Gates rubbishes motion-sensing controllers

gatesMicrosoft's Xbox 360 is currently the only console from the three major gaming companies that doesn't have a motion-sensing controller. So what does Microsoft think of this? In an Interview with MTV news, Microsoft fat cat Bill Gates expressed his views on the motion-sensor movement.

Determined to save face, Gates rubbished motion-sensing controllers by saying that "it's something that's not mainstream for most games". He was quick to remind us that Microsoft did produce a Joystick, the 'SiderWinder Freestyle Pro 1.0' back in the 1990's, which featured motion-sensor technology and said "It's tough because sometimes you move the controller, and you don't [mean] to fly into the ground. You just want to put the controller down".

"Gaming is changing," he said. "We'll never leave behind the old genres. There will always be first-person shooters and football and those things, but we've got to complement that with lots of new ideas so that everybody feels like it's new and engaging for them."

After this Interview it looks like an Xbox 360 controller with a built-in motion-sensor is highly unlikely. With the head of Microsoft basically downplaying the technology, don't expect a Microsoft-made motion-sensing controller in the works for the near future. Xbox fans should cheer up though, as there is still a possibility of a controller with motion sensor technology being developed by a third party company. Watch this space.

# dont careGuest 2006-05-28 02:04
I personaly couldnt care less. I think it was low for Sony to rip Nintendo off like they did and I will get all my motion sencing needs in the future from my pre prdered Wii. For the record, I know that Nintendo did not invent motion sensors but I know that Sony only used the tech in their controller because Nintendo did.

to be honest i dont even WANT motion sensing technology, since i move around alot as it is while playing video games. plus i dont see where M.S.T. would come in handy for 90% of games anyways.

so you're going to dismiss something because your imagination cannot make it fly...lol

you're like the industry speculators who stated that the WORLD will only need 6 computers...EVER

Bill gates truly misses the point here.

The reason they failed is because the tech was still crappy back then. It was not a mainstream technology(just as he says) that everyone already had as a standard so hence, was there to exploit.

the thing is, that the technology is now going mainstream, and so the games now WILL exploit these features.

watch Wii games being played by people.

and similarly, read warhawk impressions(I do hope the guy who came out to demo warhawk gets fired....gave wrong impressions to so many people)

Bill said, "We'll never leave behind the old genres. There will always be first-person shooters and football and those things, "

riiiight.... THE only game that is keeping the xbox in industry is FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS like HALO and HALO 2 without it XBOX would see the same fate as Dreamcast.... lol... Microsoft can't leave behind the old genres cuzz that is the only source of income (gaming) they have...

There are plenty of other genres...and if you did a little research...you'd find the 360 is actually more expanded with genres then the xbox was.

Mass Effect Rpg for the 360(just like kotor 1 and 2 and Jade empire were for the xbox...not a fps is it wise guy?)

Fable 2( rpg for the 360...Fable was for the xbox. Rpg)

Blue Dragon for the 360...a Japanese RPG.

Lost Planet( a third person shotter from Japan)

Dead Rising(from Japan...capcom...zombie killing..umm...adventure?...whatever. Its not a FPS or sports game)

There are plenty more..but I don't want to make you look like an ignorant dumbass any longer.

Thats one of the reasons I dont want the PS3, I had one of those motion sensor sidewinders and the experience was crap !

All you need is a rumble..

"Gaming is changing," he said. "We'll never leave behind the old genres. There will always be first-person shooters and football and those things, but we've got to complement that with lots of new ideas so that everybody feels like it's new and engaging for them." Yes gaming is changing and motion sensing is one of the changes. So they did it poorly in 1990 with a joystick and now the Wii and PS3 will have it so "it's something that's not mainstream for most games." LOL Bill Gates, your'e not supporting it so it must be worthless. Thats ok people with Wii or PS3 will just have another thing to make their gaming experience better, and if you use your imagination you could see that it could be used for many types of games and that it doestn't have to be on all the time. Hideo Kojima said he would have you just shake the controller when you walked over a dead gaurd to pick up any items, so you see it can be used for subtle things like that too. All in all it will bring forth a better gaming experience so I don't see why Bill or anybody else would be against it.

# because...Guest 2006-05-28 08:12
as much as i think bill gates to be a douche bag, i slightly agree w/ him... to me, gaming is about laziness. If im playing video games, i want to exert the least amount of physical energy possible. Thats why i like controllers how they are: all I have to do is wiggle my thumbs and and index fingers, which i can do from bed no matter how beat up i am from skateboarding. If i wanted to swing something like a tennis raquet, i would go play some tennis, because its more fun in real life. Just because nintendo and sony would like to sell it to you, does not make it the future of gaming.

# fine with me thenTheDude 2006-05-28 09:51
If your'e to lazy to move your arms or to tilt or rotate a controller then don't. I'm not saying its the only way to go but personally I think a new twist on playing games is a good thing. It may not be for everyone and who knows it may suck as I've never played with a Wii mote or dualshock 3 but it offers something new and might just turn out to be the future of gaming whether you like it or not.

...Wii was built around this feature. From the ground up. Nintendo will do this right, you'll know what you're getting and im almost 100% sure ill enjoy most of my Wii gaming. PS3, on the other hand, kinda came into this late and really cheapened the whole effect.

Ive got a 360 and i love it. But i am very glad that it doesnt use the MST as i believe it would have the same cheapening effect as what the ps3 has done.

# microsoft not against motion sensingGuest 2006-05-28 10:12
"Gates did'nt say he was against motion sensing gaming." Only by stating the obvious, there are'nt enough games to support this tech. As a developer I have seen, many gimmicks that have drawn the attention of hardcore gamers."light guns, ect..." to only end up with a special feature, that can only be used for a select no.# of games. "We can only wait, and see if this feature will enhance gaming, or become another short lived addition."

I believe that too, tilt sensing is just a gimmick. the one and only thing it is good for is flying games... nothing else. so is the ps3 going to be the ultimate flight simulator?????

See what happens when you launch first without thinking...?

You have defend everything you didn't think to put in the console... Sony did it with the PS2 and now Microsoft is Defending their choices with the 360... fact is Some people may not like the motion-sensing technology but at least Sony gave consumers a choice and nintendo used it to enhance gameplay...

Rumble can only do so much...

And now will eDimensional on Sony's side.. The DS3 will be title sensitive and rumble.. the best of both worlds... sucks to be M$ at this time.

# we'll seeGuest 2006-05-28 14:10
We wont really to be able to really tell if MS will work is when it comes out. if Nintendo does it right thern it will be awesome. sony is a downright cheat because they stole that idea straight from nintendo. I own the 360 and i'am very happy with it. i will probably go out and get a wii. there is no reason why would I buy a ps3 for half a grand since all of the ps3 games our on the 360 now. ps3 has nothing since it lost its rights to GTA. PS3 is a great piece of hardware but if there are no gasmes who cares. so i agree with the Peter moore philosophy of Wii360. Thanks fellas and galsif there are any for listening to my thoughts.

# the thinking of peopleGuest 2006-05-28 14:22
gates is like alot of the other people in the united states. people like that are the reason the the us is so far behind in technology.

if people would come to accept that people want more than just the ordinary all the time then they would come out with new and better stuff.

at least at least nintendo and playstation goes al out to try and do more for the consumer or try to put more thought or features to something.

this is why i never liked ms, they always thought they were better and want to control evrything.

ms will never be the only game console, nor be the main system in anyones household.

# The next Xbox will have a similar one to the ps3.Guest 2006-05-28 15:37
Come on we all know that if it's not included is not supported. The sidewinder besides the fact that it was bad no game actually supported it. It more or less just replicated the functions of movement with a major delay unlike the PS3 one.

Howevers Nintendo's is a completely different animal and for sure will be a great time once you get those controllers in your hand. I hope all those controller features haven't made it heavy cause I dont want to get tired holding that thing up.

# dont hate, appreciateGuest 2006-05-28 16:21
am in the states, and just thinking about how the tilt will be used in games just gets me excited, think about playing madden and you swing the controller left to right very fast and that results in a studder step to juke the defender, or a game like the tourist trophy you can lean ur bike by tilting the remote, i mean its up to devs. to use their imagination on how to implement it. and for those that miss the rumble, there will be other controllers that will be out later from pelican, logitech and the others so in all i see nothing wrong with what sony and nintendo are doing,

ps: ms/nin/sony always has an excuse so its no surprise to see bill gates saying what his saying./

nintendo says graphics is not important because their hardware cant compete with the 360&ps3/

sony trying to justify the ps3's price because of the blu-ray player.(like the average consumer knows what a blu-ray is, all they are going to see is an over priced gaming console).

# Didnt think of adding it, so they downplay it.Vietone 2006-05-28 16:25
Motion sensing has alot of potential. There is virtually no delay on the PS3 controller. If you watched the demo while they demonstrated the movement sensing you could have easily seen there was a delay so small that it wouldnt affect how it worked.

Plenty of games can use motion sensing. racing games for one since many people still cant justify spending money on a wheel for a few racing games

Microsoft is only downplaying motion sensing because they wont have it. This has been a tactic that microsoft has been suing for years. But once the technology becomes mainstream they eventually accept it.

The Xbox360 will be the only system with no "real" next generation features. And upgraded Xbox is still an upgraded Xbox.

Microsoft is developing gesture recognition for games. This technology has so much delay between the recognition of movements that using it in games would be useless. I saw the video of the gesture tracking and its delay was much longer then the PS3 by a noticable amount. Its almost like playing a computer game on one of the first LCD screens that has high latency times.

Its easy to look at it and think "wow, I tilt the controller, and my character responds. Think of the possibilities!" But what people seem to ignore is, what about those times where you need to hold it steady? You find yourself in a situation, trying to line up the perfect shot, and then somehow your arm gets bumped. By a family member, a pet, or a mosquito bites you... Whatever happens, you jerk the controller and you possibly kill yourself (in game).

What about games where you really want to hold it steady often. How well can you hold a controller in its default "home" position? Sure, you may have a controller in your hand now, saying "its easy", but when you are completely focused on the game, you may suddenly find your character moving in a direction you had not intended, because your arms were getting tired, and you unconciously let the controller tip at a different angle.

Motion sensing controllers are a pain in the butt to play with, and the downsides will get irritating fast.

How unlikely is that every single person in the battlefield runs at exact same speed, has exact same size of body, has exact same clothings, exact same accuracy when holding a gun.(CS:S)

motion sensory controllers aren't the wave of the future. they've been around since the 90s and they've NEVER caught on. the ps3 controller will be awful especially since it's using the exact same decade old technology. the wii controller however will probably be praised since most of their games will utilize it. the 360 is perfectly fine the way it is, and will draw people to it simply because it's familiar.
