WiiSpeak, Nintendo's new peripheral for the Wii - Image 1 WiiSpeak, Nintendo's new peripheral for the Wii - Image 2

E3 was a little skimpy this year, sure, but we did get a bone from Nintendo, who finally announced a Wii voice chat solution, WiiSpeak. So what are the games that will be using the mic? Not a lot, let me tell you. It's a new peripheral, what can you do.

The first game announced for the peripheral WiiSpeak was Animal Crossing: City Folk. To be honest with you I was a little let down, as I felt some games would have benefited from the peripheral more.

Thankfully, my prayers were answered. High Voltage Software's The Conduit was also revealed to use WiiSpeak during E3 week, which is a boon for the FPS game as its multiplayer mode will support up to 16 players at once.

There are also talks that the latest Call of Duty game, World at War, will also feature support for the peripheral - although for the life of me I can't find where this news originated. I hear it pitched around here and there, but I've yet to find a press release or read an official announcement from either Nintendo or Activision.

Still, everyone who does talk about it seem to be talking about it with confidence, so I'll just take it for granted until someone says otherwise. (And besides, I really want to believe it's true.) If any of you can direct me to the actual announcement, give a holler down at the comments.

There's not many games yet, but you forgetting about The Conduit Mister Common Sense? It's shaping up to be one of the best Wii games ever, and already looks close to a 360 title. That's pretty amazing for the Wii.

And Miyamota has said that most of the cost ($30) of WiiSpeak is because of the voice technology. Someone, I forgot who, that demoed it at E3 on IGN said the voice quality was remarkably clear and their voice could be hear even though they were far back, with many people behind them.

"Anyway, how can a microphone on top of the TV transmit voice that can be understood?"

Seriously? You claim to have graduated from the BEST Tech School around and you can't figure this out?

What do you think the PS3 camera does? That mic can pick up high end waves from 75 feet away (around walls)! Probably more and certainly much more straight on. That mic has NO PROBLEM picking up a voice from TV to couch.

Let me introduce you to the world of microphone arrays:

Go learn something then come back and TRY to have a normal conversation.

"I guess the microphone works only if there's little background noise."

What ignorance brought you to that conclusion? I even gave you a LINK so you could go educate yourself. What do you do with it? Absolutely nothing. You are a Class A Fool. Background noise is not a problem. IN FACT you can use the mic on the PS3 camera to sing with in rockband. Since I'm sure you know nothing about rockband....that game produces plenty of noise, foreground and background.

"That's s*itty. That, and it picks up what everyone in the room is saying. Wouldn't you kids be embarassed if your mom came in and said "ok, who wants cookies?" "

While I'm sure that happens to you ALL the time, most other people are not worried about it. The fact of the matter is, IT WORKS and IT WORKS form a distance. It works just fine with the PS3 so there is no reason it shouldn't work with the Wii.

"Who let these pre-pubescent kids in?"

So let yourself out.

"What was that about? A headset works much better than a ROOM MICROPHONE for multiplayer games."

As usual that's your OPINION and the majority doesn't seem to agree with you. That shouldn't surprise you as no one ever really does.

"Real next gen game consoles not catered to KIDS support it."

So now the PS3 isn't a real nextgen game console? I explained to you the PS3 works the same way and here you are throwing both the Wii and PS3 into the same "fake nextgen" category.

As was already said, you are a f*cktard.

# so the world can hear my whole familyfingahs 2008-07-23 22:30
that mic, may well be strong enough to pick up a voice even over background noise, but i dont like the idea of hearing mine and other peoples kids and arguements, aswell as telephone conversations including maybe credit card details of some guy ordering a pizza or something when playing a game, your personal inhouse conversations, and noise's are being broadcast to the world. hopefully someone will mod this to use a headset i'd buy one straight away so long as everyone else did. cuz nobody's gonna wanna hear my newborn screaming out for milk and my 6 year old asking over and over again for the same thing untill she get sternly told to go upstairs while my girlfriends washer and dryer are on the go, along with everbody else's home noise and feedback from the tv speakers. This could be horrid. On the otherhand it could be great if everyone in the family is playing wii sport's international multiplayer edition. (made up game, but would be good fun), but this is potentially very noisy and worst of all mostly unwanted noise.

@fingahs - Fair enough. However, PCs are the same way. So with with PCs, Wii and PS3 all on the same boat.... don't you think the majority is telling us something?

"So you want to hear (and have heard) everything that's going on in the room? When the kids are playing, do you want everyone to hear YOU arguing with YOUR ex? I guess you don't (and assume others) do not care at all about PRIVACY?"

What is your hang-up with privacy. You are in the middle of playing a VIDEO GAME, what the hell could possibly be going on? To answer your question, OBVIOUSLY no one cares as mics of these types fly off the shelves on a regular basis.

The mic is not on all the time. It's only on for input and a red light tells you when the mic is on and off.

"You have one and have performed a full product test, right?"

Yes you idiot. So have countless other people who accidentally left their camera plugged in and started ROCKBAND only to have it pick up the camera as a mic.

"No matter how much technology is supposedly in those things, background noise detracts from the sound quality. It is IMPOSSIBLE to detect voice as well as a headset."

Supposedly? HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! Of course background noise will degrade vocal quality. No one said it didn't fool. However, it is not impossible. You already proved to everyone that you don't even know what a mic array is. Yet here you are attempting to proclaim what is or is not impossible? stfu....

"Your whole life is a FAILURE. The failure continues..."

HAHAHAHA!!!!!!! !!!!

"These are different products by different makers. Sony typically uses the latest technology and Nintendo uses the CHEAPEST technology so they make huge profits. Your comparison is meaningless, as it's not even compared to a headset."

Obviously Nintendo would test the product before releasing it and mic arrays are the only way to get it to work. So yeah, everything I've said holds water and stands on it's own just fine. I'm comparing LIKE technology. YOUR ignorant comparison to a headset is moot.

"Again! When is your next comedy act? I have to see it!"

You're the one saying dumbass things? What kind of a response did you expect? Get over it.

"What suprises me is how your personal opinion is ALWAYS the majority."

Wrong again fool!!!!!! The thing is I comment with FACTS. I comment with opinions based on FACTS. I never lie so usually my comments will come out that way. I like my PC, PS3 and Wii. All three products are liked by the majority. So if I say anything positive about them then YES my comments will be shared by the majority.

Now, where exactly is it you are WRONG with this comment of yours? I dislike the 360 very much. It bit me in the ass too many times. Now, does the majority dislike the 360? NO!!!!!!! Thus, as usual, you are DEAD WRONG!!!!

"MY opinion is Common Sense"

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!

You're right. The PS3 camera is a failure and no one likes it.....your opinion is stupidity at best!

"which you have NONE. If you had common sense, you would realize your opinion is always the minority."

Always eh? So NO ONE likes PCs or the PS3 or the Wii????? Wow, you are true idiot.

"Real next gen consoles that are not catered to kids (you know, the Wii) support headsets."

Doesn't matter, the PS3 also supports array mics and you lumped it into the same category as the Wii. Your "stupid speak" just got you in trouble and here are backpedaling.

"I have a PS3 (actually 3 of them)"

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

"in many ways it's better than a 360. They are both REAL current gen consoles as the hardware wasn't recycled from past consoles. The have headsets with adjustable volume and mute, and DO work sooo much better than a Wii microphone ever could."

This is just you distracting from your last stupid remarks. What you say here has nothing to do with the conversation that was taking place. Take your bate and shove it. The headset doesn't work any better then the PS3 camera or any better then PC mics. With the exception of added privacy if that's what someone needs. Choice is the best option. The PS3 has choice, the 360 has NO CHOICE and the Wii will have no

The PS3 has choice, the 360 has NO CHOICE and the Wii will have no choice as well.

However, if someone is playing a Wii game that requires Mic input then I doubt there would be a family argument going on. Your narrow minded example are just plan pathetic.

"Just shut up, really. Remember what I said about retaining DIGNITY?"

Based on this article allow and how people have spoken to you....you have no dignity. So what exactly are you trying to teach me about it? How to lose it?
