Nintendo's Fire Emblem franchise could be heading into a whole new direction starting with the next game in the series. According to IGN, Nintendo and developer Intelligent Systems recently hinted to Dengeki Wii & DS Style that online components may appear in the next Fire Emblem game.

Nintendo producer Hitoshi Yamagami reportedly told the magazine that his team was "originally considering Wi-Fi compatibility" for the recent Wii title Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn. Development towards an online feature for map and unit downloads was undertaken, but balance and technology difficulties kept it out of Goddess of Dawn.

"This would be the first FE for the Wii, so we decided to focus on single player and held back on Wi-Fi," said Yamagami. "However, for the next title, if we have the chance, we'd like to use it."

With Fire Emblem: Goddess of Dawn just recently released in Japan, pretty much everything about the next game in the series is pure speculation, but the thought of having Wi-fi battles in a series that made a name for itself as one of the best single-player strategy games around sure sounds interesting.
