Gameplay or graphics? A Call of Duty 3 comparison |

This is the reason why there are different consoles out. Not only do people have different tastes in gaming, but they choose their consoles as a result of these preferences.
Take this graphics comparison of Activision's Call of Duty 3 at the Destructoid blog for example. A casual eye, and perhaps many casual gamers or newcomers to gaming, would see little difference between one game and another. Graphics enthusiasts, on one hand will definitely see the difference, and will more than likely become fans of high-powered consoles because the gameplay and graphics add up to a great experience. On the other hand, gamers who don't mind a little less graphical awesomenss can get the same gameplay plus the innovation of the Wii's controller.
Imagine you had money to shell out for one or the other. The question becomes simple: gameplay or graphics? Which one matters more to you and your wallet in the long run, and where do you get your enjoyment from?
Whether you want the graphically-intense goodness of Xbox 360 (and PS3), or the gameplay antics (and innovations) of the Wii, what you get is something you've bought for the sake of enjoyment, and that's what matters. Happy gaming, and think about your future purchasing choices, so you never end up regretting the past.

As reguards to the graphics...i guess we need to see it in motion. If the game plays better with the wii remote and looks near to the graphics of the 360 i might be tempted...
If the wii remote does not offer that much for the game i might buy the 360 version. Roll on the video comparasons! :)
I know the wii verison sucks big time... but that tank and background... not ground... looks much better then the xbox360's.
I understand the comparison but is the Wii remote really that great of gameplay? No one from the public has played with the Wii enough to know if its something simple yet effective to play with or just a hassle. I'm not trying to bring the console down, but its kind of hard to say it provides the best gameplay when it's not even out yet. I say give time to all the consoles before these kinds of comparisons are given.

The textures on the Wii version suck! The tank itself is choppy. There is no comparision in realism!

They don't really look THAT different to me, to be honest.
Don't get me wrong, I see the inadequacies (thanks to the, uhm, text on the picture) of the Wii version, although there are some glaring differences that don't have to do with graphics at all (for example, the tank covers the treads in the Xbox360 version, but the treads are uncovered in the Wii version).
But to be quite honest, neither look authentic or realistic to me anyway. Having had a quite a few years of experience with 3d Programs, you tend to be able to see where the edges end and the bump mapping begins.
It just becomes the uncanny valley of realism.
Nintendo lover here, but we do need to be careful of assuming that cause the Wii has motion controls that it's a better game experience. I've seen the interview about all the Wii specific stuff and some of it does sound fun but other parts of it just seem like replacements for buttons. The thing for motion to work, isn't just that buttons are replaced with movements, nor is it just that new stuff is added that can't really be done with buttons, but it IS that whatever the controls are, they need to immerse us, and pull us into the game.
When designing Wii games, if the wazzy new control idea you have doesn't bring the player deeper into the game, then don't use it.

Okay, we know the Wii isn't as powerful as X360. But the fact that they display the terms "Gamecube 2" and "alas, thy textures suck" show outwards bias and immaturity.
I've seen an extended screener video of someone playing COD3 on Wii (sorry, no link - try searching youtube) and the graphics seemed fairly decent. And it took about 5 mins for the guy to start to get the hang of the controls, but once he did it seemed to control better than any console FPS I've played. I'll be waiting until both are released to see which one I prefer. But graphics always get outdated in 6 months, yet gameplay is forever

It actually all depends on which console i have first(surely i will be getting the Wii first) and if i have the 360 first i'll surely buy the 360 version. But apart from that i value gameplay over graphics and although i can see the differences i the two versions, it still doesnt put me in the mood to value one over the other(except in the "which one i own first" case).
More proof that Wii sucks. G4 already said COD 3 and that Marvel game were unplayable with the remote, and now this shows how inadequate the hardware really is.
And don't give me the "first generation game" crap either. Wii is a GameCube with little to no improvements what-so-ever. Wii launch games are the equivalent of six or seventh gen GC games. Don't expect any better graphics a year from now. In fact, you should all expect more dumbed down games like Wii Sports that try to hide the hardware flaws by using a simplistic (and down right childish) art direction and call it "gameplay over graphics."
Bottom line: Nintendo has all you fanboys fooled and they're going to steal your money come 11/19/06.
I really hope that all the people who want a Wii, doesn't want it for the multiplatform games. Because they are going to regret it. The wiimote will be use like a gimmick and from what i know, it's not accurate enough to use it for all the moves in a game.
I'm pretty sure that when we try the Wii, we will try to use the retromote for all the games.

It's not Graphics VS Gameplay unless the gameplay in the 360 version is total crap.
It's more a battle between Graphics and Choice of control. Because even with the uniquness of the Wii controller the two games could have the exact same game play.... just with different ways for user imput.

That and ill porbably get the wii and a xbox 360 just so i can play more of the games out there. the only ones on the ps3 that i want are any remake of ff7 annd armored core 4. thats not a good enough reason for me to buy one unless they have NO problems and the price goes down to what the x360 is. I do have other games like red steel and metroid and even zelda that i finaly don't have the limits of a anolog. i can quickly move the gun around,(faster than an anolog stic could.) slice at any anngle or as fast as i want.

Why is the only arugment the nintendo fanboys have is better gameplay? How do you know the gameplay is going to be any differnet than that of the xbox360's. Your going to be playing the same game just controls are going to be different. The only thing that Nintendo Fanboys or Supposedly non-fanboys run on about is that damn remote. Thats the only thing going for it right now. In 2-3 years people will look at the system in terms of graphics and said that its been done before(ex. Gamecube). You say that graphics arent everything but to older people like myself, graphics are everything. Think about it, when you buy a new computer it does the same thing but its a whole lot better than your pervious computer. I have two computers in my house, both of which can do the same things. The only difference is that my newer computer can operate things at a faster rate, and can hold more temporary/and permanent memory.
God this just sucks! I've been playing games for over 20yrs and I've got to hand it to this new generation of so called gamers, for snatching the fun and uniqueness right out of gaming. Now this (Wii) I think Nintendo's got the gamplay controller thing mastered. Did I mention 1st rumble? Lite-gun? Have Nintendo console graphics grown over time? Yeah, and they always bring control and gameplay along w/ it. While SOny and Microsoft seem to be very 1 dimensional companys. It's not like you'll be saying "I was fighting the final boss and it was so intense, but I couldn't see scrathes on his arm, or shadow wasn't there, or the tree in the back was swaying realistic enough". Why? He may be the same character but he always does something different each game. Resident Evil was going downhill even though the graphics were remastered on Gamecube and PS2, but the only one that saved the franchise was resident EVil4 because the gameplay and ideals were different, not just the visuals.

Game play isn't going nowhere but up, graphics is the same. Wii instead said “hey! graphics are non-essential anymore cause we say so! we created Mario damnit!” And then you have a gimmick controller with a lesser console.
I'll guarantee you'll get bored faster playing “fun” party games for 15 minutes than playing exciting adventure/action games for hours. And by the way, the Wii demographic is mainly for your kids. So grow up will ya?

Peripherals do well when experimenting with something new. eyetoy is a classic example. guitar hero is another. But making a whole new console off of last generation hardware and calling is a blessing in disguise? screw that! I'll play Resident Evil Wii when it's not a rail shooter.
Granted i hope the wii is a dismal failure. but it wont be, because they have support from some of the most talented teams in the world. But eventually, these team's publishers will only use the console as a cash in, and only then will Nintendo innovate using the hardware.

This is their favorite phrase "It's gameplay that matters not graphics" but when a game like Resident Evil 4 gets ported to the Playstation 2 with extra content and slightly downgraded graphics, that's when the phrase gets turned around. I can't tell you how many times i've read the same thing "the gamecube version has better graphics so it's better" So what the Playstation 2 is almost seven years old, it's a miracle that the game even runs on the hardware. The DS is outselling psp because of the games see, and the reason why they're so many games is because gameboy is the poster child of "handhelds"--that or it's hell of alot cheaper to makes games on--anyways, if you believe that psp wouldn't be a contender with some big big titles like final fantasy or dragon quest or heck RE then you must be out of your mind.
Point is, the games sell the system and what makes a game truely great to someone is the experience. If you play doom now, is it as shocking? no, but if you play doom 3 now then yes it would be. Is that because of the gameplay? hmmm? gameplay didn't change much but the experience did didn't it? So really, you're only looking at one side of the coin. Theoretically Your Wii will give you HALF the experience, however as blatant as I am as a sony fanboi, Nintendo’s console can still push above xbox graphics.
My real problem is with people who deem graphics as pointless. Just because Nintendo says visuals don’t mean much doesn’t mean they’re right. EVEN Nintendo knows that they’re taking a chance with softcore gamers. Like what’s the point of having brain age on a console? Wasn’t the whole point training on the go? By the way, Miyamoto even said it was a gamecube 2…in essence. Pretty much means same thing.

If developer believe in the Wii, and all the people who played it love it, so I say Nintendo's got something going. Making games prettier is not going to bring NEW poeple into gaming, it will at the most make them say ,"OOOhh thats pretty" and continue thier shopping.

Anyone who buys a console for other console ports is an idiot anyways. If you buy a console, its for its exclusives, which look A LOT better than ports.
Also we do know which games are currently being made. Check Wikipedia, theres currently 222 games being developpped for Wii and that doesn't count the secret projects some companies have.
I really don't see that much of a difference. I'd rather play the Wii version personally. Besides, I'm not buying either of the other two systems. Cost too much, and what do I get for the extra money? Prettier graphics? LOL - what a waste of money. The DS proved to the PSP that shiny graphics can't hide a crappy game. If graphics draws the player in, aka emmerses him inside the virtual world, then that is an enhancement to gameplay. Why? Because the player can relate better. Yeah, I am more of a 360 fan, but I think COD3 is showing what the Wii is capable of in graphics even before the Wii is released! In a sense, that's pretty good for developers to see the console's potential. Anyway, better graphics enhances the gameplay but more in a visual sense. It's not the top goal for gameplay, but it does count. And it helps better scores on reviews too :)
