GDC 2008: Mario Kart Wii Channel confirmed, Baby Peach playable after all, and more info |
Ó

At the 2008 Game Developers Conference, Nintendo has finally revealed more information for Mario Kart Wii, the latest incarnation of the Mario Kart series. The info include details on gameplay, available characters, and playable race tracks.
Choose your character
Last month, Nintendo halted the spreading rumor that Baby Peach and Boo would be playable characters in Mario Kart Wii by saying they never released this information. However, half of that rumor turned out to be true as Baby Peach will indeed be a driver.
The available racers at the start of the game are Baby Mario, Baby Peach, Toad, Koopa, Mario, Luigi, Yoshi, Princess Peach, Wario, Waluigi, Donkey Kong, and Bowser. Unlockable players you ask? We won't be at all surprised, looking back at Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
In Mario Kart Wii, each racer will now have three karts and three bikes available to them. the difference between vehicles lie in their maneuverability: bikes have a harder time turning but are easier to boost than karts, which would need powerslides.
The CC classes are back!
The CC classes will also be present in this latest Mario Kart game, but taking the new diverse set of vehicles in consideration. The 50CC bracket is for karts only, while the 100CC is only for bikes. The 150CC class mixes both kinds of vehicles.
Online play will support up to 12 -players. What's more is that the Wii will now have a new Channel dedicated to Mario Kart. The channel will receive info on leaderboards and other info, and will be able to download tournaments and weekly challenges.
In with the old, in with the new
Doing stunts can give you boosts. You can do stunts while in mid-air after flying off a ramp. Nintendo also re-confirmed that gamers will be able to race with their Mii. The game will have eight new tracks and eight classic tracks available.
The eight classic tracks come from past incarnations of Mario Kart. The classic tracks are: Peach Beach, Waluigi Stadium, Yoshi Falls, Delfino Square, Mario Raceway, Sherbet Land, Shy Guy Beach, and Ghost Valley 2.
The eight new tracks available in Mario Kart Wii are: Luigi Circuit, Moo Moo Meadows, Mushroom Gorge, Toad's Factory, Mario Circuit, Coconut Mall, DK Summit, and Wario's Gold Mine.
And that's it for Mario Kart Wii from GDC 2008. Mario Kart Wii is expected to be released this April. We'll keep you posted on updates!
