GameStop/EB Games Talk About PS3/Wii Pre-Orders

WiiAs many of you likely know, you still can't pre-order a PlayStation3 or a Wii at EB Games or GameStop. However, that just might change. We have two quotes by high-ranking officials at GameStop on the situation.

WeÂ’re looking at around a million units of PS3 in the US, which is somewhere around half or less than what Sony has said [would ship worldwide]. With the Wii, weÂ’re looking at around 750,000 in the US. We believe at this point, that could be a light number. ItÂ’s hard to say, though. We remain conservative until they actually show up at our warehouse. - David Carlson, executive VP and CFO, GameStop

WeÂ’re not going to take pre-orders until we have some more and clearer information from both Nintendo and Sony in terms of likely launch quantities for GameStop. We donÂ’t want to do what we did last year, which was to take way too many [pre-orders] on the 360, and then under-deliver. We want to get closer to keeping a promise to the consumer. WeÂ’ll know NintendoÂ’s [Wii launch numbers] before SonyÂ’s. - Dan DeMatteo, Vice chairman and COO, GameStop

They basically want to avoid the fiasco that happened with the Xbox 360 launch in which some who pre-ordered didn't get their systems until February. We really can't blame them. However, if you just can't wait, other stores have been taking pre-orders. Toys 'R Us Canada for example started PS3 and Wii pre-orders back in February. However, they might have too many people on their lists for you to feel comfortable. Remember, only about two million PS3s and Wiis will be shipped worldwide by Christmas Day. And that's when most people will want their systems.

» 1 million in the us... is that a lot?

what do numbers for other launches look like?

how many xboxes were shipped to the us on launch? (i say 'to the us' cos they were made in taiwan or something)

is this big or small?

less wii's, at lower prices... hmm... with more consumers wanting a wii (or at least that's what nintendo intend-(o)-s). perhaps those who can't get their hands on wii will want a ps3? or a 360? or neither?!

oh well, i can't wait for a global launch / ad campaign... i love good adverts and you know sony and nintendo won't let us down!

» actually...

i think people will put $50 down on a PS3 pre-order and then when they go to pick up their P(o)S3 and realize they could buy a wii with 3 extra controllers and all the games and most of the gamecube games they will change their mind and buy a wii instead.

moral of the story - if you want a wii pre-order, if you want a ps3 just walk in to any store that sells them and there they will be on the shelf looking pretty with ther $12,000 price tags

» pre order

i have all ready pre ordered a wii at ebgames on australia so it alll depends on the store you go to. the store i went to has never under order so far not even when the 360 came out.

» Why...

would u make such a stupid comment and say the PS3 will cost 12,000? Yea, we know its going to cost 500-600. Big deal. Don't get all butt hurt and overexaggerate for no reason. 600 isnt even alot. 360 was 400, and all that did was improve graphics.

BTW. i work at GameStop, and we get our first shipment of PS3 games on November 1, PS3 will be available on the 17, and when a customer asks, we tell them pre-orders will start sometime early October.

he may well be including a HD tv in the $12000 or he could just be overexagerating like you said.

All the PS3 does is only improve graphics too at an even higher prize.

» why?

Quick question? Why do people always pair up the PS3 with the Xbox360? The ps3 has alot more going on than a simple graphical upgrade. Plain and simple. It pushes hardware, the cell and bluray. Gives you the hdd standard, something MS forgot to do. Improves its online, to a possible xbl standard(wait to see on that). wii like functionality (distance with the cam, tilt with the controller). It may seem like slaps in your face when you look over what sony has done to take the competitive edge off their competitors, but intruth, who cares. Your getting everything besides: xb, wii exclusives, and a virtual console; and more. So at the chance of sounding fanboyish by posting this. Go out and do your research people and stop assuming *****, your making the world a *****ty place to live in and pulling down your entire species.
