GDC 2009: Ubisoft eyes Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell as potential movies

Prince of Persia movie - Image 1 It won't be the first time if we found out that more Ubisoft's IPs are gonna hit the big screen. For instance, Far Cry and Prince of Persia have already gone Hollywood. This time, the publisher is eyeing two more franchises to hand over for movie directors to play with - Assassin's Creed, and Splinter Cell.

Gamespot managed to get a few words from some Ubisoft brass and talked about the growing film-game convergence. Among them was Yannis Mallat, CEO of Ubisoft Montreal, who reveals that the "long-term goal is to have movie and game people [at Ubisoft] talk to each other in real time. That's happening already...and those filmmaking tools and processes will help us make better games." He added that Assassin's Creed and Splinter Cell are prospects for such projects.

An interesting thought. Games-turned movies aren't known for their OMFGBBQFTW quality, and games spawned from movies are just as lackluster. But here we have Ubisoft wanting to work closely with movie producers and directors, share input, and come up with both great movies and games. While it's true that there's cynicism we have for the games-into-movies concept, it's just because we want to see our favorite games play out well on the silver screen.

DON'T DO IT. I doubt that I was the only one gritting my teeth or putting on headphones just to get through the god awful excuse Assassin's creed had for a story line. There is NOTHING there to even make a movie out of, the story was that stupid. The only thing that saved that game from utter failure was the okay gameplay.

Assassin's Creed was an unremarkable game and likely make a crap movie. I got that game with my PS3 and sold it a couple weeks later.

Splinter Cell I got no real opinion on. Haven't played any since the very first one which I apparently found so unmemorable I can't recall a single thing about it.
