Final Fantasy XIII Already in the Works

Yoshitaka Amano, one of the character designers who works on Final Fantasy games, was interviewed by Japan Vibes recently. The French magazine's interview revealed something interesting. Fortunately, French is Canada's second language so I actually understand what they're saying! Here is the translation of one of the juicy parts:

JV: A word about your other projects at the moment?
YA: I took part recently in the animated film, The Planet of the Winds which has not yet screened. Other than that, I am currently working on Final Fantasy XIII and I have many other projects.

As you can see, that confirms that FFXIII is already underway. Unfortunately, Amano did not mention the console the game's aimed at or even mentioned what in particular he's in charge of. It would have been interesting to know if he's only working on the logo or if they're into the character design stages already. Although chances are that it'll be a PlayStation 3 exclusive, Square-Enix is slowly turning into a multiplatform company - so who knows?

it may almost be devastating to sony if it wasn't ps3 exclusive, but i would bet my xbox 360 that it will be ps3 exclusive.

Final Fantasy XIII has been in the works for quite a while. There were news stories a while back about FFXII getting a significant setback and the possibility of seeing XIII release before XII.

Thats what happens with different creative leads and different teams working on the projects at the same time.

Of course FFXIII will be a Sony exclusive. You can bet anything that Sony will NOT let this franchise leave there camp. They would prety much outpay anyone just to keep it. FFXI ended up on the Xbox 360, but thats an MMORPG & a very old one at that. If they did lose it, yeah, they would take a pretty good hit in sales & whatever other system got it, the Nintendo Revolution or the Xbox 360, both would see a huge Jump in System sales just for this one game. Im Sure MS paid a pretty good amount to SE to get FFXI (God knows why they wanted that POS of a game) & the upcoming title in the works, but Im sure they wll not pull the heavy hitter games like the Single player FF series of titles, the Grandias, Chrono series of games, etc. Pretty much no standout title.

i swear to god if FFXII is as crappy as FFX, FFX2, FFXI then im going to abandon the series in a whole. the whole merger with Enix has gotten them to provide these crap linear games that just are interactive movies with battles you can play.

*sigh* its probably going to be a PS3 exclusive, ill give you that, i but not for too long. FFXIV will probably start veering into multiconsole teritorry, but thats 6+ years down the road.

IT WILL BE PS3 EXCLUSIVE FOR SURE!!! Also Dragon quest and CRono franchise will be exclusive to PS3. The games that will be made for xbox 360 are mostly non rpg and new titles from square.

Thorlord, you cant claim that Square has *only* started to produce linear games since the merger with Enix.

The whole of the Final Fantasy series, plus many other of their titles (Chrono Trigger, DragonQuest etc) are "interactive movies with battles you can play.", the gameplay is minimal in these games.

I do agree though that since the merger the quality of what they're meant to be at has gone down (story, characters etc).

how dare you besmirch the holy, most reverend, names of square-enix and/or final fantasy!! i am basically going to buy the console ff13 is on, so it's actually not a big deal to me which one it's on.

i hope this means we don't hvae to wait about 5 years for ff13, cos i skipped ff11 and am getting quite itchy to play another. mind you i found ffx and ffx-2 to be very enjoyable and quite excellent games. you say they're linear, but i disagree, the plotlines may lead you through the game very nicely, but when you get to the part where you're fighting dark aeons and things you find it somewhat challenging and a lot more spicy.

hooray for final fantasy! i want more and soon!

what was actually good about ffx-2 was it's battle system, so your attack was a little misleading there(stilll a bad game though) FFX was actually a pretty good game, there first forray onto the ps2, then there's 11, i'm playing 11 right now on the 360, it's a very in depth game.

FFXII in my opinion is sporting some very interesting innovations for the rpg genre, so if the other games weren't your bread and butter you may like ffXII.

hironobu sakaguchi (with his mistwalker company), along with nobuo uematsu and akira toriyama are working on several xbox 360 rpgs... do you think they could put the final fantasy series(sakaguch i's squaresoft creation) to an end?... lol this will be interesting... i wonder why sakaguchi wanted to make xbox 360 games anyway... hmm....

P.S. i am not biased towards any console

Sakaguchi made Xbox 360 games because he was very close friends with the man who was president of Xbox Japan until just recently. Also, Microsoft funded a lot of Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey.

# FFX-2 linear?Guest 2006-04-25 23:48
FFX-2 isn't that linear at all. when you get to choose where to start your mission, you have the possibillity to start somewhere other than a hot-spot!!

I heard that FF-13 was going to come out just a couple months after 12 in Japan and considering 12 is already out expect some info about it at E3 and it may come out by this winter in Japan for PS2 and if not then it will come out with the PS3 as a launch title.
