GDC: Valve's Lombardi on no PS3 Left 4 Dead, in-house games for Wii - Image 1

In an interview with Videogaming247, Valve corporation's Doug Lombardi was able to talk about why they don't have plans of releasing Left 4 Dead (Xbox 360, PC) for the Sony's Playstation 3. Apart from this, he also delved into why, if they wanted to make in-house games for another console, it would be Nintendo's Wii platform.

Lombardi mentioned a few reasons on why they they won't be releasing the game for the PlayStation 3. Although they were able to do it before,  Lombardi said, "We were really crappy at bringing games to consoles." Even if they moved up on simultaneously producing games for the Xbox 360 and PC, they had limited interest in developing for PlayStation 3.

With developing games both for consoles and the PC, Lombardi noted that if they were to developed in-house games for a console system, it would be Nintendo's Wii. In fact, he said:

If Valve were to develop in-house for another format, it would be the Wii. ItÂ’s growing, thereÂ’s already a huge user-base, and itÂ’s fun. Source is really scaleable. We can do that.

Well, with that said, keep your eyes glued to our site for more developments regarding Valve Corporation and their projects.

» Doug Lombardi is as big an idiot as Gabe Newell

And due to his arrogance and poor choice in consoles I won't be getting his game. I prefer buying games for a system I'm not afraid of spontaneous death

I know I've been saying this lots lately on this site BUT, why troll? You may say you're not trolling but then you go ahead and bash the 360 (and it's owners)

It's not impossible to make your opinion heard without bashing other peoples decisions and opinions..and yes, I know the 360 has it's fair share of fanboys as well

by Seoulfood - 2008-02-23 20:55
» agree with LordQuas431

Yea, it sucks that it won't be coming to PS3, and maybe Valve people seem to be acting like jerks, but there's no reason to diss the 360.

» Relax guys

Maybe he was just blowing off Steam...

Get it?

HA!

» Hmmm

It's about time you grew up Techni. :|

» *sigh*

I am really disappointed in them...

Does this mean no Portal 2 for us?

by Ash735 - 2008-02-24 05:14
» Valve

Can't handle the PS3's Steam. Sorry that was a terrible joke.

by Techni - 2008-02-24 07:50
» I'm not trolling.

I was dead serious when I said I'm afraid of using the 360, it prevents me from getting the 3, 5 and 7 day survivor achievements in Dead Rising, and prevents me from getting all but the must-have exclusives. And Live prevents me from getting any game with online multiplayer, there is no sense paying for an inferior service (PSNs dedicated servers gives better in-game performance than Live's peer to peer, and in-game performance is what counts)

So unless a game has Halo, Fable, MechAssault, etc in the title, I buy for PS3 or not at all.

Plus his company already hurt itself with the piss-poor release of Orange Box on PS3.

by Lifeline - 2008-02-24 07:52
» tut tut tut..

I always thought quite highly of Valve when I was a PC nut, but then the PS3 arrive's and unlike other devs. all they advertise, is the arrogant and lazy manor in how they develop. Still it's up to them what platforms they support after all, but it just goes to show that they prefer the safe and easy platforms, over the more challenging and perhaps more rewarding PS3.

by Someone_PR - 2008-02-24 08:30
» well...

Every developer need to realize that ps3 sell games now... it's even if not more than the 360 in some game.. look at burnout or devil may cry... even with 7 millions of consoles behind.. that means... the ps3 sell games... just need to develop it like the 360 or better... the PS family don't buy game if the other console is better by far...

by Yaz - 2008-02-24 08:38
» Yeah sure...

Moving on

What steam? At least we don't need a power brick that's bigger than the actual console, and we don't have to worry about our houses catching on fire anytime soon due to horrible systems like the 360.

Bash my system, I bash yours.

by Naroon Kasui - 2008-02-24 10:07
» now...

The PS3 has caught up and still is catching up, and it's pwning right now.

This pair of lazy, arrogant douchebags, Doug and Gabe, need to go get shot. They just come up with excuses on why they suck at developing on PS3. Hey everybody, remember INFINITY WARD? The guys who developed COD4 on PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 with NO PROBLEMS AT ALL?

Take a *****ing hint, fat asses. [Valve]

by Yaz - 2008-02-24 10:54
» Oh please

"Doug and Gabe, need to go get shot."

And you need to grow up. Childish and ignorant rants will get you nowhere.

by xicor - 2008-02-24 12:23
» Xbox 360

Yes, and in the process of bashing the Xbox 360, you are giving Microsoft more attention and hence more money and power.

It's a set up I'm telling you. A SET UP. Bashing the system only gives it more power.

2 words, Time and Money

"Riding their *****s will get you nowhere as well."

you would know, wouldn't you?

by Master Chef - 2008-02-24 19:04
» That's your problem Techni, not the 360's

You should only be afraid of playing it if A. you're an idiot or B. you don't have a warranty because of A.

I've had my unit since launch, I have all the survivor Achievements and quite a few other Achievs which take awhile to unlock, played all the exclusives and a bunch of multiplatform titles to death (400+ hours in Oblivion) and my console still runs great.

And neither would acting like a foul mouthed coward online due to being anonymous (i.e. big month when online, spineless in person).

So do continue with your insults, since it's to be expected from people like you who are VERY weak and immature and therefore use the internet to attempt to boost your ego.

» @ yaz

you don't even own any of the next gen consoles!!

so you therefore havent got an opinion worth bothering with!!!

i have seen you on other sites speiling out your so-called wisdom, maybe you should go back to them instead of trolling here!!!

by Yaz - 2008-02-25 00:24
» And as I've told you before...

...please cut the childish "you don't even own the consoles" nonsense and grow up.

The fact that I don't YET own a 360 or PS3 is information which I've given here MANY times already (unlike some who pretend to own consoles they don't), however for the topics I've participated in, it does NOT require that I own one or more of the consoles to offer an opinion on it, and owning a console does NOT make a gamer understand the technology btw.

So if you don't like my comments based upon such foolish reasons, then that's tough kid, there's nothing you can do about. Instead, try acting like an adult for a change by offering an intelligent rebutal to any of my comments you disagree with.

by Yaz - 2008-02-25 01:30
» BTW, you said exactly the same nonsense here!

http://www.qj.net/Guerilla-Games-admits-Killzone-2-screens-had-photo-touch-ups/pg/49/aid/109329

I suggest you read my response back then to you, and then follow the discussion I had with Koolaidsred1 (who called me an idiot at first) to see how two people can disagree and yet STILL have an adult conversation, even to the point of finding that we actually agree on certain points.

I seem to recall we've also had a few decent discussions at times after disagreeing at first (read it all);

http://www.qj.net/Uncharted-Drake-s-Fortune-why-it-s-only-possible-on-the-PlayStation-3/pg/49/aid/106419

It's shame you now choose to use the fact that I don't own a 360/PS3 as an excuse to dismiss anything I have to say. :|

by deadlockedgamer2 - 2008-02-25 04:54
» This sucks

I am pretty sure the reason Sony announced the free dev tool to covert any game developed on any platform to ps3 360 and so on. At least if I read the artical right. I think they just don't A. No about this tool B. Don't like Sony and if A and not B, they can't get used to having to process everything at the same time in real time. By the way I have a ps3 in my living room.

by Yaz - 2008-02-25 05:35
» Not quite deadlockedgamer2

Sony recently announced their free multi-format graphics engine PhyreEngine, where a simple recompile will allow the game to run on the PS3 (very useful).

In otherwords, devs more familiar with the PC can develop a game using PhyreEngine on the PC (using all the tools they're familiar with), and then recompile the game to run on the PS3 later.

There's no tool to convert games running on other game engines in the way you've described. :|

» not at all yaz!!

you've got a good memory by the way!!

but, i don't like the way you come out with the holier than thou comments you make! i mean, come on, im sure Naroon Kasui didn't mean shooting them literally!!

and i agree with him, they are lazy if they are coming out with this stuff, and as we are both ps3 owners, then why shouldn't we think this?

but im man enough to apologise for the quip about you not having a next gen console!!

by Yaz - 2008-02-25 09:05
» OK, that's better :)

"you've got a good memory by the way!!"

Yep, although it can be a curse sometimes. ;)

"but, i don't like the way you come out with the holier than thou comments you make!"

I think I only come across that way to you because you usually disagree with me. If you were in agreement, it really wouldn't bother you.

I understand technology extremely well, having worked in computing for just under 20 years, and therefore when I read something I know to be wrong, I will argue against it, providing proof to support my views. However, if I am proven wrong, then my full respect and thanks always goes out to that person, because I would have learned something from the discussion (in fact, that's when I enjoy forums the most!).

So I just speak the truth as I see it, no hidden agendas, no trolling, baiting etc, just the facts, and since I have neither 360 or PS3, I have no interest in supporting one over the other. So whether it's someone saying Blu-ray is not needed or the PS3 has no games, or someone saying the 360 is crippled by DVD or it's maxed out by GeOW etc, or making inappropriate comments (racist, anti-American, threats, lies etc), then I will come in and challenge them directly. :)

*End of essay*

"i mean, come on, im sure Naroon Kasui didn't mean shooting them literally!!"

Of course, but would you feel the same if a gamer made similar comments about Phil Harrison or Kaz Hirai deserving to get shot, or even if they said *you* should be shot? I seriously doubt it 'the by'. Hence such statements are not fine just because you agree with them in general and only wrong when you disagree with them. It's just wrong, period!

"but im man enough to apologise for the quip about you not having a next gen console!!"

Apology accepted.

Let's wipe the slate clean. Agreed? :)

Still, I expect to have both consoles soon enough (I intend to purchase both at the same time and from the same place when ready).

that xbox live had peer to peer only. Pay, peer to peer only?

» i was jus lik u

new pc, played thru HL1,2,episode1 before gettin a PS3 and was also excited to hear bout the episode2 to be released on PS3!

Really ff*cked me off

» @Yaz(after checking ur link)

uncharted doesnt actually dump data in HDD to improve load times.

Infact, there is no load times from gameplay to cutscence then to gameplay.

It streams directly from Bluray. According to desperate ppl, a slow BD 2x drive is useless unless it duplicates data on disc and dumps data in HDD.

At the end, its all about the quality of the game, so hopefully, BD "issues" isnt bothering u now.

by na2rul - 2008-02-26 02:48
» K apparently Yaz has no consoles

But i still cant get it off my mind that ur 360 fan

by Yaz - 2008-02-26 11:59
» And?

"uncharted doesnt actually dump data in HDD to improve load times."

Yes and? Where in that link did I say it would?

"According to desperate ppl, a slow BD 2x drive is useless unless it duplicates data on disc and dumps data in HDD."

Fine, so go take that arguement to THOSE people!

Blu-ray in the PS3 is slower than the DVD drive in the 360, that doesn't make the drive slow, it just makes the drive sloWER in comparison.

"At the end, its all about the quality of the game, so hopefully, BD "issues" isnt bothering u now."

What are you talking about? Blu-ray issues NEVER bothered me in the first place. What 'bothered' me were idiots in that topic going on about how Uncharted would not be possible on the 360. I present the facts, which fanboys (on both sides) refuse to accept because they are too busy defending their consoles like substitute girlfriends.

In case you didn't notice, my first post in that topic was defending the PS3 against the claim that it couldn't run Mass Effect because BR was too slow. A fact you conveniently ignore I notice. I wonder why?

"But i still cant get it off my mind that ur 360 fan"

Yes, I am a 360 fan, I'm also a PS3 fan, in fact I'm a console fan (although Wii doesn't appeal to me).

So your problem is?

by Yaz - 2008-02-26 12:01
» Correction

"K apparently Yaz has no consoles"

No CURRENT gen consoles. I have last gen consoles and a PC for gaming.

So again, your problem is? :)
