't really striving for realism per se.
Reply
But his point is motion is as important as polygon count and textures.
He's right , quit being idiots.

3. a mental image, esp. when unreal or fantastic; vision: a nightmare fantasy.
why do they want to focus on making look realist? ITS A FANTASY GAME and I hope they will keep it that way.

On that note, EA reps need to stop criticizing everything and improve on their own games.

EA is one of the worst company, with an ultimate lack of imagination. They almost only do sports game, wich is easy, you just have to upgrade the graphics in terms of "copying the human body".
EA, glenn entis, please kill yourself fo being so an imbecile who said openly that he hate art for being "unrealistic".
What sort of imbeciles could say something like that.. It's because of this kind of limited-mind that video games are not fully accepted as art...

Final fantasy is one hell of a game even with shocking graphix.
Who gives a damn about graphix if the game is poor ???

Seriously, why are these boobs appearing to talk about games that aren't in direct competition with them--cause you know, EA can't buy out what doesn't exist i.e., imagination-- maybe if they would spend more time fixing bugs in half-baked ports than giving speeches about what others should work on.
It's great seeing someone making Sony mistakes, but unlike Sony, we all got something in common to hate on. Screw it up yer ass EA, your name is officially "Electronic Ass".

Ok, let me get this straight. EA, is saying that the future is in REALISTIC games? Like in their sports titles? Ok, so if realistic games are to be the future and/or are the best, does that mean that all these games are wrong?;
-Zelda
-Mario
-Final Fantasy
-Fable
-Devil May Cry
-Kirby
-DBZ
-Pokémon
-Katamari
... everything that isn't EA
Ok, that's it, why won't EA just shut up? I mean, I've seen Cliffy B say he admired Kojima, I've seen Kojima say he liked Miyamoto, I've seen countless game developpers say that they inspired themselves of others, and THAT makes good games. The industry doesn't need a bunch of smart ass wanna be's to dictate what's good and what's not. really EA check the ratings of your games and see how much you suck for yourself. Seriously NHL 07 was my last purchase of you, you stupid retards. I advice everyone to skip their titles too. (not only because they are arrogant and stupid but because they take your money for *****ty products and then fire their employees.)

For the franchise, motion capturing may work well in movies, but in a video game, where many options are availible, motion capturing doesnt work as well as custom animation that works well in all areas. EA seriously isnt that great of a company, though they do pump out a few good games once in a while.

Thank you for starting a flame war. I am a Final Fantasy fan, so I know that Entis' comments are about FINAL FANTASY: The Spirits Within, not all Final Fantasy games in general. If you take that into consideration his words have some truth to it. But since you did not make that clear, you started a flame war for no reason.
Thanks a lot to the retarded readers of qj that could not notice this, and props to Stikz for noticing.
Sincerely,

id like him to name one EA game that looks better or even has better gameplay than FF.....

maybe make some better games than tiger woods lol

Not to mention the dunking through the backboard or the ben wallace jumping 15 feet to block a shot. I don't think EA's motion capture is top notch in that respect. The motion of a reciever catching a ball pales in comparison to the motion of that reciever doing an end zone dance. It's pretty pathetic in my opinion.

One of these problems, Entis explained, is that it's hard to believe in a character that looks extremely lifelike if they don't move and behave in realistic ways.
"In Final Fantasy, the modelling fidelity was really better than the motion fidelity," he argued. "In other words, when you looked at the models, they signalled an expectation to the audience that the motion couldn't deliver upon."
When this situation occurs, Entis believes, "You basically expect a level of life that isn't there and the character, in relative terms, feels dead."

I attended the presentation, and the FF reference was directed towards the first movie, not the game.
Yes the rendering was fantastic - ahead of everything!, but compared to the emotional response given by the characters motion... Yes there was a mismatch. The graphics were too good!
Glenn seemed to be saying that you have to get the balance right, don't go too far in either direction.
Example... Conker on N64 was the absolute mutts, in contrast to the Xbox version, which was dressed up with the latest effects, shaders, etc... But there was no change to the animation, dynamics & particle motion, which kinda showed up against the fur rendered background. (Its was a bit clunky)
In that light, I don't think he was wrong...
So fan boys, chill out. FF7 is still the king!

Picking a fight with Square Enix just isn't smart. EA has NOTHING that can compete with even the *****tiest of Square/Enix's endeavors. They definitely cannot match FF-12, let me tell you it is sheer awesomeness.
Are EA american execs just pissed the Japaneese can constantly rise the bar of quality in their games while also employing artistic creativity? Well if they are they should stop whining and find more ways to improve their products to be an honorable challenger.
This man obivously has no poise or tact. SquareEnix is the "Disney" of the east. He's like a whimpy intern trying to exchange blows with a seasoned samurai.
