Friend codes per Wii console, not per user

This little piece of evidence just might make or break the Wii console. A lot of people have been reacting saying that it's a bad thing, but some others think of it more as a salvation. While we're going to leave that to you guys to ponder on, here's the deal.

Apparently, when the higher-ups were talking about the Wii Channels, they touched upon the subject of friend codes. And it's now confirmed that it won't be a friend code (FC) per person, but rather, a friend code per Wii console. Here's what Tomoaki Kuroume has to say:
That's Kuroume doing the talking...

"If we allowed everyone to have their own account, you would need to enter a password to use the console. To switch on Wii and be presented with a screen asking for your user name and password...well for me, that would have been unacceptable."

It seems as if having an FC per person isn't what the Wii is about. But does that mean it stinks? Well, not really. Before you go on griping at how limiting this feature could possibly be, we're thinking that you'd still have the Mii Channel. That allows you to have various avatars in one console.

The Wii is all about sharing, anyway. And the Mii Channel is still there to send messages to other gamers and invite them over to play online. See? It's not as bad as you might think. Thanks, badam for the tip-off.

» So

It is still better than having one FC per game.

» Better than the DS....

.... but still a total load of crap. The only way this will be ANY good for serious online play is if dual friend code entry is not a prerequisite for play (as on the DS). I see this better for making "favorites" and "banned" lists. If I want to play with local players, I'll find them and play ad hoc. Otherwise, I want access to as many other online players as possible.

(and I want Phantasy Star Universe on the Wii.... but that doesn't seem likely)
