Game Informer Talks Wii with Nintendo |

Matt Atwood, Nintendo of America Public Relations Manager, talked with Game Informer about the new name for Nintendo's next-gen console, the Nintendo Wii. Like Perrin Kaplan, he talks about how it sounds weird now, but it will become as used as Virgin and Yahoo. Of course, the fact that I still think Virgin is a flaky name isn't helping here... It seems they revealed the Nintendo Wii name now so that it sinks in by the press conference where we'll need the energy to focus on the new announcements. Basically, Atwood tries to tell us that Wii is perfect for the system because of all the things explained in the writeup that was revealed earlier today. However, why in the world does it have to be explained? A name should be all it needs. Other than that, all they had were "wii" jokes like this one...
GI: (laughs) The name Wii makes me think of peeing! You said you have to hold the DS like a book for Brain Age, I hate to know how IÂ’m supposed to hold the Wii controller.
Atwood: IÂ’m not going to go there, but you wonÂ’t be surprised. When you look at it, thereÂ’s so many different things you can do. But come to E3 and you will appreciate it.

Hmm...maybe it's because I'm an English Major, studied Spanish for four years and am learning Japanese that my brain can't drop down low enough to pick up asinine correlations like that on its own.

or is it the wii nes?

and correlating saying wii (as in wee) and saying wee isn't a tough one, even for someone as intelligent as you say you are.
a name is used to inspire a reaction, that's why companies spend a lot of time and money branding their products. if they just called themselves 'generic food product #98' they wouldn't sell.
so the reaction to this name as a stupid name which reminds people of weeing is perfectly valid, and the first thing normal people think about when they hear it.
oh, also, i don't know if you saw but i did qualify my assertion that it was pronouced 'why' by saying that was just the way i wanted to say it... why not take your head out of your arse ?

2) I'm not acting haughty and stuck up, I'm explaining why I probably didn't think that way. It's the same reason why I correct people's grammar, or find it hard to understand why people don't understand certain concepts. Trust me, if I wanted to gloat about something I would. Anyone can be an english major, Spanish is the most taught foreign language in school and many game/anime fans like Japanese. So those were all statements, not something to boast about.
3) Wii, wee, and wee wee are three different things. In the name announcement thread I listed many of the things that came to my mind when I saw Wii and the logo. Peeing wasn't one of the things that came to mind.
4) You're right about names inspiring reactions. Peeing wasn't one of my reactions, though.
5) 'Normal people' nowadays only know one language. If I know two and a half there's a lot more words to match with. Example: seeing 'ii' reminds me that "ii" means 'good' in Japanese. Most normal americans don't know much--if any--Japanese, so they would only think of american words.
Think of it this way. You say the word "Ken" to two people. One is a regular non-gamer. One loves videogames. The non-gamer will probably think of a person they know named Ken or the Ken doll from the Barbie line. However, most gamers will probably immediately think of Ken from Street Fighter. Why? They know about Ken dolls, but since there's Barbie-Ken and Street Fighter-Ken, being a gamer they'd probably get the game correlation first. Understand what I mean?
5) When I was writing my first post, only #1 had posted; you hadn't posted yet. You posted while I was writing my response to the first post and by the time I posted yours was up before mine. I was not talking to you when I said how it's pronounced. Sorry for the mix-up.

all consoles have had their l33t followers who stick with them through thick and thin, such as dreamcast, but in the end it's about how the public perceive the system.
i don't doubt nintendo's intentions, and i reckon they'll be quite agressive with their advertising (i don't remember seeing any ads for gamecube the system) and hopefullly they will be able to convey the message they need to, and convince the world to think of 'we' not 'wee'. yeah, honestly i know very little japanese, it extends about as far as the first 7 or 8 hours of 'learn conversational japanese' and it's safe to say i didn't exactly get into kanji... but i might be able to find a station or park.
i want a wii (ugh), and i want to see many good games come out for it, but i just feel like this name is a step backwards when they already had lots of consumer awareness about revolution and that codename 'revolution' really did tell you about the system.
i feel like i ought to apologise, i'm not usually so agressive in blogs, and you've shown me up by replying in a more than civil manner... soz!

However, even though I do understand where Nintendo is coming from, I do feel that Wii is a mistake and that Revolution was the best name for the console. But that does not mean that I feel that it will sell badly because of it.
It (Revolution) sounded cool, it looked great on advertisements. It looked really cool and told what the system was. Makes sense to gamers.
However, I guess Nintendo was worried about scaring off some older people and non-gamers. Nintendo is marketing this thing as something mostly everyone will like. Where as most core gamers might have preferred Revolution, older people, non-gamers and females might identify with Wii more.
Take the iPod for example. People of all ages use them. Stupid name, but everyone is used to it now and only realize how weird it sounds when you stop and think about the name. Which, if you stop and think about names of most things they sound weird.
Sure, there could have been cooler names for the iPod, but could you see a grandparent seeing "Teh_1337 J00kebo>

Its a sychological thing they got going, the name is a gimmick no doubt, but i wonder if their console will pay off.

This NOA marketing director is lying straight through his teeth. I realize that's his job, but it's pretty annoying when you catch someone doing that. Not to mention his claim that he had such a level-headed "Do I like it? Do I not?" first reaction to the name.
