Forbes calls Rock Band a Guitar Hero knockoff |
Ó
In a recent piece on Activision's big boss Bobby Kotick, Forbes recently accused Electronic Arts' Rock Band (360, PS3) of being a "shameless knockoff" of Guitar Hero:
EA also teamed with MTV to sell Rock Band, a shameless knockoff of Guitar Hero that added drums, bass and a microphone to the world of make-believe rock stars. EA says it is returning to an "auteur model" of designing games, taking bigger chances on fewer ideas.
Shame on you, Forbes. You know how much the truth hurts. EA responded to the accusation with a very firm no comment statement. "Unfortunately we can't comment on this," said an EA rep. Speaking of knockoffs... don't you guys just love the drum and mic peripherals in Guitar Hero World Tour?

I still enjoy Rock Band more.
speaking of knockoffs doesnt guitar hero remind you a bit of guitarfreaks
Harmonix made Guitar Hero I and II. Then, they made Rock Band. How is that a knock-off? It's the same people making it. Is Coke Zero a knock-off of Coke?
Oh, and didn't Rock Band have the other instruments before Guitar Hero? Seems like Forbes has it the other-way around.
I can't believe they said that about RB. Rock Band has been better since it came out. Guitar Hero is the one copying.
gh4 is way better than rb1.5 its just an expansion with different songs
the friggin guitar. The Guitar Hero guitar buttons are so much more accessible and responsive imo. Anyone else feel this way?
As it was pointed Harmonix created both games, and Rock Band delivered a much more complete experience. Guitar hero 3 was incredibly bad, not that the songs were bad or anything, the game was simply badly done.
Being the first Neversoft has done it was normal, Now with GHWT they got it on track, the songs are good, the game offers a better experience than GH3.
Rock Band 2 is just a polished Rock band 1, but just on the same level as was GH2.
Rock Band 3 (whenever they want it out) will most likely bring new features. Thank god it's not this year. One a year is kinda cheap, I like how they offer you new songs each weeks.
GH is run in a cheaper and greedier way, just look at GH Metallica. Why do you think they have 28 Metallica songs in it? and then fill the rest with other's songs. I'm sure they have GH:Metallica 2 in head.
Rock Band has its share of cheap greediness too. With atrocities like AC DC Live. (much worse than anything GH ever done)
Get a bundle and then both games and play both.
You people who say RB2 is just an expansion, isnt that the same as saying GH2 and 3 are just expansions?
That would make GH:WT just GH2 since the others were just expansions?
I just dont understand what you expect to be added between games.. its not like you can add a new instrument every time, the only thing you can add to these games between versions is new songs.
And yes, GH is just a rip off of Guitar Freaks.
The only way to get AC DC on rockband was to create AC DC live, so you cant say thats a bad thing. The company selling ACDC's music rights were greedy and demanding more than just having dlc.
just what i was about to say,
Thank you for speaking the truth and pwning all GH-fanboys. This Forbes guy is a true idiot.
saying ghwt has more improvements than rb2 but yeah first 3 ghs were the same. you could also add a keyboard into the instruments which would be awesome but sorta useless
Guitar hero was made by harmonix and activition took over now guitar hero is a knock off of rock band becuase harmonix mad it and guitar hero stole the idea of drums and vocals
It's exactly right. Harmonix are the geniouses behind the modern rhythm game - guitar hero 1+2 before diving headstrong into rockband.
Rockband is the best of it's kind, love live RB.
I like to think of both of them as Bemani knock offs, Guitar Freaks and Drummania were Deffinately ahead of their time, AND TO THIS VERY DAY, they are ALOT more fun to play. I don't care about domestic mainstream music anyhow, Do you see any Instumental Jazz or Rock? not in RB or GH, thats for sure. I prefer something challenging. RB and GH allow you to be too sloppy IMO
Im glad you all knew about harmonix beginning the guitar hero thing, only to sell it and simply continue with rock band (it may have well been the real GH3) and brought new drums etc. They started it, and they are rockband, since the jump. Forbes, you fool.
The recomendation I've most read is, buy Rockband game and guitar hero instruments (if you own a 360 anyway). You can't do that if you have a PS3 :(
Not sure if you can do that on the wii.
Do it!
Do it now!
Seriously, the GH instruments are way better but RB is a better game all around.
stole everything then there are multiple singing games out there and drumming and guitar was done by konami (I think)
Nobody's original anymore. everyone takes ideas from others and competition insues which makes better products so does it matter who made what first? And anyway, drumming was started by Nintendo on the GameCube with that Donkey Kong bongo game, and who can forget Sega Dreamcast's Samba De Amigo with the packaged marraccas? As a guitar player, the GH games are more my style, the guitar feels so much better and natural to me, and personally RB's song selections aren't that great, a lot of those songs, seirously what is Harmonix on thinking people like that music? But each has their own good points and bad points so why complain if it gives us, the comsumers, more options to select from and more songs, even though both games contain a lot of the same songs. It doesn't matter who started it but who imrpoves upon the basic ideas. I still can't believe they haven't incorporated a keyboard into the instrument lists yet, though.
You're actually wrong, there, Milo. Konami made rythm games popular with DDR, and they have the Guitar and Drum game series that are popular in Japanese arcades.
However, Harmonix, who made FreQuency and Amplitude, were the first to really delve into rythm games, and the first to use Mainstream licensed music.
Harmonix was really the first to make a rythm game. It was called The Axe: Titans of Classic Rock on the PC. It was released in 1995, 2 years before Konami's first foray into rythm gaming, BeatMania, which was released in 1997.
The Axe:

So, yeah, really saying Harmonix ripped anything off when it comes to rythm games is just wrong.
Coke Zero is actually just Diet Coke with a different name. If you compare the ingredients and nutrition facts of the two, you'll find that they are EXACTLY the same...
This doesn't hold true with RB and GH, however lol.
