Gays fight back against "gay stereotype" gaming article

Vaan of Final Fantasy XII - Image 1A few days ago, Games Radar published an article - "Five game characters with one foot in the closet" - naming Kratos from God of War, Marcus Fenix from Gears of War, Jimmy Hopkins from Bully, Frank West from Dead Rising and Vaan from Final Fantasy XII as members of the LGBT community. A bunch of you kids might think it's funny but some members of the gay community were offended by it.

Starting off is their supposition that Kratos may be gay because he "accidentaly" killed his wife and daughter, which may mean he's got a grudge against women, "or something." Hassan Mirza, Gay.com's news editor told GamesIndustry.biz that this particular suggestion is misinformed. Why would straight men think that gay men hold violent grudges against women, after all?

PinkNews.co.uk retaliates by publishing the offending Games Radar article with the question: "What is the point of "outing" characters? Is this yet another bunch of childish 'str8' boys laughing at gay people?"

Mirza further elaborates that the article's facetious tone, dismissive of an impressionable audience, justifies making jokes about the LGBT community. Another suggestive, and allegedly misinformed comment was about Frank West dressing up in woman's clothes and children's clothes for a bit of "carnal experimentation."

Gays want the gaming community to know that while it's reassuring that gamers actually care about the sexual orientation of their digital superheroes, it's not very reassuring to read that the gamers rely on juvenile stereotypes about the LGBT community.

It'll be very interesting to know what you guys would make of this sort of situation; feel free to comment below.

Surely the games radar article was just a laugh. The gay community do themselves no favours getting annoyed at something like this. The article was not homophobic and was just a bit of fun. Really laughing at yourself is ok people.

I mean honestly...I understand what stephenb5203 is on about, it was just a bit of phun but get ready for more comments like the above...

I don't think gays will ever be fully accepted by everyone just as women have to put up with comments like "Women can't drive" or "Girls, playing games? Bah come and play with my **ck" ect...

Women seem to be good at ignoring comments like these, they've been putting up with it for centuries, I think gays will just have to follow suit. You're never going to fully eradicate silly comments like these...

Just my opinion, even though it is a flawed one...

Children like Keef and that guy who wants to be Ludakris!! Lol You brain washed Yanks - you hate gays cos your poor Christian Mother told you it was wrong to be f*cked up the arse - Only because your Redneck father used to sodomise her, and your grandma in a very violent way. Then when he raped your arses you got all scared and started hating men who lust after other men. Life doesnt have to be like this!

Wake up!

Just cos your mum was raped it doesnt mean that men can't love each other - Anal sex doesnt have to be rape.

Ask my Girlfriend - she will tell you that it can be done gently (or ask my ex Boyf.....ooo does that annoy you?)

Well as horrifying as it is children, I am a gay gamer and am not offended in the slightest by this harmless bit of fun. At the end of the day, everyone is a bigot, racist or hater in some way even if it is just by a tiny amount. It is society programming us as we grow.

So say if you are a gay hater, it's only because your friends and possibly family have such an inherant fear of anything they don't understand that personal feelings about minorities become hateful and venemous.

I, to a degree don't like the majority of gay men, I find them mostly to be shallow, fake and incredibly promiscuous. I myself don't sleep around or frequent the throwaway and frankly cheap gay pubs and clubs, all of my friends are straight and I am happier socialising in mixed venues, my partner is the same.

There is good and bad in everyone, there will never be any kind of peace in this world as long as people are people. People just need to understand a little tolerance is all.

If I was even a little interested in the views of someone who believes that a Carpenter was the Son of God and flew out of the sky healing sick people with his hands then I would concede.

But - your opinion might be based on as much logical thought as "Keefs" really! Think about it - I dont know what you choose to believe but by trying to single out Keefs stupid comments from general Christian behavior you have opened a can of Worms.

Christians have for centuries spread hate and lies about loads of stuff - including men who like men. It is pointless really. Resistance to this fact is actually futile.

If you dumb enough to believe in flying carpenters (and even sing about them!) then your opinion has as much worth as Keefs. Which is as much as the tiny little fart that I just let out.

You might as well believe in anything!

Dragon slayer - do you consider your self a progressive Christian? i.e I believe in this book and all this other Speil but I am tolerant of gays as I believe Jesus taught me to love those who are commiting Sin and try to save them>?

Or are you a new age Christian who believes in the book but doesnt believe in some parts of it?

Or are you just confused and dont actually know?

LOL, that is totally your right.

Just as it is my right to believe that crazy Christians like yourself are delusional and weak-minded because the only thing you people can come up with to defend your belief in fantasy worlds is that someone or some book told you so. In my view, it's as valid as if I said "I believe in Narnia and Aslan is coming to rescue us!" Same exact thing, just one is more of a mass delusion for people who can't come up with their own reasons to live life and need a fantasy to cope.

So you don't like what gays "do", huh? You spend enough time thinking about what men do in their bedrooms to draw that conclusion as to what they "do"? Let me guess, you've even got a few magazines that illustrate it, huh?

The truth is, the only weird thing is that you care. If what men do with each other in the bedroom is so interesting to you, then perhaps you have more issues than we thought.

Such a ridiculous way of looking at it. "You Christians hate gays because you're brainwashed?" Take a freakin' look at the world: EVERYBODY IS BRAINWASHED!! You've been brainwashed with the idea that we're supposed to be tolerant of everybody's differences; the more obscene and wrong those differences the better.

When it comes down to it, the ideas of men are always limited and changing. Why? Because we simply have too limited a perspective. Thus, rather than be brainwashed by these foolish notions that will no doubt be exchanged for new equally foolish notions within a decade, I choose to be brainwashed by a higher power: one that has been constant throughout history. So, while I definately don't condone homosexuality, and I would prefer that much of our "progress" in tolerating it be turned back (no gays in the military, no gay teachers, etc.) I believe in a "love the sinner, hate the sin" approach. I work with a few gays, who, though I don't consider them friends, I treat them just as I would anybody else. Does that make me one of your "poor deluded Christian Yanks?"

by Koru-Kun - 2007-02-22 05:05
» use proper terminology

homophobic does NOT mean what you think it means. A phobia is an intense fear of something, and i highly doubt criticizing somebody that doesn't like to be around or simply doesn't approve of homosexuality by labeling them as having a "fear of gays". If you must criticize them, don't call them homophobic... just say anti-gay or anti-homosexual.

Oh, btw.... I'm a right wing Christian ^_^ and guess what, i have no problem with homosexuals who are "celibate". I have problems with homosexual acts, not the classification one gives themselves.

I suppose you've "come up with your own reason to live." How very enlightened of you.

I'm a fairly intelligent person. I used to be a bit of an intellectual. I'd look at an issue and process it logically and rationally. To some degree this works. Where it breaks down is when you realize that we human beings are ridiculously limited in our capacities for logical analysis.

First, let's assume you've got some insanely high IQ. Let us also assume you've attained a level of discipline so as to be completely unaffected by emotion (love, lust, anger, envy... anything that gets in the way of being rational), unaffected by physical limitations (being tired, hormones, that bad pastrami you had for dinner) and you're just plain an all around rational person. Let's also assume you're well educated; you have an extremely good grasp on the facts of the world around you. I would still put more faith in an uneducated country bumpkin Christian's "reason to live" or what have you, than in your all intelligent, completly rational insight.

Why? First, there's no way you're going to be completely rational. That bad pastrami or your envy of your neighbor or something is going to be affecting your insights. Are you bashing Christians 'cuz your Christian daddy raped your bum?

Second, there is not anybody alive today whose grasp on the facts of the world around him or her is more than dubious.... at best. Most of what you "know" was told to you by someone else (another limited human being). There's simply too much information for you to test everything yourself. Your information is secondhand (from imperfect human beings) making it somewhat unreliable. Also, much of that information is based upon man's "best guess" given the evidence. Remember when man's "best guess" was that the world was flat?

So yeah. Come up with your own reason to live or whatever. I'll put my trust in God for my reason.

» Congratulations to the champion of logic

For somebody so rational, you seem to be throwing a lot of anger into your debate. This alone undermines your position; a logical minded person wouldn't need to be so insulting.

As for your burning bush comment, I suppose that I do have to concede that the notion that the entire universe starting from an infinitely small, yet infinitely massive point going "Bang" followed by the formation of planets, stars, galaxies, etc. due to mere chance.... is MUCH more logical than a god who can make a bush appear to burn. I mean, how could he possibly make a bush appear to burn? That's just silly.

**note: since you can't hear the inflection in my voice, let me just tell you that was meant to be ironic.

It seems to me that those who would like to dismiss "flying carpenters" and burning bushes as a "mass delusion" do it less out of rationale, and more out of a desire to live their lives in a way that isn't in harmony with that carpenter's teachings.

» Clarification For Anyone Who Cares: If not, don't flame

The Bible doesn't say that 'being gay is wrong'. People are often born gay, and they are not born into a sin from which they cannot escape... Practicing a homosexual lifestyle is considered wrong because the sexual acts yield no fruit--no different from heterosexual activities in many and most cases. Many Christians look down on contraceptives, oral, and everything less than married couples having pure sex to bear children. It isn't some hate against gays, it could be (and more often is) against straight people as well. The Bible deals with basic morality in regard to your lifestyle, not your orientation. I'm a theology minor at the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, but I am Christian as well. I'm not flaming anyone here who leads their 'own' lifestyle, I'm just pointing this out to correct an earlier post. Thanks.

"The only wisdom consists of knowing that you know nothing" --Socrates (quoted as best as my memory allows).

An ancient greek philosopher making the exact point that I've been making all along. Quite simply, we are far from perfect, therefore our ideas are going to be far from perfect.

What you apparently see as closed mindedness on my part is actually me being even more open minded. Not only am I willing to learn, but I am also willing to unlearn. I accept that much of what I "know" may turn out to be incorrect. I learn. Then I take what I learn and measure it against my religion. You could say that Christianity is an anchor to keep me from getting lost in the chaos that is "modern thought." No matter how much the world changes around me; no matter how much I learn; there are some things that will always remain true and I will cling to them unceasingly.

If you call that ignorance; if you'd rather be adrift, easily influenced by the world or popular opinion; then you're a fool.

This is the first time I've been disgusted enough by the childish bickering on here to comment. Simple message for you:

Grow up.

You don't like gays? Well, I'd get off the internet! They're everywhere around here!

Like gays? Stay away from a topic you should have known to be full of discriminatory bull*****.

Talking about discriminatory, what's with the Christian bashing? You guys never heard of "live and let live". Just back the hell away from the conversation, and pretend, just for one moment, that your view on life might not be universally applicable.

B) All the negative press gaming gets, dont you think comments like "WHY WONT THEY ALL JUST DIE?" are bound to keep these going. Fair enough, you might not be gay, and you might not think it's for you, but it doesnt mean it's wrong or that other people arent entitled to make their own decisions. Think before posting. The only person you impress by posting ***** like "I HATE GAYS" is yourself. are you guys serious?? ive never posted here before but im shocked at some of the closed minded childish comments being made. Not just againts gay people, but christians, and women too.

Gay people in general love to make fun of themselves, dont take things to seriously at all but when articles like this appear online it gives more ammo for closed minded individuals to use which isnt good. Again, making a compliant against the article probably wasnt the best move as i can see it was done in gest, a simple bit of fun.

As a gay guy myself I personally dont see the problem with the article, it wasnt offensive in any way, in fact i found it quite funny. Some people read far to much into it and they need to take a breath before passing judgement on it.

And on a side note, with all the crap going on in the world right now with wars, crime, poverty, etc etc, i cant believe people would still be so bigoted against any minority group. Its childish, closed minded and immature. If you dont like gay people, thats your decision and no one has the right to attempt to change your mind, but you also dont have the right to make disgusting comments like i hope they all die and i hate gays. Think before you speak, comments can be hurtful and do a lot more damage than you think.

» You proved my point exactly

"Second, there is not anybody alive today whose grasp on the facts of the world around him or her is more than dubious.... at best. Most of what you "know" was told to you by someone else (another limited human being). There's simply too much information for you to test everything yourself. Your information is secondhand (from imperfect human beings) making it somewhat unreliable. Also, much of that information is based upon man's "best guess" given the evidence. Remember when man's "best guess" was that the world was flat"

EXACTLY MY POINT, and exactly the reason I find organized religion a sham.

Religion was created by humans. Humans who thought they knew how God and the world works. The Bible was written by humans, edited by humans, changed by humans. Therefore, putting your beliefs into that is exactly what you are rallying against above.

Humans don't know any better - so some guys made up some stories that sounded good to them and others, and it makes people feel better to this day to believe that these incredible stories of virgin births, chemical impossibilities (wine into water), and flying carpenters, as the previous poster so eloquently put it.

I find it sad that people are so unhappy with their own lives that they choose to believe a group of stories to make themselves feel whole. I would never say I live a perfect life, but at least I live my life for myself and not based on stories written as propoganda.

There very well may be higher powers; in fact, I believe in them. But anyone that falls for organized religion as "fact" is just retarded, plain and simple. You believe stories written by men were divine, because you cannot come up with your own reason for being alive. It is a crutch, so you don't have to face the realities of mortality and the percieved inconsequence of mortal life.

Or you can believe in fairy tales that tell you if you obey some big man in the sky you will live forever in bliss, and bask in his love. However, if you don't, you will burn in hell. But remember...he still loves you. LOL.

Sorry man, you can be a spiritual person without being a crazy Christian. But it's not just Christian - any organized religion has the same principles - and it's all bull***** because any human that pretends to know the answers of the universe is wrong, exactly as you stated : and since religion was invented by man (and has been the leading cause of death among the human race since the concept was created) it therefore is faulty.

The truth is : no one knows the truth. Some people are evolved enough as beings to accept that as a part of life. Others turn to crutches because they can't handle that essential truth.

Nasty without witty is just floppy.

Just for kicks let's throw another stereotype into the mix.

Why would the author of this article think his readers would find it funny? It has a distinctly neanderthal flavour to it. In fact I can't imagine it having very broad appeal. It's almost as if... as if...

... the author is appealing to the stereotype that gamers are primarily men. Primarily unattractive men who can't get women so the only way they can feel better than other men is to appeal to outdated stereotypes and call them gay.

Cos the only men on the planet less capable of picking up a hot babe are the gay ones... Though we probably end up spending more time with hot babes precisely because we're not always trying to get into their pants.

On the whole, it doesn't speak well of what the author thinks of his readers, really.

Well! You have just created a SHINING example of PURE stupidity for me to comment on :)

I thank you - yet I also appeal to you to free yourself from all your preconcieved idea's.

I tell you as a matter of FACT you do not know God.

In fact you dont even have a clue what God is

- you just say "god" when in your mind you mean so much more. It is probably a safe bet for you - allowing your self the freedom to contemplate infinity is beyond your capacity. For many people it would mean an end to their daily lives as reaching any form of enlightenment would mean letting go of most social habbits - this it is not compatible with current society which has been built out of a monotheistic state. It can also be a mental burden.

The mental paths which your thoughts must tread which tell you that this is not true - the ones which allow you the audacity to claim that through a very restricted and shallow book you have personal contact with the Universe is actually a mental deficiency.

I could never trust you 100% about anything as you allow your self to be so easily fooled.

I don't deny - I have personal feelings and spirituality - the deep unfathomed depths of conciousness which confuse us are at present unintelligible and pointless to try and define - you can only try to work with what you have. People who accept truth take what they encounter and deal with it. I believe what I see and hear - not tales of flying carpenters and burning Bush's.

I believe that for humans to "live in harmony" (which they have never done - ever ever ever your Bible is so Full of crap -saying we were happy in Eden) we need to finally understand what personal interpretation of truth is and instill this in out children from birth.

A lie is a lie - for me to tell my child all the names for God and heaven and hell and then try to exlpain the unexplainable may make me feel more comfortable and it may help my child sleep easier but it is a PLAIN LIE.

You are therefor full of CRAP and you are at present far to scared to begin the path to semi-enlightenment (which is actually admitting you are not able to understand).

There are too many people in this world already. You should not be having Children and spreading your limited ability to discern truth.

Yeah, that's right...I've never read the Bible, I was just hoping I could comment on it and get lucky. You're missing the point. >>Do you honestly think that if you're born gay, you are doomed to Hell? Man on man IS wrong, but a gay that doesn't practice sexuality not. A gay relationship is a mockery of reproduction... No fruit can come of it, sexual acts are performed only for stimulation...But so is a relationship that focuses only on sex. Don't bash gays just because they are different. If you honestly believe gay relationships are wrong, maybe you should try and find out WHY you think that. The Bible doesn't just hate on random people, like you seem to think. God is love, right? I'm really not sure what Bible you're reading...

No, the bible didnt say a man should not lay with a man. It did say a men should not lay with a men that mean you shouldn't have sex with more than 1 man or woman and the Sodom and Gomorrah is not about homosexuality. It is about people who is like porn and dirty and sluts and perverts things like in our present world. Please read it carefully and God didnt say homosexual is wrong. Homosexual activity is a serious sin. It is contrary to the purposes of human sexuality (see Romans 1:24–32). It distorts loving relationships and prevents people from receiving the blessings that can be found in family life and the saving ordinances of the gospel.

» Yeshua Blesses me

Well,

I am baffled - how can my life have changed so quickly?

I had a dream last night and Yeshua came to me:

(Catholics decided his name was wrong so changed it to Jesus so it sounded better in songs)

He appeared to me as a Non-flying Carpenter and declared his name to me.

Yeshua.

"Why for many generations, have these people - who seems so concerned about knowing the name for God

and the places of heaven and hell - changed my name?

If all this naming was so important.......nay if all this classification of the unknown was so necesary to these people, why would they decide to change my name?"

I was shocked, mouth agape. I knew not what to say.

So I nodded

"Do they not know that by spreading this lie that they shall burn forever in hell fire? That they have damned themselves for eternity?"

At this point I was getting to the point of realisation when a dream is so real - that I was actually dreaming.

But he told me - he said, "No my young fellow, you are here to inherit the earth, you are not dreaming. Many of my followers on QJ.net dont even know my own name. They sing Songs written by King James the 3rd and say words like Halle juia, and talk of me being the actual "Son" of "GOD" - which have no bearing what so ever to my teachings in the name of Yeshua. I beg you, go and teach them how catholicism shows such a pure face yet is a cess pit of lies and arrogence.

Show them the way to learn "Real" history as kept by sane minded people who are only interested in the happiness and saftey of their fellow man without the need to dominate them and control their thoughts.

Ones who have no need to tell them 'HOW TO PREY'! Like they actually know!"

A light started shining above his head..and he carried on.

"Help them to free themselves from the organised diabolical sham that is the Archaic establishment of the Church. One which for so many years, in the name of "love" and "Peace" killed so many of creations children during crusades and witch hunts.

One which took control of monarchies and kingdoms, one which stripped all the truth that was to be found in the remnants of the Roman empire and removed the necessity to keep the;

***Church seperate from the State.***"

My dream world shook when he said those words, I felt them to the core of my being, deeper than anything I have ever known before.

THIS WAS THE WILL OF YESHUA!

When I awoke I laughed out loud at my stupid imagination. But looking to my bedside table - I saw a cross, not an ordinary cross. But a slightly misshapped one made not of Gold as is the Catholic custom, but of splintered wood. The cross was broken in the middle, snapped in two peices. A clean break.

On the cross was the word "Yeshua"

I have taken this cross to my ex-girlfriends mother who was a archeologist.

She laughed at me and told me I was on drugs, almost threatened to call the police when I got excited.

No one will believe me, or even take the time to review my evidence of epiphany.

I am now saving up to visit first Jerusalem and then the Vatican.

I will stop these desperate foragers from spreading lies about Yeshua once and for all.

I am his chosen servant and I apologise to all people whome I may have accused or insulted, my work is now to present his real intention to the world.

Honestly, let's get off the subject of race, religion, and even the topic of how disgustingly gross this all is to me, and the majority of heterosexuals out there (may not say it out loud, but trust me, they are thinking it). Now please understand where I am coming from..I don't HATE gays, I just think what they are doing is pretty messed up. Of course after I am done typing my statement, I will get some lame counterpoint on how I am wrong (always someone out there to argue w/ you)..but anyway, what I am really getting at is if you strip down Homosexuality to it's roots, what is it?..The answer my freinds is it it POINTLESS. The whole point, the reason we (humans exist on this planet is to carry on our genes. And if we can't do that, then WE ARE WORTHLESS to this society, and are living only for ourselves. And THAT, ladies and gentlemen, is tonight's word.

» Does it really matter?

Why should we even care positively or negatively about homosexuals and what they practice? What influence does it really have on you? I respect all Christians, Jews, and Muslims beliefs but I implore you to think about what the actual consequences that homosexuality has had on your life. Some people share different views on homosexuality than others (who may or may not be homosexuals) but should that really keep you from being friends or friendly with that person? On that same level, how do Christians, Jews, or Muslims beliefs really influence your life? Should that keep you from loving and caring for someone too? I could care less about someone’s sexual orientation or religion I care about people loving and supporting each other regardless. We may never be able to resolve our bickering and fighting, but we can do our best to make it less of what it could be by doing nothing.
