GDC 08: Phil Harrison says developers can't appeal to the entire Wii crowd |
Ó
As most expected, the Game Developers Conference 2008 was graced by many high profile individuals from the gaming industry. This was most evident at David Perry's Lunch With the Luminaries which brought together Peter Molyneux, Phil Harrison, Chris Taylor, Raph Koster and Neil Young to discuss the games industry's future.
It was at this meeting that Phil Harrison, Sony's President of Worldwide Studios, pointed out that making Wii Games might not automatically be a ticket to success.
Harrison cited that the third party publishers have to face competition from Nintendo's games. He then pointed out that the "addressable market is only 40% of the installed base." Of course, this statement was met with some input from the other members of the panel.
Neil Young, the vice president and general manager of Electronic Arts Los Angeles, said that his company's video game Smarty Pants, which saw its first seeds of life at last year's GDC was "very easy to build very quickly." He further added that game development for the Wii seems "fundamentally much more fun... almost like Xbox Live Arcade [development] to some degree."
An interesting discussion altogether, with issues we've been hearing about and we're sure to hear about some more in the coming months. Be sure to keep checking back here at QJ.NET for your latest video game news and updates.
