eye toy PS3 - Image 1The Wii Remote has been credited with the phenomenal success that the Nintendo Wii has had since its launch. With its innovative motion-sensing capabilities, casual gamers were drawn in and the market was expanded to what it is today. Hardcore fans and pundits may not fully understand what the deal is, but everyone concedes to the fact that the idea sells.

On the other hand, Sony finds itself trailing behind in sales even with the technical superiority of its PlayStation 3 game console. Loaded with a Cell processor and a Blu-ray drive, the PS3 is the state of the art machine in today's gaming scene. Sony, however, hopes to turn the tides with a price cut, a strong upcoming line-up of games and a new accessory called the PlayStation Eye.

The PlayStation Eye, in essence, is a digital camera attachable to the PS3. It can recognize visual patterns, as exhibited with the game Eye of Judgement, and can sense movements and distance in a 3D space. That, according to Sony, gives it more potential than a Wiimote.

"All of the different Eye-Toy games that we've made so far and the wide range [of gameplay] that we have delivered shows that the camera isn't the key device, it's what we do with it that's important," says Eye of Judgement director Kazuhiko Miyaki.

In the game, players use the PlayStation Eye with electronic cards to summon monsters. It never misses a beat as it can distinguish all 150 cards perfectly and can even tell how far they are and what their tilt angles are.

There's no doubt that the PlayStation Eye is a remarkable accessory that can spell big success for the games that take advantage of it. The only question now is whether or not developers will have the initiative to create games that will define its capabilities. Will we see a controller revolution where the PS3 and the Wii will fight fire with fire? For that, we'll have to wait and see.

» Wrong Name

It's called Playstation Eye.

by mreverdred01 - 2007-08-21 13:26
» uh. I'm not going to call you stupid, but.

It says eye-toy on the side. Just putting that out there.

by Nogatco - 2007-08-21 13:35
» Wishful thinking

Unfortunately it can't topple the WiiMote because it's not a standard therefore it won't get anywhere near the amount of implementation of aforementioned device. I still want one though.

by CSFFlame - 2007-08-21 13:38
» I hooked the wiimote up to my computer through bluetooth

coolest thing ever.

Oh this looks like a non-standardized expensive webcam.

by alexxb - 2007-08-21 13:56
» Still

If you wiki Playstation Eye they show you that, and besides why would they keep the same name on the last gen on a next-gen accessories????

» no

the eye-toy was just a fad the first time around, and it will be the same the 2nd time.

by jericho - 2007-08-21 15:21
» implementation...

use the camera for controlling normal games like fps or sports ..

by no - 2007-08-21 15:22
» no

Seeing as how the Wii is targeting casual gamers and costs only 250$ with an included and highly addictive game and the PS3 costs 499 - 599 and comes with no games (which you must procure for 60$) and this eye toy which costs what.. 60? Yeah, i'm sure the eye toy wont topple the wiimote.. no matter what.

by Kawlinz - 2007-08-21 15:30
» Oh weird..

It says Eye Toy right on it. Just like the other person said. Maybe they should've taken that off if they didn't want people confusing it.

by Sam - 2007-08-21 15:55
» Its going to be G A Y

This will probably G A Y because after a little while they will stop making games for it like the PS2 eye toy

» Well...

Some haters out there say that people look stupid playing with the Wii-mote. Well, people would look even "stupider" when theyre up moving around trying to dance or do whatever crap the Eye Toy does. How would they do FPS shooters with that eye toy. Holding your hand in a gun position like a little dork??? haha

by Billy-Sama - 2007-08-21 17:27
» Wow

When Nintendo does something "innovative", you people love it. Funny how people will bash Sony when they do the same.

I've played wii-sports. It did about the same as the games for the original eye toy did for me. Not much. Hell, the old eye toy did more of what Nintendo promises with the wii than the wii does. Would I like to play? Not really.

On a different note, it'll be neat to see how you'll be able to implement the eyetoy with home and the chat dohickeys. I'd love to be able to pick up and move my furniture or go bowling using my hands. Almost worth the $60 for a card-battle game.

» What promise did nintendo make?

"Hell, the old eye toy did more of what Nintendo promises with the wii than the wii does"

As far as I can see the wiimote does exactly what Nintendo promised it would do. Obviously you haven't played Metroid for the wii, because it controls better than any FPS I've ever played.

» so

If it recognisies cards, it cant be that far away from recognising tennis rackets, cricket bats for playing tennis or cricket games.

The fact that the Eye Toy isn't a standard drops this idea before the thing is even out of the gate. Developers wont waste even more money developing a game for the PS3 just to have the OPTION of using the Eye Toy in some superfluous way. Sony should stick to their own field of expertise and thats giving us a little something for everyone and a sh1tload of RPG's not play copy cat all the damn time.

by whoelse - 2007-08-21 21:18
» all

All playstation 3's should come with this. Then developers will more want to take advantage of it and it will make the PS3 more valuable.

» 56

Wow.. PS3's sell around here for 600 bucks with 2 games and 2 controlers...

And what was this highly addictive game for the wii again ? Nothing I can come up with on that console that doesnt boreme after 6 days

by FarStrider - 2007-08-22 02:41
» Another crappy copy

Can't wait for this. Anyone got a release date yet?

» Potential

I think it Sony were to market this correctly (perhaps offer it in a decently priced bundle with the PS3) then it would encourage developers to use it.

Also, it would be nice if Sony updated there firmware to add an additional "mode", so instead of using remote with the XMB, you can "interact" with you music and video content, etc.

I know that it's something they are thinking of doing because they came up with this video (I know it's not real time - but at least it's a thought)...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PzvcsLIQg0

There was also a game that used the camera and a microphone which looked promising but I can't remember what it was called. The game appeared to use your video image in the game as well as using some kind of voice recognition.

by Alien18 - 2007-08-22 02:58
» Thats the game...

The other game I was thinking about was this one.

But it seems no one has heard of it since E3 2005 so it might be in "Development Hell". That's a shame.

» Kinda unrelated...

I’ve been reading QJ for a while and I just needed to vent on something somewhere. I jus have one question: have any of these writers ever taken a journalism class? They consistently fail to write in the correct order news articles should be written in. I had to once again read through two paragraphs of BS until it got to the actual point of the article. The titles are usually misleading and they try to add too many jokes or little side comments in parentheses. Just tell the news in a short, succinct and accurate article. That’s how journalistic writing should be unless, of course, its a feature piece. I’m not trying to be a prick but it’s honestly really annoying because it happens with almost every article. Just look at the article about Denis Dyak's predictions posted at 9pm 8/21 if you don’t know what I’m talking about. Again, two paragraphs of BS till they get to what the title is about.

This has some pretty limited applications and would only make the PS3 cost more.

I think it will have some very interesting uses though. If they make a dance revoulution game for the PS3, that would be cool to use this.

by TheMetroid - 2007-08-22 16:29
» well, since there is too much to reply to, i'll just say this....:

Agreed to and with everyone and everthing that sided AGAINST this.

by Kazart - 2007-08-22 17:46
» antigrav

Antigrav for eyetoy was really fun. It was cool because it wasn't just your picture pasted on the screen, the virtual character copied your moves. If they make more games like that, It would be awesome.

» meh...

Usually when someone comes out with something innovative it means that its new and useful (not always). The wii mote is innovative. I cant get tired of playing the wii and i've had it since the wii came out. Now sony wants to come out with something "innovative" as well so what do they come up with? a camera... that they already had for the ps2... but since its for the ps3 they are calling it a new thing. Unfortunately its just going to be a fad. Hopefully not but im sure of it. The theory behind it sounds cool but how are you going to implement that technology into games? Sounds fun but its surely going to fail... like it did before.
